Here it goes again, the same hype as with the Mini NES and Nintendo canßt deliver enough consoles...

I doubt it. The distributor scalped most of the NES Mini controllers. The SNES mini includes two controllers, possibly to avoid a repeat of that situation.

PC Engine Fan X! wrote:I don't know why it was easier for me to get a Nintendo Switch console than it was trying to get a Nintendo NES Classic Edition console
Because the Switch is their core money engine. The more they sell, the more software they sell, the more 3rd party support they get, the better off they'll be 5 years from now.

The Emu Box is the inverse of that. It's a toy whose demand can quickly be dried out. The more they sell, the less it's worth. In all likelihood, they'll offer one every year with a slightly different roster of games. So even people who've bought the old version might want the new one.

It's an evil, insidious plan to control supply and print money forever. Beanie babies and blood diamonds all over again.
What exactly is "half-baked" about it?
It's more for casuals and collectors. The more dedicated types already have an SNES or a more robust and accurate Emu Box.

Thanks for the link.

Isn't this a classic example of building a fluff piece out of nothing, though? I mean, it's more than obvious that if a number of games ran on bolstered hardware, you're gonna have to emulate the whole setup or the games flat-out won't run. Nintendo do need to issue a working product here.

I like Eurogamer and particularly enjoy the in-depth DF stuff, but this particular article shouldn't even have been written.

Absolutely.
In a sense, the SNES mini is much more than a console emulator then - it has to provide accurate representations of at least four other processors not found in the original console
So basically: Like every other emulator out there. Super Nintendo emulation has kind of been around for a while. And even the NES mini also had to emulate hardware on the various carts of the games it provided. Even if mapper chips are obviously a lot more simple than coprocessors.

I want this for good ergonomic controllers, pleasing interface, better HD display, and modding potential in a package that can outdo a raspberry pi setup.

What is the best catch-all site, feed, or account to announce preorders?

Very important detail for the European package:
"It’s worth noting that buyers of a European model SNES Classic Mini won’t get an AC adapter included in the box. You’ll need to plug the supplied USB cable into an adapter like you probably already use to charge your mobile phone."

In Europe the NES Classic didnt have an AC adapter either. I dont think its that important seeing as everyone I know has a usb port on their television, its not as bad as selling a product like the 3ds without one when charging the device is essential.

Well powering a device is kind of essential too. If you can supply a USB cable you can surely supply a plug for it?

Still, you can get explosive knock-offs for 50p from your local market so stop complaining yeah?

Yeah, while it's not strictly mutually exclusive, I definitely prefer that solution to adding more propriety standards with impossible-to-find PSUs.

Oh no no, you need to get the OFFICIAL plug for the low, low price of £7.99 before postage!

Clearly Nintendo have brainwashed me well enough that I no longer expect these accessories as standard...

Why does anyone even bother with these glorified emulation boxes? If it's hardware you're after get a Snes and a flash cart like the super everdrive or just stick to emulation.

Casuals. And collectors.

You can't possibly underestimate the number of computer illiterate people there are in the world. We're the freaks, not the norm. You say "flashcart", you might as well ask them to build a rocket to reach the moon.

This thing is bringing brand new SNES controllers and Starfox 2 into the world. That's at least something for the hardcore.

I'd say those are technically Wii controllers. There are people making new actual SNES controllers though.

Exactly, two new controllers that I can hook up to a raphnet wii to usb adapter and use with Higan is 99% of why I put a pre-order in. I dont know anywhere you can buy new official in box controllers for that price.

HDMI tech without need of a separate scaler purchase; also an appealing quick-boot interface and an appealing shell.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah. For the living room with normies, not the gaming-cave studio.

It's like buying a coffee table art book, but it is electronic and know you'll need to mod it, and 4/5 of the work is already done.

while i can appreciate the appeal of this thing and certainly believe it's worth the $80 asking price, i think you may be getting a bit ahead of yourself. mark my words, there's absolutely not a snowball's chance in hell it will have any of the following advantages over an rpi3 setup for roughly the same price:
more accurate emulation
better sound quality (in fact, it'll most likely be noticeably worse)
better screen filter options
less input input lag
a significantly better controller than what either buffalo or 8bitdo currently makes

i'll give you the interface will be slicker, but if you're tech savvy and have enough free time you can setup attractmode or emulation-station to be pretty damn slick too

you can also get a gorgeous snes shell case that (at least from the pictures) looks like it can rival the snes classic's one from here, however it sells for a ridiculously high price of $150..

I'm willing to gut it for rpi3 if this stock solution sucks. What emulator does all that stuff you said? RetroPie? Install it over Raspbian or do the stand-alone image if I want attractmode, emulation-station, whatever the hot new Hyperspin is nowadays?

If Megaman 7 mega buster still sounds like dogshit or mario 1 clockspeed stutters occasionally, I will be sad again. I'd like to eliminate observing years of screen-tearing using shmupmame on a 3.2gh WinXP with custom MaLa frontend. I'd like the system bootup to remain stable over a decade this time.

Thank you for links and namedrops.

From a casual standpoint, this looks a lot better than the NES one.

There was no way to do a proper NES/FC/FDS lineup, not even by doubling the amount of titles offered.

With the SNES on the other hand, they pretty much nailed it. 4$ per game, and very few duds among them.

Only minor gripe is that Mana is a three players game, so they're offering a compromised experience (although, yeah... Chrono Trigger would have been just another turn-based title I guess).

What's the quality of emulation, I wonder?

p.s. also, I can't believe how shockingly better is our lineup compared to what the Japanese are getting. With all my respects to Goemon, of course.

Goemon would have actually meant one game that I don't already have. :P

Emulation is probably gonna be a little shoddy, like on the NES one, but likely not much worse than all the existing Virtual Console games, which all run quite fine.

Heh, remember when in 2003 Nintendo had the balls to celebrate the Famicom's 20th anniversary with the Famicom Mini GBA lineup, and each title was sold individually... And emulation was an issue there too, not to mention the forced 16:9 aspect ratio.

Oh god I remember seeing those fuckin' things at the BX. ~30 bux for goddamn Super Mario Brothers, it was like asking money for the privilege of eating dogshit. We already have enough copies of SMB+Duck Hunt to build a coffee table, and that came with the bonus of Duck Hunt.

To go from Mario All-Stars > Super Mario DX > Classic NES Series: Super Mario Brothers over the years, to pay so much more and get so much less; truly the golden showers age of Nintendo. That release series brings to mind an exaggerated version of Jim's rant that Balloon Fight isn't worth $2.

They could have expanded the old game over time if they wanted to keep up SMB1's franchise value. New levels, new monsters, new powerups, new characters; nope nope nope nope. They could release a new version of SMB every few years like fighting games like to do if they really wanted to go crazy and give fan service, but no Super Mario Brothers Excellent Electric Neon Turbo edition for us.

Wasn't until Mario Maker that they ever even tried to expand and exploit the value of these old assets.
