It's not for reasons explained above by both me and ross. Basically because of the low build quality not on par with the rest of the other versions and incorrect screen resolution of 800x240 for games displaying in 400x240.

The only way to get a proper 2D output for 3DS games would be with the 2DS, the New 2DS XL fails on all front.
My fault for not being specific I guess, but let me rephrase the sentence you quoted:

but if you don't want to enable 3D and want large screens, "New" features or a clamshell design to protect your screen I think it's the best choice.

The New 2DS XL doesn't fail on that front. You can repeat as many times you want that the 2DS display is more correct, it doesn't change that there are other factors people should consider.

As for build quality, that's a bad term to throw around without being a whole lot more specific.

Not sure what the point would be since the New 3DS XL does both 3D and 2D, you are acting like if only the New 2DS XL can do 2D. The New 2DS XL is basically a gimped New 3DS XL with disabled 3D functions as Nintendo didn't bother to make a specific 400x240 screen for the New 2DS XL as they should have, but instead plastered a New 3DS XL screen on a lower grade plastic shell while stripping away it's 3D capabilities and called it the "New 2DS XL". The resulting picture is the exact same thing as you get on a New 3DS XL in 2D mode, meaning a 400x240 output displaying at a non-native resolution of 800x240 resulting in a inferior picture quality, while on the New 3DS XL you have both options of 2D and 3D and in 3D mode the games will display in native 400x240.

I've already said why I'm recommending the 2DS XL over the 3DS XL (again, for people who don't care about 3D or speaker quality):

When viewed from the front like when you're playing as a normal human would the difference between TN and IPS are minimal. Trust me, all these angled comparison shots are so ridiculous.

Yeah they only matter with screens viewed at a distance.

This whole thread's min/maxxing is so exhausting. Especially the black-and-white ranking nonsense.

So, simply put, the DSi XL screen is the best?

Define "best". Best is a subjective term.

I think the original DS screen is best for faithfulness, at least for earlier titles and GBA.

Yeah, this is something I forgot to mention. A lot of DS games and very late GBA games were probably designed with the original DS screens in mind. So the image on the original DS screen may be what the developers intended. It should also be noted that the original DS screen has less ghosting than the DS Lite (or at least appears to) https://youtu.be/BjtD1mOZlPc?t=10m14s

I have a soft spot for the original DS since that is the first model I had and played on it for many years. The D-Pad is great, the image quality seemed pretty good to me, the ability to play GBA cartridges and have them enchance / communicate with DS games and the ability turn off the backlight are all nice advantages.

All I want is the DS (preferably the ones before the 3DS) that has the brighest, most vibrant, and least ghosting screen.

You'll want the DSi XL.

The dsi has a great screen too.

Phat sucks stay away

DSi XL's pixel density is way too low for screens that big, not to mention it's a behemoth and heavy. (I feel like someone should really weigh a DSi XL vs N3DS XL lol. My memory is really colored here. It's been about 8 years since I owned an XL and didn't enjoy it)
If you want something this size, just get a new3DS XL and play DS games in 1:1 pixel mode which gets you screen size very similar to a Lite/Phat in physical dimensions.
Feels like this is the best compromise for overall compatibility.

I would go Dsi standard personally if you don't want a 3DSXL.

Personally if not for the terrible viewing angles and gamma shift along with an unfortunately grainy screen surface finish. I would recommend Phat to everyone.
The brightness is not really an issue(If you get a Japanese Grey/black model and use an R4 cart you can increase the brightness of the screen.), colors not really (As no model is going to have accurate color. Everything changes unit to unit) and it has the least intrusive motion blur. Even though there is still plenty.

Faulty memory there, the DSi XL isn't significantly larger or heavier than the New 3DS XL. Don't have to weigh or measure them, just Google for their specifications.
