I've preordered it. I'm not saying no to the spiritual successor of Parodius, and this is probably all we'll see from Konami in the shmup department for the next year. The character art is pretty bad but that's not really what matters.BulletMagnet wrote:This is supposed to be out in a week or two, right? Has anyone pre-ordered it? I'm holding off for now, until a wider range of impressions is available...
The online modes look neat and since I'm close to Japan, I should be able to find some action.
x2Elixir wrote:Odd. Only 13 achievements? In a way, I feel a bit relieved after trying to deal with Raiden IV's achievements.
I look forward to playing this one eventually - I doubt I will be able to secure a copy with the joystick, so I will likely be ordering this one in December or January.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Famitsu reviews are not credible. Every single shooter will get the same score, look at past reviews of shooters and you'll see. They give scores based on the potential of the game, fans and advertisements. Shooters aren't popular enough anymore to justify a high score, whereas you'll never, ever see a big-name RPG get a low score.

Agrees with Famitsu's score of a 26 for TF6. Now a 26 isn't a bad game at all it's about average if you think about it.adversity1 wrote:denial.
they were right on with TF6. otomedius is not that hot. still might pick it up tho.
Otoedius looks exactly like Gradius V with the exception of cutsy boobs and colorful graphics (which I love, big fan of the Parodius games btw have all of them) which isn't really anything new over Gradius V. I've read that the graphics weren't as good as Gradius V either.
Even with the average score given I'll probably pick this game up when it hits here in North America. I picked up TF6 knowing it got an average score and I'm sure Shmup fans will do the same.
Rock and Roll!
Thunder Force VI was solid gold and I cannot wait to get Otomedius!
My only complains are the controls… will I be able to get away with using a regular stick? how vital are the touch screen/right analog to the game play? Xbox 360 dpad is garbage can and it may be broken from when I play Otomedius from frustrations…

I'm not sure how much I'm expecting out of the game but I preordered it. I've always been a Gradius & Parodius sucker, so I figured why not.
IIRC Famitsu gave pretty high scores to DDP:DOJ for the PS2. (A quick Googling gave me that it got a 34/40, but the site didn't list the individual numbers).
My humble opinion of Famitsu: I think Famitsu scores are a pretty accurate gauge of what a non-genre fan will think of a game after playing it for 3 hours or so.

R4: 7/7/7/7
Shikigami 3: 6/7/7/6
SNR: 8/9/6/7
These scores are all very close to each other. Shooters won't score high, their era is over. Famitsu is known to base reviews heavily on advertising and power of the publisher. It's known that they send reviews to big publishers beforehand and they have to accept them, you will never ever see a big-hyped title with big advertising get a low score in Famitsu, regardless of the game's quality. Ninety Nine Nights got 10/9/9/9, you'd have to be crazy to think the game is actually up to that quality level. I dunno what happened with DOJ for PS2, probably because Cave is a big name for shooters, and are also heavily tied to the Arcadia magazine. It'll be interesting to see how their 360 shooters score.
Huh, I thought Famitsu didn't review XBLA games, or if they do it's very minor. I have the 360 review wrap-up book with the original reviews for every game up until last month, and no XBLA games are listed. Either way, I don't think many people will argue that Ikaruga is way overhyped and overscored by most outlets. Just proves that Famitsu follows the hype and revenue.EOJ wrote:Famitsu Ikaruga review: 8/10/10/8 (36/40)
BTW everyone I've talked to who has actually played Otomedius in the arcades has said it's a really crappy game. Don't get your hopes up.
I've played Otomedius in the arcade many times, I live in Japan and I'm a huge fan of the game. It's different from other shooters, but I really like how you can play it at your own pace. No one really plays it single player anymore after the online modes opened up anyway, which requires you to have completely different strategies. I personally think this game gets a bad rep, but I can understand why many people don't like it.
OMG... they seriously gave Mushi and Ibara a 26?? Honestly those two games deserves more than a 26 in my opinion.Elixir wrote:DoDonPachi Dai-Oujou PS2 Arika 34

Mushihimesama PS2 Taito 26
Raiden III PS2 Taito 26
Homura PS2 Taito 21
Fun facts: No Metal Slug game has hit 30 or above, same with any Idea Factory game. Dunno if they reviewed Galuda as I can't find it anywhere.
I've never really liked Raiden III and I never played Homura before so I don't care about those two.
But seriously Thunderforce VI on par with Ibara and Mushi just baffles me.
I've been watching Youtube videos of the game, I'm a huge fan of the Parodius games but this game looks entirely different. Really need more feedback with some of the players who actually have played it and have played the original Parodius games.EOJ wrote:Famitsu Ikaruga review: 8/10/10/8 (36/40)

Can you provide more feedback, maybe a small review based on your experienced? I'm curious how Otomedius compares to previous Parodius games? Or is it an entirely different game on it's own? Looks like Gradius V to me with boobs and cutsy graphics.originalz wrote: I've played Otomedius in the arcade many times, I live in Japan and I'm a huge fan of the game. What I loved about the previous Parodius games was that there was no gimmick, it was pure Gradius but only with hilarious animation with and a fun comic design. I found the difficulty in Parodius to be much easier than Gradius games too.
Thanks

How is that baffling? PS2 Mushi and Ibara were both lacklustre ports.Shelcoof wrote:OMG... they seriously gave Mushi and Ibara a 26?? Honestly those two games deserves more than a 26 in my opinion.Elixir wrote:DoDonPachi Dai-Oujou PS2 Arika 34

Also, you should try out Homura, it's very Takumi-esque.
That review was for the DC version, back in 9/2002. Before Ikaruga was hyped or had any console revenue.originalz wrote:Huh, I thought Famitsu didn't review XBLA games, or if they do it's very minor. Well the way I see it is that, if your going to port an Arcade game to a home console there isn't really much to expect. With Mushi and Ibara, there was no real surprise to what gamers were getting. They even got a few extras like Arrange Mode (I'm guessing Arrange mode is only available on home console? btw I've never played the Arcade version so if this is false then I'm sorry) and gallery etc.Kiken wrote: How is that baffling? Both games in my opinion are dead on (from a general perspective) and the only gripes and complaints made are from the hardcore who can tell the small differences but from a general point of view they were perfect ports with a few extras thrown in there as well.
The only thing that can drag down the score is the actual game. And in my opinion Mushi and Ibara are both up there as being on top of the Shmup food chain.
Now if Ikaruga can get a solid score why can't Mushi and Ibara as well? Ikaruga was ported and had some extras but other than that I don't see any difference between Ikaruga Port and Mushi, Ibara port? All three games are excellent and ported as accurate as they can be to the Arcade versions.
I guess what I'm trying to say, is the game being scored based on how good the port is or the actual game? I hope i didn't confuse anyone lol.
Yhaa I'll try to get around to trying out Homura. I just started getting back into shooters and finding out about all these Cave ports that made it onto home release and man I'm having a blast already. Playing catch up is hard but at least I'm not bored hehe
I havn't read much about Homura here on the forums so I'm guessing it's not as popular?
