All I really do is compile the info that people here on the forum give me: there's a discussion thread where the process happens linked in my sig. Thanks for the kudos though. :)
However, some parts are clearly open to *different* interpretations and others assuming things that aren't clearly defined... e.g. the 'subject' when free-roaming; is it the weapon or the characters? etc...
You'll hafta phrase this a different way, I'm not sure exactly what you're referring to. In any event, many definitions I/we put up are somewhat open to interpretation, as there's never going to be a consensus on a lot of things, so the glossary is mainly there just to cover the essentials and let people make up their own minds.
Is there a deadline before it goes official? Just curious...
Never, really, heh heh. The thing is added to and otherwise edited whenever there's something worth changing...and I have the time to do it. It's nothing "serious," really, just something I thought might be nice to finally put together, and a bunch of people, as I mentioned, have helped me out. :)

No probs!... Cool, so that discussion thread is the arena (pun intended) to roam and define terms...

Yeah, sure... it's from the glossary definition for "Arena":
From unofficial glossary wrote:Arena Shooter: (also Free-Roaming Shooter) A shooting game, usually “top-down” oriented, which takes place within a confined area, sometimes consisting of separate, linked “rooms,” through which the player usually progresses manually, at his own pace, rather than having a scrolling screen to “nudge” him along, although there is often a time limit in play. Smash T.V. is one example. Not considered “pure” shmups by some players; sometimes grouped under borderliners.
... I bolded "Free-Roaming" and "him"... because from the above, you seem to be referring to the "character" that is "Free-Roaming". A few posts earlier in the thread, another interpretation seemed to label the "Free-Roaming" element to a characters "weapon"... Does that make it clearer? ...And which is it?

E.g. Robotron 2084 has independent control for character and weapon directions (both 8-way) using twin sticks. This is where I can see a point for confusion...

Also in the above quote, "confined area" can technically apply to other shmup sub-genres, e.g. Tempest... but it's obvious you were referring to Smash TV, because of your example... Maybe you can add a qualifier to make this distinction in the glossary?
BulletMagnet wrote:...In any event, many definitions I/we put up are somewhat open to interpretation, as there's never going to be a consensus on a lot of things, so the glossary is mainly there just to cover the essentials and let people make up their own minds.
Yeah, I can definitely understand that. And very useful it is too.

I've definitely got my own interpretations on certain definitions that I've expanded from the glossary, e.g. the XY plane being fundamental to shmups... this is obviously in a 'raw' state in this thread because I haven't expanded on many points (nor given the opportunity to)... but in my mind, I have a fully fleshed out model and that's all that matters, at-the-end-of-the-day...

That's cool. Deadlines are evil!

Something that might be worth adding after this years voting is over, are examples of "borderliners", after allowing for arena shmups...?

Technically, I suppose, I was using "him" to refer to the player holding the controller as opposed to said player's onscreen avatar, but the meaning is pretty much the same.
A few posts earlier in the thread, another interpretation seemed to label the "Free-Roaming" element to a characters "weapon"... Does that make it clearer? ...And which is it?
I haven't kept up very closely with this discussion, either now or when it's come up in the past, since, as I said before, I don't think there's really any sort of real consensus to be reached on exactly what qualifies as a "shmup," since there are always genre hybrids and other possible exceptions to rules which could go either way. For a vote like this I suppose it's kind of necessary, but other than that it's really never concerned me much.
Also in the above quote, "confined area" can technically apply to other shmup sub-genres, e.g. Tempest... but it's obvious you were referring to Smash TV, because of your example... Maybe you can add a qualifier to make this distinction in the glossary?
I probably should reword that, as the limited-scrolling screen in itself is a "confined area" of sorts...I'll attempt to address that in my next update.
Something that might be worth adding after this years voting is over, are examples of "borderliners", after allowing for arena shmups...?
I'd hafta check the glossary to be sure, but IIRC I did put in a few examples of "borderliner" games, and included a specific title or two. I don't know if I mentioned Arena shmups in there, as it got its own specific, separate item.

Exactly my sentiments. However, since Shmups.com is high profile and generally considered the premiere resource on the net, it should definitely set an example, because I've seen this site mocked for it's definition of what a shmup is... at least, I think because of the lack of clarity more than anything else... and the stuff in the 'Wiki' entries doesn't really help the clarification either...

RE: Senko and Psychic Force 2:

I mentioned earlier about using 'guard' as a differentiator... well, Asteroids Deluxe and Space Duel both have a 'shield' button, which kinda acts like a 'guard' button... so, heh, I suppose a melee/ guard combo rule could work... :?:

Why? Not everyone agrees with the every aspect of the definitions that keep being put forward (which are sometimes used as facts rather than what they are... opinions), and new people join all the time who weren't around when it was being knocked back and forth. Aren't people allowed to discuss it, especially on a site dedicated to the things?

Why not just make a thread for the topic, make it a sticky in one of the forums, and direct people there when the subject comes up in other threads? At least then there'd be a place for people to voice their agreements/disagreements on what one group of people decided on long ago, and the folks who are tired of discussing it would know which thread to avoid going into.

Edit: I realize that parts of this post originally came across as rather dickish, but that honestly wasn't my intent. As such, I toned it back a bit. Sorry about that.

As obnoxious as Image

is, this is the correct place for his obnoxious, endless pontification.

Also Bangaio is not a schmup.

Tough crowd. Love the hypocrisy.

Anyway, here's another stance on Senko,

Anyone else think Gradius V shouldn't be as high as it is (or was last year)? It's a great game and all but I think it's placing the last two years is due more to it getting a wide release in the states and being responsible (like Ikaruga perhaps) for bringing new players to the genre. I think it could slide more and more as time goes on.

.
That's what should be done. The distinction between what is and isn't considered a proper shooter will always be arbitrarily defined. There's no science involved, hence my facetious comment about scientifically proving a band was a particular genre. The definition is based on the "essential" criteria but because so many games push genre distinctions (as Turrican pointed out even with the fairly exhaustive definition they came up with Zaxxon is allowed only as an exception and doesn't actually fit the definition or as he said it allows 99% of what they want in and excludes most of what they don't) the argument is just going to keep going and going and going and going because there's always going to be a game riding the border that people will argue for. Then if the gatekeepers make an exception the border will be pushed further and further until the defined genre becomes meaningless. It really needs it's own thread.

...BUT I strongly disagree with the above. Because,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_table

...A precedence has already been set in Science for something far, far more difficult to understand than shmups, i.e. the fundamentals for classifying chemical elements...

Also,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venn_diagrams

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set

...Also a branch of mathematics, called Set Theory, can be used as a tool...

And I've used these techniques in my profession in Project Management/ Change Management...

OK, I'm going to derail the chemistry discussion going on to make a last minute push for... Twinkle Star Sprites! One of the most original and simply fun games I've ever played, and a pretty good shooter while we're at it as well.

Is all this really about ppl voting for Senko? Can they just do it already? I don't think it will win anyway.

EDIT: It looks like this really started with Bangaio. I say if ppl want to vote for Bangaio and Senko let 'em. If they get hon. mention it's not a big deal. And take the shmup debate into another thread.

Thank You.

I voted for Bangai-O without even worrying about whether it was eligible or not. Then a few people started to ask if it was eligible or not. Then Rob replied, saying it wasn't eligible... I disagreed...<rest of thread>

It's not about what 'wins'... it's about knowing what you can vote for...

Bangai-O is eligible and Zach has explicitely stated this. Senko needs clarification and was being debated, with no conclusion yet...

I really should go back and play Nexzr the next few days. I was considering it for my list, but I really hadn't played it in a while, so I decided it wouldn't be fair to bring it in. It really does have everything a 16-bit shooter should have, from graphics and sound to the hard as hell gameplay. This needs to change; luckily, I'll have the time to do it this weekend!

Q: Are we differentiating between the Summer Carnival and regular versions? The only difference I heard of was that the SC version has no cinemas, but are there more?

Nexzr Special is missing the Anime cutscenes, but instead it includes the Caravan score attack modes.

I wouldn't differentiate them in the top 25 list though, the main game is still exactly the same.

(BTW, it'll make my Top 25 as well. ;) )

I wouldn't either. I just took a photo of the summer carnival version because the white cover and blue spine look cool.

Very good! Still, including you that's only 5 votes so far. Nexzr really deserves I higher place. I think the problem is that not enough people have played it.

I think I need to edit my list a bit. I jumped the gun a little on Xexex just because it was new (to me) and I had yet to finish it. It is a great game, but it gets a bit too ridiculous near the end. I need to play it through a couple more times now that I'm not so star struck by the "coolness" of it.

On the "vote for a token cute-em-up" front, I haven't heard anyone mention Game Paradise yet. I'm usually not too keen on cute em ups in general, but it's definately the best out of what I've played, and it is unmistakably a cute em up. It's pretty high on my list, and not just as a mere token.

Yeah, it's great - this is another of those shmups that would be hovering just below the top 25 line for me. I do love it but I'm just not quite sure I could place it above some of the more 'meat and potatoes' titles in my top 25.

Just a few truism to share-- I love saying true things.

If our list is going to be genuinely representative, then

(i) it ought to have the best games from the developers that did the most to make the genre great: at the very least Konami, Cave, Psikyo, Raizing, Treasure, and Compile, but ideally also Irem, Takumi, Seibu, Techno Soft, and others.

(ii) it ought to have great stuff from each decade, including the 80s.

(iii) it ought to include the genre-defining classics, e.g., at least one game from series like R-Type, Gradius, and DDP.

To the extent that we fail to satisfy these, our list is not a complete success, I think. It would also be nice if important sub-genres like cute-em-ups are represented, but I fear in this particular case that no single cute-em-up stands out sufficiently to take the prize. (Just not nearly enough agreement on the question: What's the best cute-em-up?)

/\/\/\ Agreed.

If games like Galaga aren't on the list, it can never be "the greatest shmups of all time", just the most popular of today.

For a true list of the greatest games of all time, see my list, heheh.

I like the fact that we each have differing standards for what makes a greatest shooter of all time, and am not really bothered if games from each period (be it decade, general tech generations, etc.) do not appear on the list. I personally see my list as being games I have the most fun with right now over all shooters; as a result, a lot of the historically important stuff gets left out of my list simply because their formula has been refined over the years into deeper, more satisfying games. As great as games like Space Invaders may have been, I just can't see myself playing it for very long in this day and age when there's a thousand other games which have experimented, and in many cases, improved on, the formula. On the other hand, there's plenty of people here who see this list as the 25 greatest games of their time, and may vote according to how significant each game was when it was released, or see how much fun they had with it when they first played it. All methods are valid, of course!

However, I don't think we really need to worry about the really major franchises being left out - I think the best games from the great developers will naturally make its way to the top because they are games that were great then and now. Just taking a close look at the prior lists, I think they are pretty well represented, and am confident that they'll make the top 25, if not at least the Honorable Mentions.
