I remember renting video games from the video rental a couple of times, and while I based my selection on the reviews from the video games magazine I bought each month, mate rented the shittiest games. I got Capcom's Mickey Magical Quest and Aladdin, friend rented Rise of the Robots and Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego

Blockbuster Video saved me a fortune in SNES games. An iffy-looking Master System game for £20 could be tolerated, not so much for the SNES where games were routinely £45. I rented some absolute dreck - yes, including Rise of the Robots - and also games that were so easy, I'd clear them in 2 days.

SNES Rise of the Robots was a big self-own for me. I'd had a bad day at school or something and my mum took me into town to buy a new game as a treat.

There were always a few duds around the house — Bart vs. the Space Mutants, Sylvester & Tweety, Stimpy's Invention — but my fondest memory is of the time I bought Super Double Dragon and played it for an hour with my profoundly unimpressed dad, who then drove me back to the shop to swap it for Cool Spot.

First video game console in the house was Atari 2600. In the early 90's, our television did not have an actual SCART entry, so we had to go for Atari 2600 which was the only one we found who allowed to plug on TV through antenna entry !

On this system I was given some decent games like Space Invaders, Commando, Moon Patrol.

Then there was Ghostbusters. Never understood the game, but played a ton of it !

Ghostbusters is an interesting one. Actually pretty impressive for the 2600 and better than the flawed NES port.

Yes, now that I do have access to the internet, I read about the game system in Ghostbusters Atari 2600, and it sounds actually quite good. Too bad the game itself does not explain it at all. Maybe the game manual did, but I was too young/impatient to read english at that time.

That wasn't unique to Ghostbusters. Some games were built around reading the manual or included comic book (Swordquest says hi). Some games had a ton of variations only listed by number. In some cases, I ended up starting a 2p game by accident.
