Selfies
I saw this extremely depressing series of selfies that were taken AT A FUNERAL! I mean really. "lol, g-ma just died, totally at her funeral, omg!" I never want a cellphone. I don't want to be labeled as a part of this depressing group.

Oh yeah, fuck selfies.

Having a cellphone is useful, but I could probably get rid of it with nearly no impact to my life [it's more like a small email checker, and I wouldn't ever check my mail if I didn't have it].Lord Satori wrote:I never want a cellphone. I don't want to be labeled as a part of this depressing group.

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I only have a cellphone for making calls, which is extremely rare. Heh. I can play Splatterhouse on it though! Speaking of which, soon after I hit the top of the leaderboard, some idiots came by and added fake scores :/ I'm not sure Namco separated scores from different versions, either.
Anyway, the new Firefox has some good stuff, and they've changed the "highlight all" and "match case" options from small checkboxes to toggle buttons. Good. But they've moved those options to the other side of the bar now - WHY? That destroys any speed gains the new interface might have had.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Spent Halloween watching videos of indie horror let's plays, usually of Markiplier because he was the first such guy I discovered and I cared more about the games than who was playing them.
Too many games with a "find X amount of objects oh and there's something trying to kill you" premise.
Too many games that rely on jumpscares and lame attempts to fuck with the player's head.
And I think I will start caring who the player is, because Markiplier had a lot of game playing habits that annoyed the fuck out of me. Like taking a quick one-second glance somewhere and deciding there was nothing there and moving on. In at least two games I saw this got him stuck until he finally stopped playing like a six-year-old and started approaching problems intelligently, while most of the time it caused him to miss details until he was looking directly at them. Does this guy have no peripheral vision or something?
I kind of want to play Cry of Fear now, but I'm not sure what the system requirements are. Will it run on just any PC that Half-Life 1 runs on, or do I need a fancy modern PC because of new graphics or whatever? (No joke, I have seen at least one mod where the mods' system requirements were different from the actual game's)

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Cry of Fear doesn't require especially amazing system requirements - it's a Half-Life mod with some fancy new engine stuff, but I think it's built off the Paranoia engine. You should try it out. I don't know if they've fixed any bugs since I last played it, but they were patching pretty regularly for a while. Really difficult stuff, though; I eventually saw reason and started spawning weapons for the higher difficulties.

Wait... the what engine? Here I thought it was based off the Half-Life 1 engine...Ed Oscuro wrote:Cry of Fear doesn't require especially amazing system requirements - it's a Half-Life mod with some fancy new engine stuff, but I think it's built off the Paranoia engine.
EDIT: One thing I forgot to mention. I'm going to be playing on Mazinkaiser*, of course, so any mod that requires an online connection or me to use a Steam-enabled version of Half-Life is right out the window. those would require me to play on my laptop, and I'd rather not game on a fucking laptop. It's just too awkward and uncomfortable. Like doing a ghetto tate.
* Meaning my custom-built Win98 PC for older games, not the giant robot.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
I'm fuzzy on the technical details after a few years. They've got a front end program that essentially runs Half-Life in a wrapper, I think, with some hooks into a new DLL for new effects. Don't quote me on that, though. They also used some techniques that other Half-Life engine games don't use, which were mainly not implemented before due to the crude nature of the existing Half-Life tools. A good example is in the new camera movement for cutscenes - if memory serves the paths were modeled in another program and just imported from there. It looks much better than what you'd get just using Hammer (or, goodness forbid, Worldcraft).
But yeah the end result is Half-Life + new hotness (some new effects, a lot more detail than OG Half-Life engine is capable of). Think of it as Half-Life engine + stuff.
Saying "it is the HL engine" or "it isn't the HL engine" doesn't really capture the facts of it. It's a bit like asking if using an anti-aliasing injector or a frontend launcher changes the engine.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
It runs on the goldsrc. But It uses the same opengl32.dll file found in the half life mod called paranoia which allows extra graphical effects iirc.
You also get vac banned if you try to play half life multiplayer after installing the mod (paranoia) too (unless you have the mod installed without the dll). Seeing as cry of fear is now standalone, it wouldn't have this problem.

I thought that rumor was never substantiated. Also, isn't Steam smart enough to put everything in its own folder now, so there's no more cross-pollution of games and mods? That wasn't the case back in the day when you had mod directories of course.AntiFritz wrote:You also get vac banned if you try to play half life multiplayer after installing the mod (paranoia) too

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Looks like I have to skip it regardless... I found a spot to download the mod version (not the stand-alone) Cry of Fear, and... it was 1.62 gigabytes.
Mazinkaiser only has a standard CD-RW drive, not a DVD-ROM drive, and Windows 98 sucks with USB devices, so there's effectively no way I can port a file that size over to it.
and if the mod requires Steam or any sort of online connection, it was already a no-go. Guess I'll just have to watch Markiplier be a fucktard some more.

It just occured to me "You know what game would be awesome with horror-themed mods? Rainbow Six!"
So I went to see if any existed... and apparently, either I'm looking in the wrong place, or there aren't much of any mods at all (and I'm not limiting my search to just the first game, either).
Talk about missed potential.

Again, people who disguise their pets as help animals with a fake (I know the type of tag and vest a genuine assistance animal wears here in the state.) vest with red crosses to be able to bring them into stores or buses. Look, folks. You're not fooling anyone that your Siberian Husky mix is there to help you, when the dog is the one needing constant guidance and doesn't even know how to lay down on command.
Don't hold grudges. GET EVEN.

Videos of games where the sound and music have been overwritten with a different (likely shitty) song.
Lets plays where the player won't stfu.

When comments are disabled on a YouTube video. Does nothing else but make it really inconvenient, especially if it's a run of a good game and you've got a question about the run. If comments are disabled, you can't post and hope someone answers, the best you can do is PM the video's creator and hope he responds.

Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
That annoying sorta depressing feeling you get when you finish a really awesome anime and are left wondering what you could possibly watch to replace it. Especially if you watch it in its entirety in one night, like I did. Kaiba is so amazing I just couldn't help it
Dubs that suddenly stop before the actual anime ends.
Speaking of dubs, people that think subs are better. The only reason you think that is because you can't understand the voice acting and rely on the subtitles and are thus oblivious to any voice acting related problems.
On an unrelated note, it pisses me off that I'm the class of 2010, and I'm still doing absolutely NOTHING! My sister is a junior in highschool and I still have yet to go to college! Though I'm finally going to apply to a local college, it pisses me off that it took this fucking long!

Part of why I have a distaste for smartphones in general despite being part of the problem myself; I need it for work and team projects, but instant messaging that trivializes communication annoys me.

For me, Dubs fall into one of the following:rancor wrote:Seriously?Lord Satori wrote: Speaking of dubs, people that think subs are better. * So bad it's horrible
* Acceptable
* Somehow works better than the Japanese version (e.g. The Big-O)
* CAMP (e.g. Space Knight Tekkaman, a.k.a. SPACE LANCE)
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
You surely realize that a hefty chunk of people in the off topic are diehard anime fans, right? Or are you seriously just that ignorant?Lord Satori wrote:Speaking of dubs, people that think subs are better. The only reason you think that is because you can't understand the voice acting and rely on the subtitles and are thus oblivious to any voice acting related problems.
"can't understand the voice acting?"
What does that even mean in the first place?
"rely on subtitles"
In a language you don't understand, yes, that is relying on subtitles, I suppose.
"oblivious to any voice acting related problems"
Again, what does that even mean?
Let's break this down a bit for the mentally deficient: While I know I don't "understand the voice acting," many characters are written with particular actors/actresses in mind, be it TV, movies, and believe it or not, animation. When someone is chosen to voice a character, they become that character, the original vision. When you take that away and replace that character with some amateurish white goober, the vision is no longer as intended. Take Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star, for instance. Replace Akira Kamiya with some white dude with no power in his voice and change the lines; it's a completely different show, one that was known for the longest time in the U.S. as a silly comedy, and about 70 episodes shy of the original series.
Look at Battle of the Planets, Starblazers, Sailor Moon, etc. Dubbing not only destroys how the character was originally intended, but often the dialogue is completely re-written, edited, or just omitted. Again, this is something called ignorance, because a lot of fools don't realize these things. Are these the "voice acting problems" you speak of?
You might go ahead and sign up for college; it seems like you certainly need it.

Someone needs to tell the millions of stupid people over here that prefer the subbed hollywood movies to dubbed that they're doing it wrong.
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
What if I like both for varying reasons, even if it's mostly for hilarity?
Re: Little things that annoy the hell out of you
Thats fine. My personal taste is dubbed tokusatsu films. To suggest that one is better than the other, and that I am superior to you because I prefer... is just asinine.
