I know Neon was teasing me, I just wanted to let Strych. know that I didn't mean any of what I said personally, and I hope he's not ticked off at me.

I can understand everyone's concerns about over-moderated forums, I just don't personally see this forum as heading in that direction. *shrugs*

I actually had to close that window as soon as it opened while I was at work, as it had the potential to cause issues. You wouldn't believe the HR training we have to take.

But I don't have any problems with the topic/thread itself. I knew I shouldn't have clicked the link ... just had to. I like the threads at fark.com, if there is any questionable imagery, they append (NSFW) or (possibly NSFW) to the title.

Obviously nothing in that thread had nudity, but over here where lawsuits run rampant, it doesn't take much to stir the HR monkeys.
My secret is to exclaim "POP UP! POP UP! I WASN'T LOOKING FOR PORN I SWEAR!" Actually... no one cares what I do at work. But fazed.net usually does me in. See Entry:Man Chicken. Can you believe that no one else finds that hilarious?

I really think that we need a sticky in the trading post section highlighting where we can buy arcade boards again. I miss that.

Yep this is exactly what I'm talking about. And for the forseeable future Shmups Forum will continue to try to be a "work-safe" site, otherwise we'd unfairly and unnecessarily cut out a portion of our shmup fan audience who are in workplaces.

Probably won't be standardizing "NSFW" into thread titles here, since some people still don't know what that means, but we won't allow non-worksafe stuff in embedded images period and repeat violations of that will be treated seriously.

While I don't have any problems browsing, erm, sites of sexual content at work, I don't think what TF did in the hot shmups chick -thread was overmoderation. It only makes perfect sense to change embedded images to URLs anyway to cut down on loading time, for those ill-fortunate souls without a fast internet connection. And that post he removed? Good riddance.

Images in sigs, however, should either be removed altogether or limited to a very small size. In some forums it gets ridiculous to see sig images bigger than actual posts.

In this case I think I would agree (for the reasons Ghegs listed).

However I dunno if screwing around during paid hours (salary or hourly) is altogether acceptable...then again I have the luxuries of a good employer and easy-to-find-employment (entry level bumfuck jobs till I get my degree).

What exactly are you guys talking about? I'm assuming "NSFW" means Not Safe For Work.
Regardless, if a co-worker or boss caught you doing something other than your work, surely that would cause a frown no matter "how safe" the picture/image is.

Not only do you guys want to turn Shmups.com into a "daycare" center, but now it has to be "worksafe" as well!?
If this place gets any more "politically correct", I'm going to puke!

What ever happend to the good ole days, back when it was just ten guys discussing how great ThunderForce III is, and that even though Gradius III (SNES) had serious slowdown; it was/still is awesome.

Am I out of line here? But does it seem the more Shmups.com grows, the more it loses its focus? Seriously, we never had any "Not Safe For Work" type bullshit going on here before.

Shmups.com was like a 2D game back then... now its becoming a 3D FPS by EA-Games.

I say one of the new stickies we need is a clear-cut set of rules like we used to have, since now it seems mods are just dictating policy as they see fit...

Gradius III on snes is awesome despite the slowdown, and I find the PS2 revision to be satisfactory as well.

Highlander is the worst movie ever made, and I enjoy corn nuts.

Sorry, the tension needed cut.

I think if you have the ability to look at boobs, or boob-like things while at work, more power to you. If you don't have that ability, and do it anyway, you are a moron.

I like this forum. I like how most anything can be discussed. I also like a lot of members on this forum. Someone could misconstrue my last statement to be perverse as well.

Like I said, the tension needed cut. Now, back on-topic.

It SHOULD resolve a lot of the posts, but never has. having stickies right at the top of the page that allow further comment would not just resolve the problem but allow for more conversation--since clearly we DO enjoy talking about those things.

I one time got modded because I disagreed with a particular moderator and expressed it very vehemently.

Since then, my faith in the overall good of moderation has been destoryed. Get rid of it all!

You're not out of line at all. I wasn't here in the VERY beginning but I was here early enough to notice a discernable difference between then and now. I think the mods are trying to please everything in the universe and it would seem that in time the forums will become neutered into yet another platform of overly political correctness.

Like many other have pointed out - forums, when not filled with idiot, immature children (which this forum isn't) are largely self-policing. And granted there may be a few minors on here, but the largest audience are NOT minors (remember the poll on the old forum about the age of posters?).

Bottom line - I think people should be free to discuss as they will, and if there is a serious problem which isn't correcting itself...then moderation is a viable option; but since most problems fix themselves...well...there you go.

I can't get myself worked up over the "sexy shmup chicks" issue, since it's just a matter of clicking on an extra URL and that's not a big deal to me. On the other hand, if you're clicking on a thread with a title like that at work, you ought to know it isn't work safe.

Other than that, I agree with TWITCHDOCTOR. I am VERY much against making this place PG-13. We're mostly adults here, why censor 98% of us for the benefit of the other 2%? Personally, I swear very little IRL. Just about the only time I do swear is when I'm playing shmups. Swearing is an integral part of struggling through these frustrating games. I haven't noticed any serious censorship here as far as language goes yet, so let's just keep it that way.

I 2nd that. Christopher Lambert is one of the most bland, lifeless actors on the planet. He has almost no personality on screen. The only exception to that I know of is Highlander: End Game, where his character is somewhat jaded from the years of being hunted by other immortals. He actually had a little spark in that performance.

I really don't get this. Why don't you just say 'hey guys, just don't do any embedded images at all'? If we're at the point where someone has to think 'gee, this _official_ Ibara promotional poster pic, should I embed it or not?', things are way too complicated and arbitrary. I mean, that picture is 100% ON TOPIC to this forum. Many people would consider it completely safe for work too, some may not. If the "goal" here is 'worksafe', then just don't do embedded images, period. Remove any ambiguity.

Really, if your goal here is to draw more users or whatever, moderating for 'worksafeness' is really fruitless towards that goal. How many people do you think are out there that go 'gee, I'd visit shmups.com more, but they have boobies in the forums every so often! oh well!"??! If you want more users, you need more USEFUL CONTENT. If someone is making an active decision to not come here, they're doing it because they don't feel the expense of their time brings them any value, or the subject matter just holds no interest to them. Want more users? More content. Maybe some 'how to get into this genre/hobby' intro articles, FAQs, lists of interesting external links/sites about these games, all that stuff. Moderating for worksafeness? Eh, useful at times, but not so much in this case, as long as things are not getting out of hand (i.e threads of just random porn, or something like that).

I can't wait to see the list of rules.

I think this is the only board I visit where there are so few browsing options available (in "profile"). Like to show images, signatures, etc. I've seen those options on other phpBB forums. It also makes browsing much faster, cutting down on post size and loading times.

I agree with that too. Its really not necessary to have poster sized avatars and sigs the size of bumper stickers...it really does bog the place down.
My main concerns are that this site is becoming "censored". I oppose censorship.
This place never was censored before and there were really no problems.
If someone got out of line , they were asked to straighten up, if they didn't comply, they were banned...simple!

The only other time we had a problem with censorship is back when Akira changed all entries with "FPS" (first person shooter) to "FPShite".
This was only a joke (I think), but it backfired! I took it as a joke, and I do like FPS, but some were offended and they had a good reason to be.
Anyway, I remember at least 1 member leaving because of it.

I've always liked Shmups.com because it set itself appart from most other internet forums. Even though, it was on the internet, it still felt different. There were no worries of things being "worksafe", there were no concerns about porn, but if someone decided to talk about it, they were free to do so. Nobody was worried about offending parents of "wee little" kiddies either.
I guess back when Shmups was "in focus" there was no room for any of that other common internet bullshit found elswhere, becuase it never once got outa hand over here.

I can only imagine if ThunderForce was a mod back when Raymond Mckeithen the III and MasterBaiter were around...TF would have to quit his day job to become a full time MOD here!!!

No censorship! Please. If someone has something to say, I WANT to be the one to choose, if I should read it or not.

Also, going back about that one members "pre-ejaculation" comment in the Hot Shmup Chicks thread. It didn't really offend me, although it was pretty much a goofy thing to say.
How would one draw a line from that, and say allow a similar type topic in the "Jokes" thread? Or would "dirty" jokes simply not be allowed, or would they too, be censored.

If you want to discuss 2D shooters, then talk about it in shmups chat. If you want to post fan/babe art, then put it in OT. Is your free speech REALLY being surpressed if you have to link a picture URL instead? Call me old fashioned but if I had a son or daughter who was a shmup fan, I wouldn't want them reading "I just shot cum all over my keyboard" after they clicked on what appeared to be a normal fanart thread. We are just trying to enforce a standard which we hope will encourage more *mature* discussion on the forums, especially the shmups chat board. It doesn't seem like too much to ask. This has already been discussed with all the admins and mods as a group and we came to an agreement.

And to Andi, I'm sorry about the time I overreacted to your sarcasm/humor. I really mean that.

Some of you people are just too prude (prudish).

EVERY kid has sometimes seen a boob or more.
There's nothing wrong with a boob per sé. It would be something else if the girl/guy is depicted in sexual activity or something. But what the hell is wrong with a boob or even a "penis" or "vagina"? We all have at least one of both (please note: at least!).
The moderated pics don't show nothing at all, and if I would look at those at work nobody would even look up (In fact if they were REAL porn my boss would probably come watch it with me).
The picture shows "skin" nothing more, so what the fuck is wrong with that even for a 10 year old.
Are we only allowed to post pics of a "hot shmup" chick if she's wearing a burka?

I truly opose any censorship in any way.
I can live with the "embedded link" solution as it it's not really censorship imho.

As long as people aren't calling each other names it's all fine with me.

The mods here are doing a pretty good job imo , and it's only occasionally that I wonder "Why"?
So I say keep up the good work, and if in doubt debate about it among the few of you.

I'm pro common sense censorship.

Most of the stuff that needs censoring is childish crap anyway.
