I'm in the camp that prefers Fallout to Fallout 2.

Fountain of Dreams was a real letdown, though at the same time Wasteland is so good I don't think anything would have been a worthy follow-up.

A remake of Wasteland for the DS was actually announced at one point but random cockblockery with regards to who owns it/who owns the code/who owns the name/etc. stopped it from happening. :/

That blows my mind. Although, I'm not entirely sure I believe that any company was actually series about doing it - it's a pretty amazing thought. Who would dream that Wasteland would be resurrected...and on the DS of all systems?

I'd recommend Baldur's Gate II. Everything DirtyMonk said about them is true. While BG1 is a great game and I enjoyed it, after playing BG2 I kind of wished I hadn't. Knowing the story was cool, but I didn't even want to carry over my old character because they have really cool new classes in BG2 and I wanted to use one of those. Be sure to get Throne of Bhaal, too.

Here's why BG1 pales in comparison to BG2:

1. You can run BG2 in resolutions up to 1024x768, which is really nice.

2. 90% of BG1 is walking through forests with almost no distinguishable characteristics. The other 10% is mines/caves. In BG2, you will visit many more towns, villages, and cities, all more fleshed-out and interesting than BG1's, along with much more interesting and varied dungeons.

3. You'll finish BG1 at about...level 10. Not sure exactly because it's been awhile, but you're gonna be pretty low level. So basically you'll use a lot of arrows/slingshots to avoid damage, and your mages will use only haste, magic missle, and fireball. Very tame and boring. In BG2/TOB, you'll end up level 25~40. You will get so much more fun/powerful stuff comapred to BG1 it's not even funny. Seriously, there is some absurdy broken stuff in BG2, but it's also balanced in that it'll get used against you as well. It's like comparing Galaga to DDP DOJ if that helps any. :)

I'd also recommend Planespace: Torment, but only for storyline, dialouge, and characters. The combat system is bunk, honestly. Also some people don't like the setting (very bleak and depressing), though some will love it. If all you expect out of the game is a great story, you will be blown the fuck away. But if you're wanting to mess around with battles/quests and non-linear stuff, play BG2. I hate it when people get turned off by Planescape due to the battle system or environment, and never pick up the game again, beacause the story really is that good.
