I do not like video games.
They had some ideas, but then they ran out. Currently they're trying to distract us with a tv strapped to the face and cardboard to distract us from the fact we're not living The Matrix already.

Is it wrong that I also feel this way about movies and comics?KAI wrote:

There might not be any accounting for taste, but collecting Funko Pop figures is certainly a sign that you might no't have any.WelshMegalodon wrote: And can we stop pretending "gamer culture" is an actual thing instead of something corporations invented to sell us Funko Pop figures?
Isn't Cosmic Fantasy 2 an RPG?Steamflogger Boss wrote:They're a PC genre first and foremost, so consoles aren't the best place to look, but I know there's Cosmic Fantasy 2 on the PC Engine, Star Cruiser on the Mega Drive, Rise of the Dragon on the Mega-CD, and Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken on the Famicom.
On a side-note, it always bothers me that people refer to Japanese AVGs (such as Snatcher and Famicom Detective Club) as VNs when they're not really interchangeable genres.
Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
I guess Dead of the Brain for PC98 is still up in the air. I thought the project was dead and started working on my own half-assed translation with my half-assed friend who was doing the hacking, but it seems back up again. We need more of these.
*And edit* But I think Nana's dead . I stumbled upon his patreon sometime last year and his last post was 2016. Had a lot of good stuff planned. I guess I don't fault people for not following through with these; a lot of work for a very small fanbase.

So it is! Star Cruiser is an RPG, too. My bad.Jonny2x4 wrote:Isn't Cosmic Fantasy 2 an RPG?
There is some genre overlap in titles like Sakura no Kisetsu. I don't think Steamflogger is looking for VNs, though. (It would be much easier to recommend titles if he were.)Jonny2x4 wrote:On a side-note, it always bothers me that people refer to Japanese AVGs (such as Snatcher and Famicom Detective Club) as VNs when they're not really interchangeable genres.

Sadly not. I think he finally managed to pull part of the first disk, but since we're both idiots and completely new to this stuff we couldn't get the files to read correctly.

Yeah I figured as much, I knew certainly it's a PC genre in the west (as I've played basically all the US classics).WelshMegalodon wrote:They're a PC genre first and foremost, so consoles aren't the best place to look, but I know there's Cosmic Fantasy 2 on the PC Engine, Star Cruiser on the Mega Drive, Rise of the Dragon on the Mega-CD, and Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken on the Famicom.
I have actually played Rise of the Dragon (though I believe this is a US game actually). It was medium minus imo.
It is. I played it a fair bit through, something happened with my save data so I never bothered to finish. It was pretty rough around the edges.Jonny2x4 wrote:

Famicom Detective Club looks interesting.
Fan translations are an intense labor of love. Hoping some of the planned PCE ones go through but I know the guys involved are really busy.drauch wrote:I guess Dead of the Brain for PC98 is still up in the air. Monopoly is the best game ever.

I just mad that TV Tropes has Snatcher and Policenauts classified as Visual Novels. It's obvious whoever made the move is one of those people who think that every Japanese AVG is a VN.WelshMegalodon wrote: don't think Steamflogger is looking for VNs, though. Correct, looking for proper adventure games only. I know for example the PCE is loaded with VNs/Digital Comics.WelshMegalodon wrote: There is some genre overlap in titles like Sakura no Kisetsu. What distinguishes something like Snatcher from a VN? Not arguing, I'm just ignorant of both genresJonny2x4 wrote:I just mad that TV Tropes has Snatcher and Policenauts classified as Visual Novels. Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
So it's a fairly thin line since there are people that just lump them together. Imo VNs have very little actual interaction. I would say for example a lot of the games released by Telltale are closer to VNs than classic adventure games are. Whereas in an adventure game you have to solve puzzles, figure out what to do in general, more actual gameplay basically. A recent example of what I would call a full adventure game series would be Deponia.
Hope that helps.

Re: post here if YOU LIek VIDEO GAMES!!!!!!
I always liked the straightforward nature of Quest for Glory. The idea of having convoluted "puzzles" just to have them always made these things worse. When you have a game that encourages trying to jam every object in your inventory into every object on the screen - that's a failure of design.
Where's the "adventure" if you're just a rat running down a tunnel, with no freedom at all?
Those were some halcyon days when this genre was king on PC. Back when nerds were the only ones who owned computers. Appealing to the masses ruins everything. Humor is always one of the first things to go - since god knows nobody agrees on that.
Darkseed is such a memorable kusoge. The developer - writer, lead actor, designer - had the main character be a Mary Sue version of himself. (They literally have the same first and last names.) They got HR Giger to license out some of his art to them. In the sequel, the dev was a different guy and he made the game in a kind of way that mocked the protagonist. The infamous, rigged unwinnable carnival games. All of it culminating in the ring toss game.
This kind of stuff is actually memorable.
Which is the entire point of the Landlord's game. It was made by a socialist named Liz to make people stop awhile and think about the evils of rents, after all.
When played by the actual rules (auctions are held if the person landing on a property doesn't buy it) and ending the game when the first person goes bankrupt (the "winner" is the person with the most money, including their assets) it is actually kind of enjoyable. But who wants that?

I love getting people to play it whenever there's awkward dead time. Invariably they play it in a manner that makes everyone bicker, argue, and miserable.lilmanjs wrote:Monopoly is the best game ever.
