Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I've updated MAME to 0.172 and now effects (for example my scanlines.png file) don't work anymore.
I'm on Mac OS, using SDLMAME.
Effects worked without issues on 0.171
I've already tried using a new, clean mame.ini.
Yes, I know, BGFX blah blah blah. Tried it out, after half hour of tinkering with it not only I didn't like the results, but when I quit MAME and started again I discovered it doesn't save my BGFX settings.
So, yeah, I enjoy my scanlines.png, it worked great so far, I want it back.
Thank you very much.
EDIT: just noticed that it says in the terminal "Unable to load effect PNG file '/Applications/mame/scanlines.png' "
Go figure what's the matter.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I'm from the US and am working on a computer to CRT TV 15khz set up while being new to it.
I was gonna get and connect VGA to UMSA to Scart to one of those Scart to Component transcoders on amazon and ebay then component to tv.
Also I have a 3.5 to white and red AV cord that I should be able to use for audio through the TV.
So the question was: I saw a VGA to Scart cord with a Molex connector on Ebay from a Spanish seller named Arcadian8bits. And I think one from another seller too.
I just wanted to make 100 percent sure...Even if these cables come from Europe will they work fine with NTSC/American TV's, or in specifically in my case, through the Transcoder then into the TV?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/141663388712?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
I already know for sure the UMSA works with NTSC TV's because of those who have done it. But if this cable would work just as fine for me, I may get that instead of the UMSA since I think it maybe slightly cheaper.

Works perfectly fine with me. I'm using them with the new integer scaling feature and it's dope.donluca wrote:I've updated MAME to 0.172 and now effects (for example my scanlines.png file) don't work anymore.

Im using Win 64 build but there's no difference in that area, leave the PNG in the artwork folder, just write what PNG you're using in mame.ini (do not write the full path, just 'scanlines.png')
Dunno in your case but some people have reported a few things not to work because of a new folders and files structure 'n shit.
Anyway I went from a 100% clean install (not just copying over files) and no issues...

Those were the issues. Don't ask me why, but before I had the scanlines.png file in the mame root folder and the full path in mame.ini and that worked fine.Xyga wrote:Works perfectly fine with me. I'm using them with the new integer scaling feature and it's dope.

Now I've moved it into the artwork folder and just put the file name and it works. Thanks for the help!

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I went through this decision a while back and decided on the non CMVS / AES route. The CMVS has a unibios so you can switch regions and open up home features like training mode etc (mvs cartridges are not region locked btw) but imho its not worth the cash when you can buy an MVS mobo (many models of which can accept the unibios with no soldering), supergun and controllers for FAR less cash. The CMVS is not compatable with AES cartridges and you would need seriously deep pockets to go that route, keep and eye here http://www.arcade-projects.com/forums/ as Darksoft is developing an MVS multicart that will be compatible with the majority of games.atheistgod1999 wrote:Good point. Also, if you get a supergun you have the flexability to play any jamma compatible pcb, RGB's HAS supergun in the sales form is a very nice device.......

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
When's the retro game price bubble going to burst? ~7 years ago, I looked up the price for Mega Man 1 NES, and thought $20 was expensive. Today, I checked the price again, only to find it's >$80 in good condition. I've decided to go back to my Everdrive N8 for now, but it doesn't feel "right", and I'll have to buy the actual cartridges of many SNES games due to the current SNES Everdrives not supporting Super-FX.
Actually, will it eventually burst? I want to buy the actual carts and manuals (already print and read scans of them before playing the games) and put them in BitBoxes or something when the prices go down.

You assume it's a bubble. The price is set by the supply and the demand. The supply never grows (and reproductions and emulation and virtual consoles has never impacted the value), and I don't see why the demand would decrease...
Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
The only situation I can imagine where the prices are going down is a serious financial crisis or war. I mean situations where people need food more than they need games.

I see people predict it will pop when people get over physical media in general, and as much as I wish it were true, I doubt it will happen. As more and more people look for alternatives, for example importing games from Japan, their market is steadily rising in price as well.
I blame Youtubers and Hot Topic.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
is my NAC psu on the fritz/do I have anything to worry about?
a week ago I threw battle garegga into my cab. I couldn't get a clean read on the voltage tho - it was clocking in around 4.7 and I couldn't increase the voltage up to 5. yesterday I threw futari in and got a clean 5.01 read. chalked the BG issue on possibly not being 100% on the jamma edge contacts when I was trying to get a read.
after playing for a few hours I tried to turn the cab off via the psu power switch, and it wouldn't turn off.... so I resorted to using the NAC master power switch. I can flip the psu switch but it doesn't do anything.
is this the behavior of a psu on the fritz? it's the original psu (afaik) that came with the cab. do I have anything to worry about if I want to keep using the cab without changing the psu and just using the master switch? I'm assuming if the psu goes bad it won't take my board with it? I don't want to put in too much effort just yet, but I also don't want to be neglectful to the point that I jeopardize one of my boards.
It might just be time to swap some parts.

Where can I buy replacement PS1 jewel cases? Are there any double-disc replacements?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
PS1 jewel cases are identical to regular clear CD jewel cases. For multi disc cases like Final Fantasy, the top and bottom of the case are identical to the bottom/rear tray of any regular jewel case. This is also true for fat case single-disc games like Alundra, but if you're replacing the top shell, you'll of course want to pop out the piece that has the "Playstation" logo on it, to insert into the replacement tray.atheistgod1999 wrote:Where can I buy replacement PS1 jewel cases? Calling DVDO iScan HD owners. Is there any discernible difference in processing lag when changing the output resolution from 480p to 1080p for example? And are there any other settings that could affect lag?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I recently bought a softmodded Wii that came with a pre-formatted external USB drive in order to play wii .iso files. I've had not problem loading up and playing Wii .iso games perfectly, but I can't see any Gamecube games that I place on the drive. When I connect the USB drive to my computer, it won't allow me to explore it- it prompts me that I need to format it first. I've so far ignored this prompt (hit cancel), and used WBFS Manager to load up Wii .iso games, but no dice with the Gamecube games.
Can anyone assist me in the process of how to get Gamecube games to play off of an external USB drive with the Wii, ideally with my existing drive that I'm using already successfully using with Wii games?

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
So... I was playing around with my out-of-the-mill 2010 desktop PC's resolutions settings for my second screen, wich happens to be the NEC XM37 Plus, and I managed to access a few new resolutions I never saw as an option before :
when doing things in a certain order, I now get access to lower resolutions, the lowest being 320x240 and 320x200.
naturally I tried these mode. They did work, the NEC re-synced and the raster was of 320x240 and 320x200 pixel counts(fired up Nestopia and set it to 1x screen size, so that's how I know the raster was 240p tall. My desktop background was also twice as zoomed-in, as in the 640x480 mode). But what's weird is that the pixel structure was that of 480 vertical lines, with no scanlines. So I guess that what my PC does, is displaying the right number of actual digital pixels, but using a 31kHz video output signal? Or is the PC internally upscaling these low resolutions to 640x480?
Can someone care to explain this one to me?

Did you double-check that it's not refreshing at 120Hz? I was able to force 320x240 @ 120Hz on my Trinitron PC monitor and it looked really weird.

No, there's a drop down menu for refresh rates and i chose 60Hzbobrocks95 wrote:Did you double-check that it's not refreshing at 120Hz? I was able to force 320x240 @ 120Hz on my Trinitron PC monitor and it looked really weird.
EDIT : forget what I just wrote. In those modes, the drop down menu for refresh rates is blank. So I don't know at what refresh rate it is running.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
I am also planning on on connecting my PC to my CRT tv through component and I recently started a thread about it, http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=56905. You shouldn't need to get the UMSA or Scart transcoder. All you should need is a vga to component transcoder and the CRT Emudriver software. My plan is to just use CRT emudriver 2.0 beta with my AMD radeon 7750 video card to allow my card to output the low resolutions required to play retro games in their native resolution and then just send that signal through the VGA to component transcoder to my CRT. This video card only has DVI output but I am just going to use a DVI to VGA adapter, which are very cheap.vrada501 wrote:I'm from the US and am working on a computer to CRT TV 15khz set up while being new to it.

CRT Emudriver is only compatible with certain video cards and their is a compatibility list on the CRT Emudriver download pages. However, there are still quite a few cards that are compatible and if you don't already have a compatible card you could easily buy a cheap used one off ebay from the compatibility list.
I plan on using this VGA to component transcoder, https://www.audioauthority.com/product_details/9A60.
You can download CRT Emudriver 2.0 Beta here, http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/v ... php?id=295. This version has better compatibility with newer video cards.
You can download CRT Emudriver 1.4b here, http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/v ... .php?id=65. Use this if you have trouble with 2.0 beta.

Re: Questions that do not deserve a thread
Brad, not sure if I posted in that thread, but slightly more adventurous types with some of the fairly newer cards that use the AtomBIOS can use a modified variant called Atom15BIOS found in the BYOAC's GroovyMame forum. Not the easiest to flash from what I heard, but read it can apparently allow booting of BIOS in 15KHz. Something to keep in mind, since even when transcoded over component the BIOS/POST screens would still be in 31KHz.
