Heh. The girlfriend also picked this one out on our movie night and I liked it as well, much better than I expected.jonny5 wrote:+1 for the other guys....that whole lion vs. tuna thing was hilarious....xris wrote:I went and saw The Other Guys with Mark Wahlberg and Will Farrel. Actually, I rather liked this, I went and saw it 'cause a friend wanted to see it. It ended up being really funny, actually it was fucking hilarious! It was a little long at two hours, but the jokes were spot on, the running gags were good, and the combo of the two main actors played off of each other really well. The caper that they were investigating was okay, nothing special, but it was appropriate fro the movie. This was probably the funniest movie I've seen this year, but it has been one of the worst years ever for new movies.
Also watched Cujo on tv. Slow moving through the first half, but the end is alright. I would have to admit to being scared of a big ass rabid dog myself.![]()
one of the few times i let my g/f pick the movie and wasnt massively disappointed

Speaking of 80's cop movies, I watched Red Heat yesterday. This has all the great staples of 80's action. Ludicrously loud, cannon like handgun effects, the Soviet Union (complete with an Austrian playing a Russian), drug trafficking and over the top gore.
Feedback will set you free.

Not a movie, but been watching Red Dwarf on Netflix. OK, it isn't consistantly brilliant or anything, but now and then it is really, really, outlandishly funny in a way few few films ever manage.

I've been torn between The Killer and Hard Boiled as my fave Woo flick, but Hard Boiled has that bad ass villain with the eye patch + baby putting out fires with pee so it's a winner.

It's not a horrible film compared to say, Jennifer (lol) but it's definetly not in line with the first two. As far as the way the movie feels it's nothing like the originals. Really sucks because otherwise you'd have a very respectable trilogy.

Was browsing at my local Costco store yesterday, October 29th, and saw that they had the Alien Quad set on Blu-Ray for a mere $89.99 USD. Picked it up in a flash (considering that it's $10.00 cheaper than on Amazon and $20.00 cheaper than at Target). No need to wait for it to come in the mail either & pay S&H fees are both a plus.dcharlie wrote:i was all pumped for Alien Quad on bluray this weekend but i got the "delayed shipping" email from Amazon :/

Re: Movies you've just watched
Finally checked out this new Saw 3D flick on Saturday, October 30th 2010, and it continues exactly where Saw Part VI ends. The digital 3D effects are truly eye-popping and give the Saw fans a run for their hard-earned money. I did get my $10.50 ticket admission worth out of it indeed.
Apparently, the very last remaining Jigsaw follower, Detective Hoffman, is out doing his dirty work placing unsuspecting victims in Jigsaw's mechanical traps. There are some scenes from various past Saw films that have been given the digital 3D upgraded treatment, cool props for pulling that off successfully. It truly is "Game Over" for the Saw film franchise.
I do recall that a new Saw flick would appear around the Halloween season every year but the folks that churn out the Saw film franchise have said that Saw 3D would be the final one indeed. What new tricks and demented traps does Jigsaw have up his sleeves this time around?

Just watched Jackie's Little Big Soldier, which was pretty good but not awesome.
Watched Dead Man's Shoes on a recommendation from NeoEmpire. It was well worth it.
Saw Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps which wasn't bad despite 'slim-shoulders LaBeouf'.
Watched TRON again for the first time since 1982.
Also watched 'The Making of TRON'.
It was the first time a film had been filmed in that way, and the last. Filmed in 6 to 25 layers
. More than 500 people were involved in the post-production work, including 200 inker and hand-painters in Taiwan. It was mostly film, not computer graphics. 4 Seconds of Light Cycle movement required 600 numbers to be hand-input by programmers. They really achieved stunning effects against the odds.
Next: To watch the new TRON.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Tron is a fusion of artistic vision and mathematical genius. What the casual viewer may not appreciate is that there was no way to preview the CG sequences during production. Rendering co-ordinates were calculated and input manually, and the team wouldn't know if the shot would turn out as intended until the full render came through. It would be a feat akin to painting the Cistine Chapel ceiling while blindfolded.DEL wrote:Watched TRON again for the first time since 1982.

I rewatched Candyman and The Ring on Halloween. I still hold to Candyman being the greatest horror movie of the 90s, due to its return to the long absent idea of the monster as a twisted seducer and corrupter rather than just a straightforward murderer. I prefer the US remake of The Ring over the original due to its far superior cinematography and direction of photography. I'm still waiting for blu-rays of both of these

Re: Movies you've just watched
I'm not going to pretend that Ringu (or whatever) is high art, but seriously all the cliches of American cinema drive me crazy, especially the complete misunderstanding of cinematography. It's all in the eyes of the beholder, but I remember hating the US version because it looked just like every other US film (and once you know all the shots, you can read the film and there's no horror.) Maybe this is an extreme view, but I don't feel like there are many directors in the US who actually understand good camera work. Maybe the Cohen brothers, but I wouldn't say they are doing amazing camera work. Children of Men has amazing camera work, as does (surprisingly) 28 Days Later, but then again, these aren't Hollywood directors. I mentioned earlier in this thread the amazing Walkabout where the camera is almost like another character. That understanding of camerwork as art feels utterly absent from Hollywood and actually destroyed the US version of Ring for me.Daigohji wrote:I prefer the US remake of The Ring over the original due to its far superior cinematography and direction of photography.
Daigohji, this isn't directed at you, it's just my little rant. Somewhere I fell in love with camera work, just like I fell in love with animation. Hollywood hasn't always been a cesspool for cinematography. Every now and then Spielberg shows that he understands that cinamatography can be an form (he invented a very famous shot in Jaws, while the forgettable AI has a pretty amazing long-shot in it), but when big name art-fag directors like Nolan can't even be bothered to be creative in the area of cinematography it just leaves me depressed.
Seriously, the stark, almost-punk camera work of Videodrome is way more creepy to me than anything from hollywood.

Tokyo Gore Police... very disappointed. I quite enjoyed the maniacal violence of The Machine Girl but Gore Police just seems to take itself a little to serious at times. It was very obvious i was watching something that felt thrown together on a shoe-string budget rather than something had any real thought put into it.

Watched the first third of Seven Samurai on Blu Ray. As much as I knew this was one of the greatest films ever, seeing again (it's been 5 years or so since I've watched it) just blows my mind. Show me a great director like this now?

Criterion release right? I recently watched the DVD and absolutely fell in love with the film. One of Toshirô Mifune's best performances. Despite the film's great length it never feels like its dragging. I wish directors today knew how to make a proper epic.CMoon wrote:Watched the first third of Seven Samurai on Blu Ray. Yes, Criterion. This is a film I know intimately, but coming back to it after several years and find it has lost nothing in the intervening years; it's really something. The idea of a top ten movies list is really hard except for this film. It would have to go on it. It is simply one of the best films ever made.

Man, it's been so long since I've watch Seven Samurai as well. I would guess even a little longer than 5 years. I really need to revisit it...Not my favorite Kurosawa, though, as that probably goes to The Hidden Fortress.

Pricey, but I'll probably pick up the Blu-Ray along with Yojimbo.
Speaking of great epics, I wonder when they'll get around to releasing Lawrence of Arabia on Blu-Ray. The cinematography in that film begs for a nice high def trailer.

A cinema here in Gothenburg, Sweden showed "The Seven Samurai" in all of it's glory. That was an awesome experience. I first saw the film as Swedish TV had a Kurosawa films theme one summer and showed lots of his movies, however this one was the one that really got to me. I later rented "The Hidden Fortress" and it's a real gem as well.

One many people aren't familiar with is Stray Dog. There are all the 'obvious' Kurosawa films, but somehow this one never comes up. It is among my favorite by him.
Also, Criterion is releasing Night of the Hunter on Blu Ray. Holy Fucking Shit!
