I saw Altered States a few days ago. Great movie, but I'd have hoped for more DMT-tripping.

Rika, The Mixed-Blood Girl: AWESOME Pinky violence series that really gets no love. Really fast paced, jumpy direction with lots of delinquent girl fights, sex and groovy visuals. The saga of Rika, half Caucasian, half Japanese and her journey through girl gangs, slave trade and revenge. I loved this movie!

Toy Story 3 : Watched it again. Surprisingly good effort; much better than the second, yet not quite as the first. Spanish Buzz is kinda stupid, as are a few of the musical plugs, but the film still delivers with some really clever mechanics and imaginative humor. I love toys.

Crawlspace (2012) - 7/10

Low budget but surprisingly decent Australian sci-fi horror flick. A bit of confusing storyboarding as the film closes but it worked out in the end. Obviously constrained by the budget but the lead actress did a good job near the end.

Was that the title of the UK version?

I actually bought The Road on BluRay naked a while back, as it didn't get wide release here... if a release at all for that matter. I had read the book, and enjoyed it. I like Viggo as well. I quite enjoyed it when I watched it then, but the first thing I said was, "I may never watch this again". It's really hard to stomach, although the book was more gruesome (and of course, slower so you have time to dwell on the mentally disturbing images). This was still no cakewalk.

The woman hadn't seen it yet and of all my BRs, it was only that or Cloverfield. I warned her it wasn't the easiest thing to watch. I think about 15 minutes into it she had started gasping.

Please, read the book of this one. I enjoyed the movie of 'The Road', but at first I was insulted they were even trying to make it as a movie. The movie is good, but not at all to the level of the novel.

The Road is a really good, gripping novel, and gets right to my heebie-jeebies, as does all mentions of cannibalism.

But it is a very sparse book, Biblical in prose, and my coworker who read and saw it said "I can't believe they made the ending even more depressing than the book's."

Read the book (first), as per my post above. I thought they did a fine job of adapting it, but then again, this is about the 2nd or 3rd time in my life I've actually read the book. So, what the hell do I know?
"I can't believe they made the ending even more depressing than the book's."
While the tone may have been off, didn't it end in a similar fashion? A decent amount of time passed between reading and viewing, so, I can't say for sure.

I think they did a good job of portraying the insanity the world went into. The cannibals seemed like normal people. But, in the first 10 minutes of the movie we see the man telling his son how to kill himself w/ a handgun. WTF?! Then like halfway through he's got the gun up to his kids head. Crazy shit.

The scene in the basement of the house and the the cannibal camp ground were brutal in the book though, and part of me is thankful they didn't take it too far in the movie.

For me, being a father made the book and film even more harrowing. You ask yourself a lot of questions -- even more than usual. E.g. taking "am I a good parent?" to almost inconceivable levels.

Also a father... and, felt the same things... for both the book and the film. It definitely reaches out to men more than women for that reason, I feel, which is rare among emotional films.

Darkman - 8/10

This film HAS aged, but if you look past that it's still a prime example of comic book style action and storytelling, and the character was always one of my favourite antiheros. I don't think I've actually seen the sequels so I'll put them on the to-watch list. The funny thing is Liam Neeson seems to overract almost comically when he *isn't* being darkman.

The only thing that made it worthwhile for me were the effects. These same effects were used for the A-Ha's "Take On Me" music video, esp. the scene in the hallway. You should check both out to see what I'm referrin' to. Otherwise, I tend to avoid any and all William Hurt movies.

Just finished Virtua Girl and it was everything I hoped it would be.

The effects were total cheeeez, but the music was strangely reminiscent of one GunBuster song! Hahaha! At least, that's how it sounded to me. Charlie Curtis was/is very talented. I hope to see more of her in other features 8)

The Kids Are All Right

The story of two middle aged lesbians whose teenage children seek out and meet their sperm donner father. Obviously complications ensure. No idea how I came across this one, but it was quite good. Not hippie "feel good" bullshit like Juno, but a genuine story with ups, downs and some thoughts to take away on life and family. Partially because the script was well written, but also due to the strength of the cast, with Annette Bening and Julianne Moore playing the lesbians and Mark Ruffalo as the sperm donner. That said I think I've seen enough of Ruffalo's ass to last a lifetime.

Suay Laak Sai or Sick Nurses

Got lent this movie by a friend and all I can say is, meh. The story is pretty weak, the acting is terrible, but some of the kills are creative, or at least a little disturbing, and the use of colour is nice. Not something I feel I would watch again, though it has made me want to dive back into Argento's works for some reason.

War in Space - Absolutely awesome Toho sci-fi space adventure! Gorgeous sets, lots of explosions and fast paced action! One of my new favorites.

Rolling Thunder - More Paul Schrader written revenge. Fairly depressing, yet loaded with bathos and a pretty uneventful middle of the film with a forced love interest. Still, a good revenge movie, although the climax just doesn't feel satisfactory.

Entrails of a Beautiful Woman - Sequel to the smash hit Entrails of a Beautiful Woman. Essentially just really misogynistic soft-core mixed with Yakuza for about 50 minutes, then the giant fleshy monster with a sentient penis/vagina combo comes into play and murders everyone for revenge. Worth the long wait. Something for everyone! Even necrophilia!

Yep, Altered States is quite a trippy movie indeed. Even the AS movie trailer draws you in to check it out.

I saw the DVD version of AS in the bargin DVD bin and bought it on a whim...am glad I did.

That World War Z trailer looks quite to be interesting with it's upcoming June 2013 release date stateside. With the zombie pandemic reaching in the billions worldwide, it's something not to be taken lightly in that type of senario indeed. This upcoming film shows the pandemic that takes place 10 years earlier and the main character (Brad Pitt) wants to interview the survivors of that ghastly event.

Just saw Life of Pi in 3D having never read the book or looking into the plot at all. If you are interested in seeing the film, the 3D here is used to great effect and I felt genuinely enhanced the film--especially in the moods it was trying to achieve. Story wise I enjoyed the film, but being 2012 I actually wasn't expecting a twist at the end. I could deal with the boy and the tiger surviving on the boat, but the island sequence started to make me suspect something was awry. I have to remember when this book came out and it was a time when twist endings and everything being symbolic for everything else was all the rage. If you have grown as annoyed with that gimmick as I have, you might also feel some disappointment in the direction the story goes in the last quarter of the film.

The film's bent is a transcendental/spiritual/philosophical one--very light on the philosophy and much more of the other two. I can see how the book MIGHT have bounced back and forth between the modern, secular world represented by his dad and Pi's spiritual beliefs and how the two stories might have become a stage for a battle over perception, but I wasn't quite sure if that's where the director was trying to go at the end of the film or just wanted us to feel good. Regardless, a lot of the things in this film work really well, and as long as you aren't to quick to say X equals Y and come up with your own opinions, I think the story is pretty enjoyable.

Ironclad - 7/10

Not sure why this has such negative reviews, I loved it - good old fashioned swords and killing. The fighting has a raw feel to it, partially because of an occasionally annoying shaky close-up camera, but also because they've been quite loose with the choreography making it look like an unrestrained brawl.

The Third Man

According to the British Film institue this is the greatest film that country has produced. While I'm not sure i would give it that designation, The Third Man was a very enjoyable film. A solid film noir with great intrigue and a winding plot. Excellent acting on the part of Trevor Howard whose Major Calloway was probably my favourite character. My idea of a quintessential British officer, post WWII. The rest of the cast is also quite good, including Joseph Cotton and Orson Wells.

The only problem i have with the film is its attempts to use "expressionist" camera angles. While these off-kilter shots do work well in some scenes, a lot of them felt more distracting than engaging. This is especially true for the first half of the film, but they seem to be better used as the film approaches its finale. Excellent use of light and shadow, especially during the film's climactic sewer chase. Just beautiful cinematography during those scenes.

i need to watch 3rd man again. It is great, but I think it is maybe not quite a masterpiece (as I recall it anyway.) What is certain is that it would have been a better film if they'd let Welles behind the camera.

Red Psalm

The juxtaposition of hungarian folk music and marches is dreamlike and poetic, and the movie is filled with adorable long takes. It's definitely a complex film, for those that enjoy being confused.

Blind Beast

Nonsensical, unbelievable characters aside, it was really grasping at straws by the end. Maybe I just don't "get it". Only positive thing I can say is that the setting was neat. Avoid.

Onibaba

Classic Jidaigeki that I had somehow not watched before. It's great all around, but perhaps a bit too extended for its own good.

Did anybody else see Lincoln?

Amazing to see a film with that slow a pace pull the audience together like that. Neat film; very by the book in many places, but not always. There's a few neat surprises. Love the scene where Stanton goes ballistic at "another Lincoln story!" and proceeds to miss the best one of the movie.
