Re: Liquor and Shmups?
I won two public STG tournaments hammered on a rum flask and Arrogant Bastard Ale.
One of the games was Blazing Lazers and I knew of an infinite scoring exploit, so I balanced my flask on the shot button and walked away from the competition table to laugh at people. I was almost disqualified.

Lately I've been beering and wineing while shmupping.
I think the optimal point lies somewhere at the end of the second and the beginning of the third cup/glass

To the rest of you, who can not operate optimally while "under load", I would say you definitely got a drinking problem there.
Fucking amateurs.
Oh, and Merry Christmas

Try a hippy speedball (coffee and weed at the same time).
We've had discussions in the past about alcohol, I think the general consensus is there is a happy zone with very minimal drinking but it's very difficult to keep it there.

Just to corroborate the general consensus, I find a being just a smidge high or a smidge tipsy can improve my playing. Mostly it's because a little inebriation calms your nerves and makes you less likely to mess up due to tenseness. I remember my first 1cc of Blue Wish Resurrection was under the influence of just a little weed.
It's very easy to overdo though. Past that first, zen-mode concentration more intoxicants are just going to make everything much harder. (Weirdly enough, however, I find that if II practice a stage while noticeably drunk or high and do badly, when I come back to it the next day sober I often break my previous records.)

I totally agree with Kollision with the 2-3 guideline. Once I go beyond to the 4-6 range I loose focus and any videogame is not very enjoyable. Trying to play some thing like a FPS or driving game almost gives me motion sickness. Smoking and shooters are a better match though. Something like Ikaruga can be slowed down where bullets appear to go crawling torwards you can be easily avoided like in the Matrix movies. Take something with many cut scenes and a stoy such as Radiant Silvergun and you feel a deep connectuon to what is going on.

Re: Liquor and Shmups?
Horror games are my favorite genre besides shmups. I remember getting a copy of the new Siren game for the PS3 from Japan before it was available in North America. My wife couldn't watch once I got to the point with the little girl in the hospital.cul wrote:One of my best video game memory ever was marathoning Dead Space 1 and 2 for three days straight while smoking weed nonstop. Just to contextualize, I used to not be able to play ANY horror game because I was shitting my pants. I have to say that this experience was mind blowing and made me love horror game to the point that I did
Best genre ever . Silent Hill 2 for life

LOL this thread made me laugh. I agree though, booze is fine unless I have had more than three beers - then I notice a complete inability to dodge even the most simple of bullet pattern. I also find I play better in the morning than night. So if I go for a hi-score (always very low in the big scheme of hi-scores) I try do it in the morning. I think caffeine and nicotine (via vape) are a super good way to go for me. Weed I get too into the colours and the "wonder" of the beautiful world I am in, then get paranoid that all the enemies I am destroying thinking about how they all had families in their far off alien worlds waiting for them to come back. Arghhh that leads to me getting depressed and raiding the fridge for comfort snacks that the Mrs hates me doing...
But, I have recently discovered as a middle aged gamer the wonders of the good port, this is a calming drink that is good to sip without the bite of whisky, seems to be going well with Raiden 2 (a middle aged shmup for sure) which I'm now playing. Perhaps different substances for different games maybe. Beat em ups are pretty good with beer I have found as it brings out the 80's jock in everyone.

Haha. Most of my most difficult accomplishments have been done at night, while my wife is working. It forces me to not rage since she works 10 feet from where I play.
Someone called it a hippy speed ball, and it is one of my favorites too. AlthoughGingerzilla wrote: I think caffeine and nicotine (via vape) are a super good way to go for me. Weed and shooters never ends well from an accomplishment standpoint, so I usually will be a little more creative and try new scoring routes and such.
As for the bolded my friend and I have a theory that Mario is the villian in all the MB games. The people of the mushroom kingdom were just minding their business when this guy from Brooklyn shows up and begins murdering people. Did he ever think that maybe the princess DOESN'T WANT TO BE FOUND AND THAT'S WHY SHE IS ALWAYS IN ANOTHER CASTLE?!
Show me everything you have, puppet of Geppetto.
