A friend of mine was telling about he and another friend (a girl) went to comiket on "the wrong day". It was all man on man manga, written by and aimed for women. Winner was Luigi fucks Mario in the ass manga... so wrong. You know it would totally be Mario dominating. No way he's a bottom.

@Gaijinpunch: Interesting insight. Especially your suggestions that nerd culture has reached such a point that macho posturing is now pointless, and people can now live through various technologies and narratives instead. The logical conclusion of escapism? William Gibson seems more and more prescient with each passing day...

RE Dirty Pair Flash: I watched the opening theme on YouTube and vowed never to bother. For a program with so much emphasis on iconography, to alter it so drastically is blasphemous.

Ashita No Joe's animation is incredible (i mean actually the temporal animation) the way he kinda continues through with his hooking punches and stuff, you really 'feel' each punch, also love how so much of it pretty much looks like 'animated manga' like Blazing Transfer Student :D

was discussing with my friend the 'sparkle eye= bad guy' thing in classic anime, and he was saying he remembered it from 80 Days Around The World which was a massive cartoon when I was a kid, I loved it. Sure enough when I checked it out, it was by Nippon Animation ;) - I now realise they were also responsible for Dogtanian and Picolino - both awesomez :D

Yeah, most of it is just my take on living here for many years. I'm jaded though, so take everything I say with a grain of salt. ;) You can google around though. Plenty of people VERY detached from reality.

it's mad when you think that so much of the cyberpunk era anime were 'warning' of this and questioning identity etc. once we all went online.

With Japan's population dispersal in question, I wonder what 80's era anime is a good warning. Akira maybe? Despite the ailing economy, Japanese have a high standard of living, which makes it hard to imagine where they get the ideas for a lot of these shows. Oh, yeah -- western pop culture.

did some of Dirty Pair/Crusher Joe's team work on it? The intro stylings in general and a lot of the characters faces really look like the Lovely Angels.

It never ceases to amazing me that despite being the richest country in the world at the time, there was so much resoundingly bleak and transgressive Japanese pop culture during the 80s. Think of the ero-guro stylings of Togawa Jun, the revolting excess of straight to video sickies like Guinea Pig and Death Women, the poppy nihilism of Violence Jack and Urotsukidoji. Given that popular culture can often be a mirror on societal values at large, t's almost as if the producers and consumers of this output just couldn't wait for the economic bubble to burst.

The music is great, but the intro music in the TV series is WAY better than 'Go Crazy Baby' IMO

Yeah, there seems to be an alternative cover with the characters from the show, but I got this one which is even cooler. Wouldn't be able to get away with doing that on a record sleeve these days...

It doesn't even have to be so extreme. Some of these shows where high school kids live alone (wut?), the lack of sex (save the demon gang rape), and gang members in public high schools.

isn't that a really old thing though? I'm pretty sure yer man 'Boss' or whatever it is in Mazinger Z manga is supposed to be some sortof leader of 'all Japan's gangs' or something, though it doesn't seem to really mention in (what I've seen) of the anime.

just watched second Ashita No Joe episode - very much liked it indeed, script is brilliant and the lack of music for much of it just makes it fell more intense and real or something. Pure ace stuff.

I'm getting in to anime a little bit more now so I thought I'd attempt to join the conversation. I've seen most classics like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Cowboy Bepop and really liked those. Since that went well, I've also seen some random stuff on Adult Swim like Paranoia Agent and Inuyasha. Also watched the recent Golgo series via Netflix which I thought was great as well.

Recently though I've been had a hankering for grittier, traditional animation from the 80's, so I started wish-listing a bunch of stuff on Amazon that I hope to eventually all purchase.

First one up was Space Adventure Cobra and I finished it last night. Never heard of it, but watched a clip on youtube and liked it so I put it in the list. Definitely enjoyed it! While it did get a little slow around the 3/4 mark where it started dumping lots of background story, most of the time it was fast paced, changing from strange scene to each new odd thing. Loved the way it sort of just plows through any odd thing not giving you enough time to consider if it makes *exact* sense. Also really liked that it was mostly set in 'usual sci-fi' but with a bit of mystical elements in regarding the main 3 female characters.

Good 80s classics?

Tank Police and New Dominion Tank Police

The Dagger of Kamui - with music so good that Godfrey Ho used it for his ninja classic, NINJA DRAGON

Would Mad Bull 34 be considered a classic? Maybe!

Anime with Mark Twain? Maybe.
Anime with Mark Twain speaking Japanese? Fuck yeah!

Other 80's
Five Star Stories is apparently dope. Never watched it. I always liked Angel's Egg. Robot Carnival is great.

Five Star Stories was a strange OAV that didn't even begin - or try - to cover the convoluted story in the manga. Both, the anime and the manga, have awersome mecha and chara designs. Urushihara Satoshi worked on this, so it should look damn good. I still have a VHS bootleg of the anime and a few volumes of the Nagano Mamoru manga. They actually survived the mass animu purges I made in the late 90s after watching Evangina - that's how much I enjoy watching them.

The theme song for The Five Star Stories is kinda catchy, as well 8)

Five Star Stories is alright, only gives you a taste and then leaves you with a tone of questions and WTF is going on moments, really need to read the manga, same deal as Battle Angel Alita.

Plenty of watchable 80’s stuff, try: Armored Trooper Votoms, Megazone 23, Gall Force, Area 88, Neo Tokyo, Venus Wars, Crusher Joe, Riding Bean, Gunbuster, Bubblegum Crisis, Appleseed, Patlabor, City Hunter, Wings of Honneamise, Twilight Q.

Gah... so... much.. to watch....
Thanks for all the different recommendations.
I had a few those already in my mega list but will be adding more.

Tank Police looks pretty great! The team reminded me of a kooky ghost in the shell, but I guess it this came earlier. The Dominion intro was pretty snazzy.
Daggar looks excellent too, added.

I checked out Five Star and it wasn't my first style I was into, but I did really enjoy the Lupin Cagliostro movie (surprised me, but I found after watching that the heritage with Miyazaki is there). So I may enjoy Five Star as well, it looks well done if slightly different than what I usually go for.
I've seen Angel's Egg mentioned before but couldn't find a reasonable DVD. Granted, didn't search hard yet--was keeping it simple on Amazon since I've got plenty stacked up. May look for it in the future though, thanks.

Time to crash.. tonight's feature (or mini-feature I guess with the length) for me will be Biohunter! G'night!

Both shows came from the same mind of Shirow Masamune, so its understandable you can see some similarities. He also penned Black Magic M-66 and Appleseed.

You'll only find Japanese versions of the DVD (without subs) my friend. Granted dialogue is sparse but what's there carries a lot of weight. Better to torrent it first and grab the disc if you want it for your collection or whatever.

Thinking of stuff I'd REALLY recommend from that decade... Urusei Yatsura and Laputa come to mind; also, I liked what little Galaxy Express 999 I saw (though I think what I saw was actually from late seventies). Other stuff had either badly drawn men (Kimagure Orange Road), badly drawn women (don't wanna hurt anyone's feelings, thus I won't elaborate) or some other cooties of the sort about it (enough said about Zeta Gundam). I can't really think of the eighties as a particulary good decade for anime. There's rather embarrassing time between Galaxy Express 999 and Mamono Hunter Youko.
Funny thing is, while I have a soft spot for pop culture of the eighties, I'm pretty sure anime I watched at the time was made in the seventies.

I really dig Biohunter. If you like it, also check out Demon City Shinjuku, which just got a nice re-release from Discotek. Lot's of awesome stuff recommended thus far; I won't add anything else so you don't get overwhelmed. ;)

Everyone needs to watch Kimagure Orange Road and Zillion for totally awersome late 80s Pop anime. Also, everyone needs to watch Maison Ikkoku 8)
