MAME either works or it doesn't. If you got a screen of "distorted graphics" you probably saw the BIOS startup screen (the same thing happens on real NeoGeo hardware). MAME is a hardware emulator, not a game emulator (games are just a neat side effect of emulating hardware). When you start up a game, give it a minute to get past all the self-test stuff.
And if it *still* doesn't work, then you hav ethe wrong version of the ROMs. MAME updates regularly and improves on code in each release. Back in the mid 0.90 releases it was discovered that all NeoGeo dumps (including the bioses) were incorrect due to a small copy protection routine, and needed redumping. As such, the entire list of ROMs needed updating. If you have old ROMs, you need to check them. You can use tools like ClrMAMEPro to do this:
Try Darius Twin too. The sense of solitude it gives is immense
Also if you're into that, Macroos Ai Oboeteimasuka on both Saturn/SNES are the way to go. Even though if you can emulate you will be able to try quite everything and decide by yourself.
Or get an amiga and kneel before apidya, agony and project X - the amiga-only horizontal royal triad of awesomeness
Storm of Progear, Gate of Thunder (TGCD/PCE), Air Zonk (TG16/PCE), Thunderforce 2 (Genny), Salamander (Sat DX pack or the affordable PCE Hucard) are some greats that come to mind.
