Ah that's right these handheld devices are ARM and most of the Linux games are surely compiled for x86/amd64. On itch.io I have seen some games with a Raspberry Pi download link which must be the Linux ARM compile. I don't see a good way to filter for those but I would think they should work consistently on these handhelds.
These devices are a pretty new thing. They seem to have appeared around 2023 with the RGB30 (although there may be more to their history than that). As they grow in popularity hopefully Linux shmup devs will start making ARM "Raspberry Pi" compiles available more often.
Pico-8 shmups seem to be taking off. The new issue of Shmup_Lyf describes a Pico shmup revolution and renaissance.
Yeah, I would think linux-arm64 releases would work, and that's a good point about how recent the linux-based emulation devices are. Could absolutely see people starting to specifically target them down the line.
I should really try out more Pico-8 shmups, there are so many of them.
well i'm really glad to stumble on this threadd because i bought my rgcubeXX last month. i'm wondering to do a list of shmups that work well on it, would be cool to do... also love the dpad, i have larger hand so i think i need a better grip for it. or a grip at all....
I've had one of these for quite a while, but my use case is entirely different. I am very picky about aspect ratios, so I use my RG Cube XX for handhelds that essentially had square aspect ratios (technically 10:9): GB, GG, GBC, NGP, and NGPC and then the 8:7 modes for NES, PCE, and SNES. YMMV on the latter group, depending if you like the 4:3 stretching that happened on CRTs at the time.
