Sweet, crazy details! You're definitely getting there
Is it zoomed in? The ship and force pod seem a bit too big at the moment...

Thanks everyone.
The ship and force are too big, I reduced them to 80%. Is that better?

Re: I love R-TYPE! Fan Art
Thanks for sharing the video! I like the mini boss guy too. Pretty cool.
I assume you had invincibility turned on for testing/capturing video?
Also, as far as "ship too big", I would simply take your screen, and overlay on to a similar level 1 R-Type screen capture and check and see *for certain*.
I mean you've already come this far, in terms of matching the originals designs, might as well get the size exactly right! (Off the cuff, I'm definitely happier with the smaller ship too, but I'd check in case it should be even smaller).

Making an action platformer with a transforming grappling hook: ChainStaff. Also made a shmup with multi-ships: Shoot 1UP DX, and more .

This is looking awesome. I hope someday this shows up for sale somewhere. My comment would be that it feels slow motion, especially the bullets.

It'd get slapped down fast for using Irem's designs and IP. No, it would have to be a free fan game, or be reworked into a more original game.rjosal wrote:I hope someday this shows up for sale somewhere.
I do love me some R-Type, so I hope the project continues. I do agree with the slowness, things could stand to move at a bit more brisker pace.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I just don't want it to suffer the same fate as the Chrono Trigger fan game.

Re: I love R-TYPE! Fan Art
Scale is matching RTYPE but the aspect ratio being so different it's more of eyeballing to get the right feeling, methink.
Chrono Trigger was unfortunate and the difficulty is in reskinning what they've already done to steer clear from all that - but from what I *just* researched, Irem is no Square Enix.
For one they never sued any of the gazilion clones made in the 90s. Square poops lawsuit 3x a day (healthy bowel movement). Also IREM doesn't do video games anymore, they lost so much money that they got dissolved into a maker of digital Pachinko machine (the addictive random ball game they love so much over there) using their mother company's uber excellent LCD panels for that.
All that to say that I think the risk would be minimal based on who they seem to be, and it'd take me a couple of days to redesign away from the RTYPE cues. Also it would be fun to shoot from the hip in a business that is so scared of everything. But you guys inspired a new approach - I think it'd be more fun if this project could use the real name RTYPE
For that I need their blessings so I left a message on their web site asking for their CEO email. It's not as easy as contacting a Startup in the bay area. No reply so far, I'll call next week but my Japanese is zero.
Maybe one of you knows someone who knows someone at IREM? Or the original team members?
On another Note, who likes missiles?

Or release a "turn it into R-Type"-patch separate from the game...it'd take me a couple of days to redesign away from the RTYPE cues.
Maybe it'd be worth a shot to contact TOZAI Games, the people behind R-Type Dimensions for a proper remake?

Btw, missiles look great, love the light on the smoke trail!

I like that! In the meantime this game needs a new name... Das Grind Machine!Necronom wrote:Or release a "turn it into R-Type"-patch separate from the game
Today I made a shader to get that nice glowing glass look that's so RTYPE and now the cockpit and the force look like this:

Deadliar, Hacking & Capture pod now working.
When attached to the ship you can hacks and capture N enemies until their total capture cost >> capture capacity. Each enemy has a capture cost so if you want to grab a boss you need an empty katamari
Close in on that flying missile launcher to capture it

done, and now turning enemy missiles against their bretheren MWAHAHA!

at full capacity.

Interesting mechanic! I imagine it could be difficult to balance...
Though cost vs capacity should prevent players from building overpowered frankenstein ships a la tumiki fighters
Will the captured ships come with a timelimit or do you plan them to have hitpoints?

Can you put the R-Type name (add to the bottom). I wouldn't mind framing this.laurentopia wrote:Thanks everyone.

This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

Right now, to avoid mindless frankesteining like tumiki I have two mechanisms in place:Necronom wrote:Interesting mechanic! I imagine it could be difficult to balance...

1- each enemy has N capture point and the rig has a limited slot # as well as total capture point so a small canon is 1 CP, the big mech missile walker is 5
2- it takes 1 second per capture point to hack the enemy, I could paralyze the enemy and I'm thinking of making that progressive hacking work only when you're not shooting, I don't want it to be a total pain to use but there need to be some weight to each choice.
As for the total # of slots and capture point, I may set up a system where you get wreckage from enemies and at the end of each level you can chose where you allocate those. I know it's a bit too app store-y but most games are like that anyway (they call that RPG or something) in fact I find making long term choices and winning for the goal of turning into an OP beast quite enjoyable.
Haha, someone seems to be have beat me to it (ahem)neorichieb1971 wrote: Can you put the R-Type name (add to the bottom). I wouldn't mind framing this.

laurentopia, just curious what are you using to make this? Unity? It looks really awesome though!

Re: I love R-TYPE! Fan Art
Why didn't you like Final?
I admit it's rather underwhelming in some areas, with a painfully unmemorable soundtrack and some pretty bland graphics.
But it's just so much fun to unlock all the ships. There aren't many stages but there sure are tons of ways to play each one.

Yes exactly you nailed it, and also the level design was god awful, it felt like early procedural levels, you know, with the same blocks over and over, no memorable zone like you had in level 1 of rtype 1, and very poor pacing.
Definitely you can tell when a C team works on the rtype series.
And the ship unlock felt more like a grind with too many ships being too similar.
