To my mind, yes, but it's also a lot poppier than some of their previous albums. I don't really have the authority to comment: It's my girlfriend who's the real Xiu Xiu fan.

Tokyo Jihen - Sports -- Huey Lewis watch out. Following TJ/Shiina Ringo albums finally pays off with something nearly as good as Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana.

I don't usually like Xiu Xiu much, but I'll give this one a try since MX7 is on board with it. And that Rob recommendation sounds very interesting.

Square King has caused me to revisit Volta do Mar and Ghosts and Vodka. And evey year I revisit Arab on Radar - Yahweh or the Highway. Definitely an all-time favorite. And Exile on Main St. still has me thinking about how rock is a branch of folk music. This album too has to be on my top 25 albums right now.

Igorrr - Poisson Soluble

If I could make music it would be exactly like this. Including elements of death metal, breakcore, IDM, world music, jazz and trip-hop. Hell, even Bach makes an appearance. :D

The dude is from Whourkr - an brutal experimental grind/electronic act and is currently my favourite thing in music.

I never cared for Tokyo Jihen over her solo stuff but this makes me want to check the album out. Thanks!

Will have to check this out, cheers :D . Been meaning to listen to more Shiina Ringo. Can't work out if I like her or not :?

To be honest, I really hated Xiu Xiu for years. I bought a few albums, but it wasn't noisy enough, and the lyrics and voice just plain annoyed me. Just not my kind of 'thing' at all. For some reason, over the last month or so, something happened to make me adore them. Today I've listened to Xiu Xiu 55 times, according to last.fm. So I'd definitely recommend coming back to them every so often to see if anything has suddenly changed :D

Two days into South by Southwest and I already feel my body giving out. Here's why (bands I've seen):

TV Ghost
The Fresh and Onlys
Cruddy
Woven Bones
Awesome Color
The Spits
Fucked Up
Clinging to the Trees of a Forest Fire
Howl
GAGAKIRISE (!)
Book of Black Earth
Zoroaster
Priestess
The Lords of Altamont
Acid Mothers Temple & the Melting Paraiso UFO
The Lords of Altamont (again)
River City Tanlines
Cheap Time
The Blind Shake
Wizzard Sleeve
Bass Drum of Death
Terrible Twos
Birthday Suits
The Greg Ashley Band (eh...)
River City Tanlines (again)
Brimstone Howl
The Spits (again, and completely on fire)

On topic:

Dexter Gordon - Go
Sofa Surfers - Cargo
Charlie Parker - Talkin' Bird
Sonny Rollins - Volume 2
Boats - cassette tape

And now to wade back into the fray...

Anyone ever listen to (or know anything about) Manic Shooter? I saw something posted about them on a music site that I frequent... I was forced to wonder if they were 'shmupers' or if it was just a coincidence.

xiu xiu - dear god, I hate myself (MX7 is right again. This is a winner. I think they do better with this somewhat more pop sound-- just going on my vague memory of their earlier stuff. The worst tracks on this are a bit too reminiscent of Kate Bush cliches.)

les savy fav - let's stay friends (Stumbled on this again when I was looking for the xiu xiu. Once again I'd say that going for a somewhat more pop sound really made this band better.)

terry riley - shri camel (Best thing I've heard in years and years.)

the new tortoise is just as solid as it seemed at first. Good album.

Agreed, MX7. Jockel, after you've worn out your Power CD, go buy Oi Oi Oi. I could honestly do without half of Power. Here is my track rating for it:

1.) nice
2.) nice
3.) nice
4.) ok
5.) ok
6.) is this practice time?
7.) is this practice time?
8.) is this practice time?
9.) ok
10.) is this practice time?
11.) is this practice time?
12.) nice

I saw Boys Noize in CA a few months ago. I was so pumped for it I was kinda let down. It was not an epic show, but what I did really enjoy about it was that it was very "live." He was truly DJing up there, almost constantly prepping the next piece to splice in and I really felt like I got to see somebody "perform" not just some poser playing pre-made material that he fine tuned before getting on stage to dance around like fool.

A few others I've come to love since discovering Boys Noize:

Modeselektor
Siriusmo
SebastiAn
Danger

Righteous Super Hero / Righteous Love

All 3 Gorillaz albums, though the 1st 2 are better in my opinion, apart from a few select tracks on the 3rd.

I think this latest Xiu Xiu isn't nearly as pop crossovery as the last one (Women as Lovers) although the first track is really good. The girl vocalist on that album isn't in the band anymore I read; she added some much needed variety to the vocals. Eh, I'm hardly ever in the mood for this kind of stuff anyways though. If I want morose noise pop I'll listen to Magnetic Fields or something. I went to a Xiu Xiu show here and This Song's a Mess and So Am I came on before them and the guy went fucking ballistic; I loved it but some other assholes heckled him and Xiu Xiu's singer yelled back at them to STFU. Anyways I don't know if that affected this, but when Xiu Xiu went on they played one of the quietest sets I've ever been to. The crowd was just talking to each other and I could barely hear the music over them. It was fucking weird.

Their previous release Go Forth was pretty pop oriented (as opposed to their first two albums anyway.) You should check it out if you haven't already. The Rome EP is good stuff as well.

Will do! I've only heard a few albums, and this latest one is the first one I've listened to carefully.

I think I owe thanks to CMoon for these recommendations. I think he also likes shri camel best, but this is going on a memory from about a year ago.
