Annnnd they've rowed back on it already, because Ninty has finally announced smaller cart sizes. Doesn't fix the speed and capacity issues with AAA ports, but at least helps out smaller/indie/retro titles like this

They're swapping to a full cart, but it's going to increase the retail price. They plan on honouring preorders at the original price.

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
The real question is whether or not is this a Switch 2 edition cart, or just a switch 2 cart.
... Hey, I'm not the one who designed this kind of nomenclature. I would've told the marketing team to figure out a better classification system that just 'works' so we don't have this kind of confusion.

Uh oh! Looks like Nintendo didn't announce bigger cart sizes and ININ may have slipped up. https://www.theverge.com/news/848462/ni ... inin-games

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
But, the company that has been stringing people along about Switch physical cartridges with lies about production status since they went to shit in early 2023 wouldn't misrepresent something! That just couldn't be the case!
My conspiracy minded take: ININ announced R-Type Dimensions III on a key card, nobody wanted to preorder a key card (especially from these clowns), so they scrambled to find a way to spin it as "we've found a solution, with everything on cart!" Which is perhaps a mixture of wishful thinking that more cart sizes would be available by the time they actually go into physical production on this game (in what, 2028 knowing them?), or just accepting that they could eat the cost of a cart from the existing sizes if needed.
Of course, always a possibility that they did have some real information from Nintendo that just wasn't supposed to be publicly disclosed (and then they heard about it from Nintendo, so publicly backtracked). But IDK, given the source, I wouldn't trust a thing ININ says.

Nintendeal "confirmed" (how? they didn't say) two days ago that there would be smaller cards coming in the future: https://bsky.app/profile/nintendeal.com ... 6x4jlgkk2u
And Ars Technica references other rumours about lower cart sizes coming as well: https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2025/12/ ... key-cards/ So I suppose it's possible that Nintendo has been providing this information to publishers, and someone at ININ was a little too hasty about checking if a formal announcement was actually out before putting out a press release.

ININ = bad guys, right? I don't think they publish anything here, so I am pretty unfamiliar with them. There is a more pressing matter, though:
If it makes you feel better, I'm still waiting for my Ginga Force + Natsuki Chronicles/refund from Worst Press Games. I imagine people are still waiting for Crimzon Clover, too.

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
ININ are basically the parent company of Strictly Limited, pretty sure they only deal in Europe and don't have an overseas arm/partner. Though I wonder whether they've been funnelling their debt into Strictly Limited because suspiciously they've managed to get retail releases out while Strictly Limited has been constrained by an alleged "global market slowdown". I'm assuming there'll be a JP/Asia release of Dimensions III though, it's extremely unusual for Europe to get something like this first... never mind exclusive!Steven wrote: ↑Sat Dec 20, 2025 3:24 am ININ = bad guys, right? First Press appear to have gone dark entirely, glad I didn't pre-order Crimzon Clover - I think that was originally planned for mid-2021. Strictly appear to be back on funding back orders with new pre-orders, which appears to be why the release schedule is a trickle in random order - not many takers for the new pre-orders, can't imagine why

Posting to move the thread up a bit. There was no R-type III ever in the arcades, was there? (Leo, which wasn't even a "real" R-type at the time, was the last arcade coin-op?).

Sorry I missed the thread.
I think this looks really impressive and a step up from the HD graphics in R-Type Dimensions for R-Type and R-Type II.
I'm very much looking forward to it. R-Type fans, we are eating, with Delta HD Boosted already out, Tactics I+2 Cosmos in March and now R-Type Dimensions III in May.
R-Type LEO was officially, but that supposedly started off as another game (can't confirm this, maybe someone can).
I would consider PULSTAR (1995) on Neo Geo MVS to be the last "R-Type" game in arcades, even though it wasn't called R-Type. Apparently, Aicom, the developer behind Pulstar, had former Irem staff. So did Last Resort, which leaned more toward the graphical style of R-Type II, highly detailed.

This is going to be reminiscent of what I asked about earlier, but has there been any information about how this is being made? I hope they have the source code this time. If not, I may pass, as I have the Retro-Bit SNES cart already... not that I can play it anymore because I have since sold my Super Nt and have only SFCs, but that's a different problem.

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
The only clue I've seen is that the official copy for the game promises that you can swap graphical styles on the fly, presumably like the Halo remasters that let you toggle between OG and HD versions at the touch of a button. That would suggest that the paint-over is just that, and not some sloppy "close-ish" rebuild. BUT that's a big guess, and could just be some smart copy to nab pre-orders. This one is shipping on a REAL CART ON SWITCH 2 so I'm kind of eyeing it as the first shmup I add to that side of the collection.Steven wrote: ↑Tue Jan 27, 2026 5:26 am This is going to be reminiscent of what I asked about earlier, but has there been any information about how this is being made? Re: R-Type Dimensions III
Might want to hold your horses — in its current state it sounds like it might be worse than the GBA port.

Normal bullets going through the Shadow Force, missing intro parts on a lot of the soundtrack, missing animations (e.g. Gains' double-take before smashing into the wall), and other iffy things being pointed out as we speak, but not being able to clear it is chef-kiss stuff. The first Dimensions had its issues but this is far more like something contemporary with that, from the bad old days of XBLA. (Feels like everything releases in this kind of state now...)

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
This released today, huh. Interesting. But if it's complete shit, I guess I don't care.
Part of me wants to say that devs should have standards and not put out broken garbage.
Another part of me realizes that devs have deadlines and limited budgets and maybe clueless executives and shareholders somewhere down the line, all of which doom potentially good things.
I don't really wonder which one of these two things it was, but hopefully this gets fixed.
The most interesting aspect is that it's cheaper to buy the set with this + Dimensions on Steam than to buy just this. Is this a mistake? Why would anyone ever choose to pay more to get less stuff, especially when it's digital stuff that takes up literally zero physical space? I have no idea, but I'm sure there is some weird person somewhere who would do it.
I am not the best judge of aspect ratio (I'm pretty horrible at it, so I hope I am wrong) and I'd have to check against the original game to be sure, but it looks to me that the aspect ratio when using the 2D graphics is totally fucked BTW, like they stretched it to fill not-quite-16:9 instead of it actually being native not-quite-16:9. Wonderful. That alone makes me want to never buy this and pretend it doesn't exist.

Darn. Hopefully this gets patched. Arent these graphic-switch remasters supposed to be the easiest games not to screw up considering you're not changing core mechanics?

Re: R-Type Dimensions III
Kritzelkratz 3000 also did last year's X-Out resurfaced - another game released with softlock bugs. X-Out had the softlock patched out, but the other inconsistencies with that game were never addressed. No reason to expect any better with R-Type Dimensions III.
- Music intros are missing/not implemented.
- Music doesn't loop. It fades out and restarts, making you think that you've reached the boss.
- Stage one small mecha's shots penetrate the force, I'm sure this was loop2 behavior.
- Stage two walkers shots penetrate the force. This never happened in the original.
- hitboxes are all over place, back of the screen trick to dodge the falling lava on stage 4 flat out doesn't work anymore.
- Weapon damage is all over the place. Full charge beam no longer penetrates some enemies on stage one, Stage two boss goes down in two hits (but not always???) Hyper takes out the wheel boss instantly on stage 5. Rest of the weapons seem to do a pathetic amount of damage, especially against bosses.
- Hitbox for the X2 charge beam is just wrong. You can no longer hit enemies right above and below you. No longer cancels enemy bullets.
- When fully armed with Cyclone Force's yellow capsule laser, bits no longer shoot the green seeker lasers. They're completely missing.
- Seems to be possible to detach the force at a stage clear and lose it somehow???
- During a section on the final stage where you have to hide in the portal, a Pow comes out and kills you. Seems to be unavoidable - the timing of the scenery fading out was different in the original.
- Two ways to trigger a softlock on the final boss: Allow the spinning orbs to stay on screen so they kill you after the boss dies - I was also able to softlock the game by allow the final form's homing shots to stay on screen although they dont always do this.
- Spinning arms sequence at the final boss seems to end too quickly. Final form doesnt do it's mega-spam attack if you dont attack it. (it does but you have to wait forever)
- Ending sequence is not synced to the music.
- Unforgivable: They spelled Garaxy of Abyss wrong.

Outstanding stuff, SCC. Most of these clips will be covered by the above, but you should still see this shit.
It's almost like they're eyeballing everything with no access to code, in the grand tradition of many bad shmup ports, but without bothering to look. (Like, is it vibe-coded or what? Everything about it seems 'off' at best and broken at worst. Obv the standard kneejerk response to any sloppy-looking stuff now is "is this genAI?" but this genuinely looks like it hasn't seen a human worker in its life...)

At least the QA process seems to have been non-existent on this port.

Weird thing is, this isnt out in Japan yet. Im wondering if US players are “beta testing” it before the Japanese June release.
Also, how faithful are the graphic effects for the classic mode? I have t seen any of the cool tube effects in stage 1 in videos. Most videos just show the new geaphics.

This is not what I expected.
when R-Type Dimensions originally released on Xbox 360 in 2009, both R-Type I and R-Type II, the games seemed very polished there weren't any major issues. Sure, it was not perfectly hit-accurate with the PCBs, but it wasn't a mess either. Totally fine for casuals and anyone other than R-Type arcade perfectionists.
But R-Type Dimensions III seems like a real mess at launch. I'm going to wait and hopefully that pays off.

R-TYPE III in general is pretty good, it's just the first stage that is a real bonkers. But once you finish that stage, the game really starts.
