Basara busts into song whenever shit's gonna go down and he thrashes the enemy with his Guitar Hero mecha controller. Seriously, how fuckin' cool is that?! Silent drummer chick was a bit annoying, but I got used to that quirk.

Anyway, I tried watching a bit of Bakamonogatari and I couldn't last more than 10 minutes of that steaming pile of shit; that drek belongs in the "why modern animu sucks" thred - pages and pages should be devoted on how soulless the whole thing is and how it takes away people's will to live after watching it. I had to cleanse my visual pallate with some moar episodes of The Slayers 8)

watched first episode of Yuusha Raideen with my son - he was loving it, I thought it was pretty ace too, loved the proto-Ideon (and therefore Eva) 'awakening buried beasts' feel to it, also the Gundam-ish chin on Raideen and his colourings :).

Read Gundam - Blue Destiny manga, didn't really understand wtf was going on, but apparently you're supposed to read 'Efreet' or something first :s - anywayz it didn't seem that great anyway and I was just kinda kludging through it without taking anything in...

I read the (so far 4) scanlated Gundam - Developers manga - now them I really liked, can't wait till they're all done (hopefully).

The Doujin artist Yoko's new series "Molester Man" is tops. Don't forget to check out his other series Onani Master Kurosawa.

Finished Turn A Gundam. I liked it a whole bunch, but sometimes the character parts felt a bit abbreviated and there were a few uninteresting miniplots. Now to never watch any Gundam ever again!

Any recs for some fun, top-of-the-pile escapist animu (a bit of seriousness/drama is cool)? Assume I've never seen ... anything. I am a total rookie when it comes to this stuff, so you needn't get too obscure.

Anything involving schoolgirls and vampires sounds like a special kind of poison. Is it a Seinen? Unless sarcasm, nutshell why you think I'd like it?

You blinking idiot CHI

You just wasted one of the best Manga ever by watching the obscenely shitty anime adaptation. Sinful.

Also, excuse to post Samura art.

Avoid Bakemonogatari. Your hunch is correct.

And indeed, Blade of the Immortal anime is an abortion. Everyone should read the manga instead, which is a masterpiece. It just ended, sadly. I wonder what will Samura do next.

Have Dark Horse released the last of the GN's? I stopped buying after the end of the last story arc (Manji is in the underground prison) and decided to let the final arc be completely translated before getting the last books so I could read them together. Nearly 15 years buying Blade and it can be a bit long in the tooth waiting for the next instalments, so I read the whole thing through again recently to get back up to speed.

From what I've seen at their site the last volume they published is 25 (out of 30). You can find scanlations up to v.29 (30 is still raw) if you don't want to wait for that long (Dark Horse's volume 26 is scheduled for June 13, 2013... it will be a good while before they publish it all).

Jeez, so dark horse are spreading the last arc over 8 novels total. Must be a biggie. Been buying Blade from the day it first leaped off the shelf and told me it was made for me, so I'll stick with the old ink and paper to see it out, but thanks for the recommend. ;)

Fair enough. I don't have that kind of discipline so I've already seen the raws even though I don't understand what they say at all, haha. Thankfully the Spanish publisher I buy it from (EDT/Glénat) will release the last volume soon.

If you have an issue with vampires and schoolgirls, read the Zaregoto series instead. Every NisiOisiN work is a must read (with the exception of Medaka Box, which is crap).

Reading Osamu Tezuka's Apollo no Uta and Hitoshi Iwaaki's Historie:

I still can't believe Tezuka made this kind of stories.

This thing is getting better and more violent with every page.

Apollo's Song is excellent. One of my favorite mangas. Fairly depressing stuff, much like most of his Seinen work. Thankfully not as artsy and experimental as some of his other adult works.

Black Lagoon is finally coming out of hiatus in January 19 2013. It was a long wait. Hiroe also just released a Black Lagoon doujin for C83, featuring the characters as actors in a backstage.

Would you mind seeing embarrissingly-yuri stuff? I'd say Strawberry Panic is a bit escapist and borrows heavily from other classics, such as Oniisama E... ("Dear Brother...") and "Maria Watches Over Us," except is way more light-hearted and the designs are a lot softer since it's a newer series. The whole school setting filled with only females and the total abscence of adults reminded me of the film Innocence, as well. The first half of the show is slow and the writing is really flawed for a series that's only 24 episodes (i.e., there are way too many characters and side stories), but I felt compelled to keep watching for the main story arc. It's one of the few raer instances of new stuff that I ended up liking 8)

awesome, but this still reminds me of how the Black Lagoon OVA, Roberta's Blood Trail has yet to be localized and dubbed... The Black Lagoon dub is one of my favorite dubs in modern anime.

Skykid, if you want manime, I assume you've seen the canon of the ultra-manly shows of the 80s-90s? Like your Mad Bull 34s, Dominion Tank Police/New Dominion Tank Polices, Angel Cops, and so on?

Also, shows like Dirty Pair and Bubblegum Crisis count as manime even though the shows center around women. That's just the way it works.

Seen all that shit and everything else in the vicinity. If Japan hadn't run out of balls, I wouldn't be running out of manime, such is the sorry state of things. :(

Ha ha ha, that's a good way to put it.

You can always try watching some of the ultra camp of the 70s.

Seems like the new "big thing" coming up is an anime ripoff of Waterworld written by the guy who did the Puella Madoka Magica whatever series. I hope it still contains as much piss-drinking as the original Costner

watched first episode of Round Vernier Vifam, really liked it though I'm not totally into the art, it's got that kinda thing where it's kinda halfway between the ultra glossy Zeta/BC type shading highlights, and the flat 70's style, so my eyes never know which to get used to :p

Just watched the las episode of Jormungand. It's so uncommon to see a good adaptation, without filler episodes, good music, decent animation and a proper end. I enjoyed this from beginning to end. I can't wait to watch White Fox studio's next production.

What was your favourite Manga and Anime Series of the year?

AOTY: still Daily Lives of Highschool Boys, though JJBA comes VERY close. Still chuckling to myself whenever I think of a particular skit from that show and it's almost been a year since I finished.
MOTY: Assassination Classroom unless we're allowed to count still running ones, in which case Dorohedoro.

AOTY: I still need to watch EVA3.0, Gothicmade and Nekomonogatari was released yesterday. Right now I'm sticking with Jormungand.
MOTY: Oyasumi Punpun.

I am halfway through Season 1, and while I find the character design abhorrent, I am enjoying it a lot, the mecha design is nice, and the constant OTT epicness I do like...

I've just gotten through 6 episodes of Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu. So far, I like it in spite of the heavy use of shitty CG for cars and backgrounds. The story and settings are way over-the-top in the same fashion as, say, Project A-Ko. That was the first thing that came to mind. The chara designs are decent and pretty much stand on their own; I mean, they're not cookie-cutter moeblobs and there is a surprising lack of fan service, which is refreshing to see (even though they did have the obligatory beach excursion episode). I'd cautiously recommend it, but only after watching Project A-Ko 8)
