Neon, if you have a PCE setup, check out Dragon Egg. It's no Super Mario World, but I really enjoyed it. You have a backpack w/ a baby dragon in it and you feed it throughout the levels and it grows more powerful to defeat your enemies.

I picked up this little gem recently, "Aleck Bordon Adventure: Tower & Shaft". Somone mentioned it on here before as a modern platformer (being it was released in 2003). Its very simplistic gameplay, like Star Trigon, with artwork/layout similar to Mr. Driller. Its made by Aruze, and they also had a GBA port. The PCB had been on YAJ, and may be hard to come by (unemulated too). Its actually two games in one, a climbing game (Tower) and a falling game (Shaft). Both get highly addictive as the difficulty increases. They have standard easy/normal/hard as well as endless boards. There are some crazy 300ish floor highscores on my PCB. Here are a few pics...

When you die, his ghost floats away, and looks kinda pissed. I just love the game over pic.

Going back to the Amiga I absolutely loved the Blues Brothers game.

I liked Superfrog as well, I have it on CD32 but no hardware to play it.
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Cool. I was wondering what that Tower and Shaft game was. Now there's yet another GBA game I want to get.

Rodland is defintiely a good one that was mentioned earlier in the thread. The whole "not jumping" thing is very hard to get used to though. I actually cranked up MAME earlier today and gave a lot of these a whirl (even before checking this thread). Don Doko Don is one that I definitely need to give more attention to. I dismissed it prematurely a while ago due to the color scheme I'm not so big on.

The main problem is I really suck at these games. I must practice.

Rodland and Parasol Stars are the best games mentioned on this thread. Both had excellent Amiga versions - Some people say Rodland on Amiga is better than the origina arcade.. it was made by the same guys who made the Silkworm port, which is arguably better than the arcade version too.

On Amiga, the best platform games IMO are (Besides the obvious Turrican series):
Ruff 'n' Tumble: http://hol.abime.net/1292
Putty: http://hol.abime.net/1181
Arabian Nights: http://hol.abime.net/3289
Soccer Kid: http://hol.abime.net/1993

I'll second those. Ruff 'n' Tumble especially, although I wish they had included 2-button joystick support for that one.

Here are some other Amiga platformers that I like:

Naughty Ones
Flimbo's Quest - also great on C64
Magic Pockets
PP Hammer - Mr. Driller fans check this one ;)
Qwak
Superfrog
Yo! Joe
Bubble and Squeak
And even though it seems to be in bad taste to mention this game these days,
Zool 2 - I love the music

I love Toki and Rodland <3

Some nice Amiga titles spring to mind:

Flood

Great graphics, great sounds, great ideas.. it was popular when it was released, but nowadays seems to be efficiently forgotten :(

The Seven Gates of Jambala

I guess this one never gained public attention, but it's definitely one of the most atmospheric platformers, much thanks to really haunting and beautiful music. I would still recommend it.

Flood, I'd forgotten about that. The first 16 bit game I ever played, gonna have to dig that back out sometime.

Damn, how did I forget to mention Qwak?

Qwak is in the same league, if not better than Parasol Stars and Rodland. Awesome, awesome game. Rando probably would like it a lot, considering the games he have been listing :)

Yo! Joe was really cool too, I think it was the only Amiga game by Hudson which was exclusive to the system (Or did that also had a PCE version that I don't know?)... shame it was TOO DAMN easy.

P.P. Hammer for me was like the MSX game "King's Valley"... very nice game too.

And Flood's ending was really.... amusing indeed... :)

You da man! This one has been huge on my radar since the JAMMA show of '02. Big massive herculean props to you for those screenshots. Aside from Paleface's GBA screens at TFP, it has been a real chore finding any info/screens for this game.

I need to get me both that weirdo arcade one (isn't that thing some sort of N64 variation?) and the GBA one. I assume they play about the same but my time spent with the GBA one indicates that I'll definitely be needing both.

How much did that cost you BTW?

Wasn't cheap at 20000Y. Whats funny is that its the same kit pictured on system16's site http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=816 (they took the pic from the YAJ auction). Copied artwork I'm afraid. The Aleck 64 board is a weird one, some games wont even boot if you don't have the special analog sticks plugged into the PCB (not a problem with this game).

BTW: while I was on my aleck 64 kick, I also bought Aruze's Donchan Puzzle Hanabi de Doon! Kit also pictured on system16. Also has a GBA port. Turns out I like this game a whole lot. An interesting mix of slots and puyo puyo.

A forum member picked one up (w/ factory art, as I recall) from Bill Burger off the ebay a couple months back for like $65. Yes, I was bummed that I forgot to bid (it was in my watch list  ).

Although learning that doesn't make me feel to happy about paying ~$175USD, I'm not in this hobby just to brag to others about the incredible deals I've gotten. Good for him, whoever it was.

Be warned, Bill Burger screwed me on a Naomi kit auction. Even if the item description states "used tested working" he will always add "no warrenty/returns". Read the fine print, and cross your fingers.

This is on Ebay, or YAJ? It's pretty standard on the latter.

My favourites are Don Doko Don, Bubble Bobble, Parasol Stars (single screen). My favourite scrolling platform game is Rainbow Islands. So there.

Bill Burger is on ebay. YAJ dosen't usually sell full Naomi hardware kits, only individual pieces.

just wanted to thank some members for this thread.

played a few of these casually, and wasn't impressed. went around and gave them a more serious try and some have become permanent members on my hard drive.

notables include:

toki: knew about this before, and loved ben.shinobi's replay (his precision is unbelievable)

Nightmare in the Dark: read about it on neo-geo.com but never looked into it. in the end, i think it is pretty fun (and good looking) but like Pa said, that shit plays slow as hell.

Wardner: interesting. never played a scroller that plays like this. and watching a replay via marp, this game looks like an exact science.

Zupapa: instant love. thanks Pa.

later tonight i'll give parasol stars, don doko don, and diet gogo (among others) a try they deserve. ^_^
I have no sig whatsoever.

Lucky you. I've played that one at Paleface's house and it is just brilliant. Simplicity at its finest.
