I dunno what you consider cheap. My colorimeter (colormunki display) was like 80usd used on eBay and I've calibrated about a dozen screens with it, HCFR(free), and my old laptop.
The brightness setting controls blacks and the contrast setting controls whites. Just moving them around without a gage can affect your color range negatively.
If you do plan on tweaking them, write down any and all settings first before you adjust them so you can go back. I made this mistake once on my 14L5 and couldn't get it to look proper until I bought the colorimeter.
This is a little different with LCDs because you can often adjust the backlight setting which directly affects the light output on the screen rather than black and white colors.
Thanks - come to think of it might be time to stop being lazy and learn calibration. I've been putting it off for ages - I'll pick up one of those Colormunki display units at some point soon & give it a shot.
