I dunno. This game is being built almost from scratch too, remember, and on alien hardware. I'm guessing it's because, given Sony's reluctance to see the thing on ps3, that it's pretty much the only viable path left to them.

go back and read strider77's post

why are they on crack for doing this? it seems perfectly logical to me. the ps2 port wouldn't have turned out, people would have bitched if it was an imperfect port on a console. but this other team can make a totally different game based on a popular name for the most popular system in japan, on a system where it would have virtually no competition in the genre. i can't go to HEY! today because i have to ride the train to go see family, might as well pop in some ketsui, it's more exciting than brain training. makes sense even to a gaijin like me!

This'll maybe give me reason to pack away the PSP and unpack the DS for awhile.

Of course the DS is the hottest selling machine on the planet, whos to blame Cave for wanting a piece of the pie. Can't understand why any japanese shmup dev would think about the 360 or to a lesser extent the PS3 to port to when the installed base is so small and chances of a niche title making big profit is infantessimal.
It says alot about the japanese market when Enix pegged the DS, over the most powerful new systems, for the new DQ. They want money, and they're gonna get it.

So Black Label will not be perfect, but it'll probably sell.
If a home port is in the making Wii might be the best bet, its got more power under the hood than a PS2... so who knows? :)

any idea when it will be released? This thing has been talked about for quite a few months now...

I wonder why Cave opted to go with Ketsui. Surely it can't be their most loved title. Then again, I don't live in Japan. from what I hear though the Mushi series and obviously DDP series are the most popular.

Porting some shmups onto consoles don't make that much money.

Many arcade players prefer playing the game IN an arcade.

Cave has nothing to do with it. Arika still had the Ketsui license, and it looks like they wanted to get SOMETHING out of it after the PS2 port failed, so this DS game was apparently the best option for the time being. Arika did that Forever Blue game for the Wii (published by Nintendo) recently, so they aren't averse to Nintendo systems.
So Black Label will not be perfect, but it'll probably sell.
It's not "black label", it has been called "Death label", but that'll probably change upon its release. The unofficial title being used by Mihara is "Ketsui DS".

As for the release date, who knows. I remember seeing Mihara post something about how he'd like to release it by Feb 2008, but don't quote me on that.

From neo arcadia translated from Frenchwhich was translated from Japanese probably!

The good named ketsui is a mythical shoot' EM up of Cellar, left in 2002 in arcade and never left on console. The game is regarded as one of best (if it is not the best) shot of the Cave firm, and still is very played in the rooms in Japan. And well the play finally will leave on console... but on Nintendo DS!!! Small recall of the facts: March 31, Mihara (the boss of the Arika company) presents at the time of the evening "Gamer Lounge" at Akihabara a demonstration which it programmed only version of Ketsui on Nintendo DS! Stupor, the play turns perfectly, but one was unaware of (until today) if it would leave really a day in the trade. And well veiled that Mihara declares on its blog that Ketsui on DS really will leave. The play will not be a faithful adaptation, but Ketsui with paterns of balls adapted to the portable console of Nintendo. The title should be "Ketsui Remix besides". Not yet of date of exit, but one should know some more in the days which come.

no... people on HERE would have bitched it wasn't a perfect port. I don't care what it is, I would have MUCH rather have had it on real console and not some portable crap.

don't get me wrong i like my DS ect but but i don't want to play something like this on a portable ESPECIALLY when there is no BIG BOY version.

if ESPgaluda could be done that well on PS2 and Dodonpachi that well on PS1 then I could have gotten some sort of Ketsui port on PS2 that would have been exceptable to me. from reading the posts on the forum regarding why the PS2 port was canned... well I could have dealt with a little extra slowdown or some altered bullet patters to make it happen over this.

it's just like all those stupid cell phone ports.... lame
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Exactly, apparently all the other levels are pretty much perfect except the last level. I'm sure 99% of the people here would've taken that rather then nothing. Even if some people will complain about the last level, these are probably people who have access to the arcade game which is not that many around here. Who knows, maybe if Ketsui DS sells enough, they would consider the ps2/Wii port?

The PS2 port is gone folks. Never going to happen. A Wii or PS3 port would be the only things possible at this point.

Wait for Mihara's announcement on friday.

It's not Ketsui. It's Ketsui DS. One was made for a huge 28" vertical screen in an arcade, to be played with a stick. One is being made for a tiny 4" horizontal screen portable with the slightly restricted lever set being taken into account. It may look and sound similar, but no sane person would think of it as being an arcade port.

On a related note, I think the reason i'm so excited about this is that i've never been able to support a company I love so much until now. I've downloaded ROMS of the arcade releases, bought second hand PS2 ports, slotted a few quid into some privitely owned cabs and even wear an (unofficial) Cave t-shirt, but without the money to buy new PCB's, the sad fact is that Cave have never seen a penny of mine. Being able to buy this new will be a great way to support the company, with no excuses of expense or difficulty of obtaining it. And if this goes well, who knows what next? Origional IP's? More remixed classics? It's never going to be a viable alternative to straight up arcade gaming to some people, but inmho, bringing hardcore, well crafted score based gaming to the masses may well be the next stage in the evolution of this oldest of genres.

I found gameplay video here : http://gonintendo.com/?p=24251
It looks pretty good to me . I know its on a little screen and I would have preferred it on the PS2 , but you take what you can get . I might get another DS if this game turns out good .

i'm not sure but i think it is Mihara who is very sick and spends a lot of time in hospitals and thought to himself 'wouldn't it be great if i could fight Doom anywhere?'. so he created a boss battle game for on his ds and this game was shown to the public back in march, i think.

anyway, at that showcasing (and afterwards on the interwebs) it gained momentum and guess he/they/arika saw a business potential in 'ketsui on the ds' idea so they pursued it. so now, with any luck, we'll be playing ketsui ds early 2008. :)

You're just stuck in this mindset of I'd rather have this than that. I'd rather have an imperfect arcade port of Ketsui on the PS2 then a remix handheld version too. Does anyone here feel otherwise? Really doubt it. I'm talking about what makes business sense for them.

People on here would have bitched? Maybe the ones who can afford the PCB. I'm thinking the people who can go play the real thing for a few yen pieces would bitch more about paying for a full price console game that they can't even practice properly on. Those being the only people Arika thought would consider the purchase, it seems like a safe call. A short-sighted one, maybe.

Can I just ignore what you said about cell phone games... it's insulting if you're actually comparing the two. Go play some Judgement Silversword.

If I had the choice between the DS remix and the chance of a straight console port, i'd go for the DS version every time. This is a brand new game we're talking about here, not a 5 year old one that pretty much everyone who really wants to has played. I'm not saying I would veto the idea (I would actually be pretty damn excited!), but I've got more than enough cave ports already. Let's see something new!

Considering that all four of the prior PS2 Cave ports have included some additional remix/arrange mode, I think it is safe to assume that Arika originally intended to put Ketsui Death Label on the PS2 version.

Also, how is this new? It's a collection of boss battles from a five year old game with some minor additional scoring system. It's not some brand new IP or anything.

Finally, there have only been a measely 6 Cave home ports (half of them being the Pachi series).

Cave didn't opt anything, Cave doesn't care about console ports.
Bringing Ketsui to the DS is very likely also a business decision. The DS outsells EVERYTHING in Japan. The competition when it comes to shmups on the DS is basically ZERO. Having a Cave game (I don't count the mobile phone versions...) on the go is a novelty and should sell way better than another not so perfect PS2 port. The fact that the DS is region free might also sell "a few" additional copies.
Ketsui DS will be a much bigger affair than a PS2 port could ever be because this kind of game simply doesn't exist on the DS yet.

Of course Cave opted to do it, that seems silly to say otherwise. They are designing the game, no? I do see how it could have been greatly influenced by the decision of Akira since they are the distributor.

Why won't people stop complaining about not having the PS2 port? Just buy the PCB people, it's not that hard to find and it's going up in value so you can always resell it later to get your money back. Not to mention ports suck, and good for Cave for not caring about them.

Let's just talk about DS Ketsui here. *eagerly waits for Friday announcement*

ARIKA does the porting. Cave only gives them the rights to do so (and I imagine the arcade rom and a few tools they used)
And I think somebody already said that the game is no longer a boss rush, it's a full game. That was just the demo.

Are we straight yet?

That would indeed be a very nice outcome. XBLA/PSN and the DS are very good platforms for smaller arcade-style games.

for the fifty-billionth time, the game is NOT a port. Cave is doing the development and it is a new original game. So Cave (obviously) did make the decision though im sure Akira had significant influence on it.
