I really dislike metal (as a musical genre, i don't even remotely take in consideration any other aspect) speaking of the thread's subject, but i think that Night Raid's soundtrack is ace. In this regard, i would like to play something gory and gothic, shmups-wise, it would be very interesting. But something fast-paced, or maybe something gritty and industrial...a Gigerian design style would also rock as well.

But i would make it illegal to play for white suburbia kids who want to become elves and dream of chivalric times when they can't run more than 5 minutes

Seconded, both of Portishead's albums are awesome.

As for metal, can't stand the stuff. I have many friends who are into metal, and they're always harping on about how awesome [insert band name] is. But personally, it sounds like a bunch of guys beating the crap out of amplified instruments, making loud screaming noises into microphones, and getting all angsty and whiny about stuff that is of no consequence to anyone. That isn't music to me.

And the makeup sucks.

Trance and techno have been in shmups for quite a while longer than Espgaluda. One notable example is Einhander. There are probably more examples from further back that currently evade my memory.

EDIT: XEXEX is another. That's 1991.

?

Xexex is more like fusion, more or less. Actually, Konami's kukeiha club were more into fusion, except for "Metamorphic force" (which has an heavy-metal soundtrack, and suits fine the game) and other titles as "Aliens". The first dancey OST was Viewpoint, with its early '90s club style. The first famous (and influential) OST that was pure techno/dance was Operation Ragnarok, by Santaruru himself

Heh, fusion. That's what it's called. ^_-
Thanks for clearing that up (it's been bugging me what the OST's genre was).

Ah! I forgot about Viewpoint! Good call ^_^

I'm just posting to say I own about 500 metal cds / lps / tapes, about 120 or so hip-hop ones, about 200-300 harsh noise / IDM / ambient / micro-weird-digital-fuck-up / experimental cds/lps/tapes (including 50+ Merzbow cds), and a small handful of jazz albums.

(yes, I spend as much on music as some of the Arcade Board collectors on this board. easily many thousands of dollars spent over the past 15 years..)

the jazz guys are definitely the best players. Cliche to say, but Buddy Rich could easily outplay anyone in Cynic.

considernig that Cynic has been cited for metal, I feel I should recommend a few hip-hop albums for the musicologically curious:

Dr. Octagon - Dr. Octagonacologyst
(metal trivia Pro-Tip: on this album, Kool Keith raps something to the effect of "we all hang with tickets for Gorefest, Autopsy, Def Leppard and Spazz , come on drop the jazz")
Deltron3030
Blackalicious - A2G ep
(features a track of all alliterative rapping, where there are 2 lines dedicated to each letter of the alphabet. "Zigzag zombies zooming to the zenith!" Incredible production as well.)
Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep (or in europe "Niggamortis")
(Excellent "Horrorcore" album from the Rza, Prince Paul [de la soul producer], and two others. The production is loose and nasty and the vocals are great. "Bang your motherfucking head!")

and finally a classic album that has an incredible, dense production, and a nicely used Slayer sample:
Public Enemy - It Takes A Nation of Millions To Hold Us Back
Warning! The Tuna Sashimi Is Approaching At Full Throttle! Be Appetite For Gains!

All good recommendations, but I really would recommend Deltron 3030 as a starting point. The album is geeky enough to appeal to most people here. ;)

Hence my approval of Tool... they don't suck in any way at all :P Brilliant songs AND lyrics... but progressive enough to ensure that the more active minds don't get bored silly.

HAHA! I didn't know that was the European name for that album. That blows my mind!

Those are fantastic selections, Ataru. Each one is essential listening.

I would also add:

Automator - A Much Better Tomorrow
Handsome Boy Modeling School - So, How's Your Girl?

Oh, and for some old(ish) school goodness:

Gang Starr - Daily Operation

Del is definitely very nerdy. I can't remember what album it's on but he has some song called "Protoculture" where he basically raps about his Saturn and Dreamcast.

Shameless self promotion !

Anyone that listens to metal and thinks rap sucks should listen to Necro or Ill Bill. Both are littered with references to metal and Necro has a ton of guests from metal bands on his newest album (Donald Tardy, Danny Lilker, Away from Voivod).
Feedback will set you free.
