The PCE CD, Mega CD, and Neo Geo CD all have 1x speed drives. While this is a problem with the latter, data chunks on PCE are small enough to where loading times are minimal. Modern PC optical drives usually can't burn slower than 8x, but I think I read somewhere that you can force it slower with some firmware fuckery. I've also heard that some blank media work better than others.

They have yet to be mentioned, but two of the best cute-em-ups ever made are on PCE - Coryoon and Star Parodia.

You do mention the stunningly mediocre Coryoon (honestly, there's nothing to it from a gameplay perspective) yet don't bring up the lovely Hana Tahka Daka!? For shame, for shame.

You must have a very old burner... It's important to match the burn speed with burner and media. A new burner with modern discs require a faster burn speed to be reliable. It has nothing to do with the speed of the reading drive. Note that audio CD players run at original (1x) speed.

To be fair, some of this knowledge might be significantly outdated - perhaps slower burn speeds were more necessary 8 years ago? At the very least, I used lower burn speeds on ImgBurn on my brand-new assembled computer, with no problems for performance afterwards.
