I note that the good players featured (at Cave, and the two guys in the apartment) were all using a more conventional joystick technique, whereas the guys in the arcades were all using that 'underneath the ball' technique. Got to wonder how much of the latter is just a fashion / 'everyone does it' thing.

The 'under the ball' control style is pretty comfortable if you are used to fighting games in the arcade. I've seen players holding the arcade joystick ball in a 'cupping' grip style (which is great for the rolling command motions in games like Streetfighter), while I seen other players holding an arcade joystick like a gearstick. In the end though it has nothing to do with what is fashion or not, it's all about what you find comfortable.Eps wrote:I note that the good players featured (at Cave, and the two guys in the apartment) were all using a more conventional joystick technique, whereas the guys in the arcades were all using that 'underneath the ball' technique. Palm almost flat on the control panel, with the arcade stick between my thumb and index finger is how I hold an arcade joystick (or used to, I'm more of a joypad person now).
EDIT: Oh yeah, thanks for the subtitle file and the documentary. It was interesting viewing. ^_^
EDIT: Interesting to hear the guy being interviewed mentioning Battle Garegga as the first manic shootemup created.

well, just few words to say that Alex Pilot did a great job on this stuff and manage to seek the (quite) whole entire history of shmup in a 30 minutes report.
of course, it would have been nice to show SWY cleaning 2 loops in KETSUI but it is a commercial chanel. Iit would take 3 hours more if we'd'like showned anything we get

Excellent work; very well put together! Although, I'm not sure if I used the subtitle file correctly-I was just reading it and looking at the screen when not reading it.1up wrote:thanksKrgFn wrote:ok I have put the subtitle file on the site:

Yes, but... is it really a manic shmup?? I always think of it as an hybrid... for me, the first manic is Donpachi, or Dodonpachi... It coul'd be an interesting tought to start a discussion

According to an interview with the Cave developers, Garegga spawned Donpachi/Dodonpachi, as the developers were originally worried that a game with lots of bullets wouldn't be well received (or something to that effect). After seeing the success of Garegga, they decided to go ahead with it (and outdo it in the number of bullets).stratos wrote:Yes, but... is it really a manic shmup?? It was touched upon in the documentary, and even the interviewers in the docmentary expected the guy being questioned to mention Batsugun as the first.
I think GaijinPunch has the translated interview with Cave on his website.

Use VLC, load the video, and in the same options screen, load the subtitle. Then when you play the video, switch on the subtitle track.dave4shmups wrote:How do you get the subtitles to run along with the video?? Which file do you place in which folder?

In Japan this technique is called "wineglass style", since it apparently resembles the way a wineglass is held.Eps wrote:I note that the good players featured (at Cave, and the two guys in the apartment) were all using a more conventional joystick technique, whereas the guys in the arcades were all using that 'underneath the ball' technique.
Funnily enough though, this is only the way wine novices hold their glass, as etiquette demands that the glass be held by the stem (the reason for its existence being, that holding the actual container part of the wineglass with your hand will warm up the wine).
...okay, enough smart assing, I'm gonna go watch the documentary.

This documentary is owned by GameOne, a french VG channel. Many (French) fans have already asked if a DVD release, maybe a bit longer, was planned, but Alex Pilot replied it was up to GameOne. History will tell...dave4shmups wrote:Man, I would buy this on DVD if I could!
BTW all documentaries by Alex are owned by GameOne and are about the history of something. You shouldn't need more clues to find them...[/b]

post zaxxon game on the neo geo system?
sorry for bumping this but what is the name of the game when they talk about neo-geo? it looks like a modern zaxxon with rolling cogwheels on the ground.

I thought that was Tomii from R-type fame.1up wrote:I think its one of the G.Rev guys that mentions that he made a GBA sidescrolling shmup? did he mention the name?
Man I wish they'd interview him about Irem's past and present, how R-type came about, their relationship with SNK and the future of shmups in general.
This was good too though, thanks Alex et all.
