What software do you use to record your runs? I've been messing with various codecs in Virtualdub but everything I try makes the videos turn out way more garbage than I thought. Youtube fucked up the quality of my upload so much that it's a horrible, blurry mess in fullscreen, but when I was watching it in VLC it looked fine before I uploaded it.

I've used lots of different software, Virtualdub included. It's definitely a solid piece of software, so if it looks like crap coming out of Virtualdub there's probably something silly that's not set right somewhere. If I knew your video pipeline and the encode settings I might be able to diagnose the possible cause.

If it's only the Youtube that looks bad, it's probably what I described here. Try upscaling the video (eg. 320x240 -> 640x480) before you upload it.

Odd - I didn't have any quality issues with my other hori MAME recordings, but then they're games with a lot less going on on-screen... I'll have to look up how to upscale it first in Virtualdub. I'm basically recording runs in MAME as .INP, then recording the .INP to a raw AVI after (if I record a raw AVI while playing an actual run it lags), then using virtualdub to compress it to a size that isn't 20GB (!)...

I swear I will break 40 mil with Tateha eventually.

Trying to reupload with standard settings and then again with it upscaled 2x to see if the low resolution is really what's causing Youtube to decide to eat the vid quality.

Try:
Video -> Filters -> Add -> Resize -> 200%

And for best results do this using the MAME AVI as the source if it wasn't obvious, because your processed file already lost the colour data.

AVI, MP4... Believe it or not these are just container formats. So saying you used AVI is about as useful as saying you mailed it to Youtube on a USB stick. You will have chosen at some point the codecs for the video and audio streams contained in the AVI. ie. Video -> Compression -> (your selection)

All sorts of stuff can affect Youtube... But another side effect of 2x resolution is that Youtube gets better data to base their re-encode off of. I'm guessing it'll work out.

Let me know once it's done, I'm curious now if my blind tech support proves useful.

Seriously though, you're gettin' good. Was that after I left that night? I think I remember that St5 score because you were complaining it beat your clear. That 32 mil I think was on that shitclear of the night where I died in st2, st3 and a ton of times late to the point where I went into the final phase with no lives and half a bomb left, while you kept clearing the game with tons of extra lives in stock. You're waaaay more consistent at survival than I am.
