^ This is me on the guitar. I think this is my first ever solo. Or at least the first one that sounds even marginally cool.

Enjoy!

I probably won't get around to mixing this soon, so here's my latest. It's a demo song I did for my synthesizer, so there are no other sounds but Digits VST in the mix.

That part towards the end was actually pretty cool. Anyways, I've made a few new songs. Here's a couple of them.

Made this for another 2 hour compo. The theme was vacation or something. A couple little bits should get fixed, but I can't be bothered. Was going to make something not-chip, but I needed a good set of not-chip samples.

Looking for some advice or comments.

I haven't made music in a long time. No real talent; just another pedal, knob twiddling, experimental music dude, though well before that I used to know how to read sheet music and played a french horn.

Mid-life crisis now; I'd like to learn how to play the keyboard at some reasonable level, but am half anticipating getting bored with the whole thing and don't want to dump a ton of cash into it. At the same time I don't want to throw money away buying something cheap that will need upgrading if I get more serious. Was immediately thinking of using Reaper as a DAW + USB keyboard controller (like the Akai MPK49) just to get me in the fucking door and see where my head is at.

I know that's enough for learning (and all the DAW stuff is completely new to me--back when I recorded it was all analog 4 tracks, stacks of effects banks, etc.) but wondered if you guys had any recommendations. Maybe saw a flaw in my reasoning or could recommend a better DAW controller.

If you want to learn traditional keyboarding, make sure it's not just a 49-key or smaller-- you'll need a good amount of room to practice most pieces. BTW I'd avoid M-Audio because their action isn't that good and it wears out.

There's probably some good MIDI-based piano teaching software out there. If you have a Mac, GarageBand might even have that built-in (I haven't looked but I thought I saw something to that effect).

The route I took was I learned piano just to play my own music. So if you're already doing knob-twiddling, you could start sequencing accompaniment to your tunes too, and putting some chord progressions in there. My approach has always been very casual and undisciplined, but the positive side of that is that you're not putting too much pressure on yourself if you learn by noodling around.

But it really all depends on what you want to learn. If you're composing, some theory is definitely good to know too.

Well, picked up the akai mpk 49 anyway (mostly on the price point.) I have 30 days to return it...I guess it I love it I might consider upgrading to the one that's nearly full sized--but it's $800 and at that point maybe I should look into actually buying a synthesizer. I'm looking at this is an entry point though. The mpk I have seems pretty damn flexible, and if I can learn basic chords, etc., that's at least a start before dropping shit-tons of cash. And later down the road I may have a better idea of what I want. Just trying to learn reaper now and downloading gigs of free vsts.

Not so much new music, but I created a soundcloud to dump a bunch of stuff I made and never did anything with. Hoping to do some new stuff but haven't had the time to piece together some new equipment. I know there are a couple people here who dig noise (Merzbow et al) so give it a listen if you are so inclined.

I too have a soundcloud. It has musics of all types, though I tend to err towards chiptunes and FM synth.

Right now I'm working on the soundtrack to an indie shmup, and I've got eight minutes of music thus far - it's about a little less than half the soundtrack. Charging $25 per minute of music, because this is my first real paid project.

I'm big into FM synthesis, so if you like old 80s-sounding arcadey tunes (and I think you do) you might like my stuff.

Top Gun/AfterBurner-esque track

More new-wavey house-ish track

Mellow track that I foolishy feel suitable for a final-boss type dealy-o

Me trying to be more film-score Brad Fiedel/John Carpenter esque

cool stuffs man Imma check now - man while I like some of the sounds of FM, Jesus it's one headwreck to try to 'understand' :p - well I mean the DX-7 is anyway...

John Carpenter often liked to rock an Ensoniq SQ-80 apparently, one of the best free VSTs out there (IMO) is an emulation of it:

http://www.scoreforsale.com/html/sq8l.html

I see you use FL Studio - IMO a v underrated DAW

Man, thanks for posting that! I always love free VSTs for my DAW. Especially when they are synths.

FM is hard to work with - the few instruments I've managed to make sound pretty ugly; that's why I stick to sort of "how-to quick guides" of FM and free presets lying around. Why reinvent the kick-drum every single time?

yeh no worries - I think I used the pads from that on one of my early tracks, it definitely instantly had that Carpenter sound :)

when I spoke of FM I suppose I specifically meant the DX-7 and its variants which is pretty much the hardware FM synth, there's the Roland 'digital' synth from the same era, but its a completely different sound technology.

haha well for a kick, though I do spend AGES EQing, compressing and distorting them each time, for me is always the 909 - I use the Golbaby Tape 909 pack, I do put a 'click kick' on top also, depending on the rest of the track, but underneath, well it's pretty much always a 909 ;)

here's a link to a zip file of 16-bit, 44,100hz MONO WAVs of recordings of my 707:

http://www.fileden.com/files/2009/2/14/ ... 07Hits.rar

kick is useless, but those RS, CB, TOMS and HH will cut through anything ;)

and here's a link to recordings of my mBase01 (kick generator) -

Did this for BotB's Winter Chip 8. It's not my highest ranked entry in the compo [#114th out of 215 entries], but it's my favorite.

Yeah, it's a SNES song. Stole samples from FF6. The .SPC is available for download. So is my original .XM source [used SNESMOD to convert].

For sure!! I'm chomping at the bit waiting for him to release the info/process to patch/load your own loop. If you still have a DMG and a cart, grab the rom and have a play. It's badass, and the beat mashing/stuttering works really well and is quite controllable once you get the feel for it. And the fact that it sends out an LSDj clock signal for syncing, the possibilities are vast. Did I mention you can speed up/slowdown the loop realtime, and it still stays in sync with LSDj? Cuz it does!!!

Sounds incredible! Haven't been able to dump a ROM for ages cus I don't have a computer with an old enough printer port, but might see if it runs well in an emulator/on a GBA cart via Goomba.

I just finished this one. It's jazz fusion based on an old Adlib tune I did maybe about 10 years ago. I revamped it with more of a real-band groove and with trickier changes, and the new touches were kind of inspired by Shinji Hosoe and Yasuhisa Watanabe stuff as well as 70s Jan Hammer.

Two months late, but I concur. Really fucking awesome stuff.

I tried making some 80s-esque tunes as a soundtrack for my short film project, TOTAL NINJA CARNAGE. Inspired by the mad genius of Godfrey Ho, who had this tendency to pick the most awesome bands of the time for his film scores, like a-ha, Clan of Xymox, and Aleph.

The Bar Reunion - this could possibly be one of the most generic songs you'll ever hear. It's great!

Harry's Death - a sad scene is given the pathos only warm analogue strings and a DX7 Electric Piano can provide.

Showdown and Bloodbath Beach - The final showdown - at DAWN! The sun rises on a new age for the district and the ninja empire.
