Arguable. For narrative heavy games, I believe those big teams often do a lot of paper prototyping and whatnot before they even begin. It's a form of iterative design and testing, which is a long shot from that brand of "let me sit around and write/talk about why my ideas and preferences are BETTER".
As for writing itself, it's not really any different. A good script goes through thousands of rewrites and edits before it can actually be good. Authors spend hours rereading the same sentence over and over to try and make it better, just like game designers do with gameplay. Everything is about that iteration, as far as I can tell. Well, planning is important too. But blog posts aren't planning.

That's why I say that it shouldn't be a discussion about what better game design supposedly is. And some random blog doing so surely is silly. I wouldn't equate it with the whole field though.Squire Grooktook wrote:Arguable. Sure. The very classical/archetypical plot structure for an RPG like Xenoblade for example wasn't just a result of testing and iteration though, I'm sure about that. Good authors and directors know their tools (and are often enough part of the discourse themselves or influence it) and how these work and there surely is a lot of theory involved with this stuff.Squire Grooktook wrote:As for writing itself, it's not really any different. Why did you have to act so mean?
Don't you know you're human being?
Born from a mother with the love from a father

I know sometimes you want to let go

A little soon to declare him dead. He could have just been arrested or something. insomnia.ac still redirects to culture.vg, which is his preferred domain name, I'm sure. That's pretty depressing, he's more likely dead than it being a scam. He put far too much work into his site just to let that domain expire.
Also, icy wouldn't want to rest in peace. He'd rather rest in war, you stupid abortion of a fagot.

Re: Did Icycalm die
I had a friend like that once. I was the bright old age of 20, attending a university in Texas. Having a repertoire of friends that weren't afraid of the occasional indulgence, I got all kinds of wacky stories. One friend decided to get way into something one night and was talking crazy shit. Eventually told me he saw some scars on his wrist one time when he was at the grand canyon. Totally knew he was Jesus. Was able to tell me that... but very few other complete sentences were constructed that night. Weird. He wound up in rehab soon after. His Dad came and made a huge scene the whole apartment complex saw. Fun times.Specineff wrote:^^^ Well, he compared himself to Jesus once, so he may resurrect to spread the Gospel of the Ubermensch.
Anywho, sorry for that tangent...

wowzers - had a friend (or rather a friend of a friend) who was convinced he was The Highlander. Was constantly "proving" his "immortality" until one night drunk he walked off into a lake and drown.GaijinPunch wrote:I had a friend like that once. Guy needed help, wasn't interested in it. Quite sad.

What I find interesting is how it's Austere, of all people, who pooped up to ask this question
Re: Did Icycalm die
Ed, what I find a lot more interesting is how you're still incoherent after all these years. I didn't write the original post but I did just notice that it's a new account. Interesting.

Re: Did Icycalm die
A momentary lapse in attention isn't incoherence. You'll have to forgive that, while I note that you only made your grand reappearance in lockstep with this new account. Indeed, that doesn't do much to alter the basic thrust of my question, which is: What special stake do you have in whether that ass is dead or alive, and why do you care to discuss it with people you pretend to despise?
tl;dr Icy isn't dead, he lives on in people like austere.

That's my point, it's not a one off thing, it's been a persistent pattern with you. Do try and pay attention.Ed Oscuro wrote:A momentary lapse in attention isn't incoherence.
See what I mean? There's words in there, but not really a lot of meaningful statements. I made it no secret that I liked the guy, that his (likely) death is somewhat significant, no?Ed Oscuro wrote:while I note that you only made your grand reappearance in lockstep with this new account. If you want to answer your own post though, search "icycalm dead" in google.

I can't tell who is Icycalm, and which of the sockpuppets are real anymore.
Look, here's where you've gone wrong: My idle speculation on who is the biggest dolt does not imply you have a valid claim on my attention. If you just want to use the Forum as your private blog in issuing hagiographies of your pied piper of psuedophilosophy and petulance, I can respect that. I'm just glowing inside with the thought we'll soon see the back of you again, as would everybody else here.

Is it just me or are forums declining in activity across the board? Can't really attribute that to the social media/reddit cancer either because that's in rapid decline as well. Is there just, cultural decline across the board? Nothing new under the sun?GaijinPunch wrote:Doing as most people do... real life... some games... just not forum'ing so much.
Wait a second, just got up to speed with your forum. Shou found DDP CV a month ago? And it has unique hardware? Jesus. I really better submit my PhD thesis on time so I can get back into stuff that matters. Still, kind of sad there's not nearly as much interesting new stuff being made these days.

Re: Did Icycalm die
My frequency goes in and out. I lost my job and had to get serious about life for a while. I also can't aimlessly post at work any more... I did work longer hours before but a lot of that was b/c I set my own schedule and dicked off some too. Now I'm in an office, so other than peaking in when I need to relax my brain (wish arguments between adults fighting about games) I don't get to come in so much.austere wrote:Is it just me or are forums declining in activity across the board? I think it's a mixture of things. I am only in here and occasionally the market place. Never in shmups chat. Not really playing much. I think the average age here is pretty high, which is good, but it means we lose members regularly. For me between work and chasing pussy on the internet, I didn't have much time.

Re: Did Icycalm die
Sorry to hear that, I can sympathise with that quite a bit. The last 5 years for me have been the most difficult in my life but (probably because of that) the most interesting.GaijinPunch wrote:I lost my job and had to get serious about life for a while
I agree, I think games (and all forms of entertainment in general) are dying, which means the forum populations will get older and people's lives with inevitably reach an impasse and they'll fade away.GaijinPunch wrote:I think the average age here is pretty high, which is good, but it means we lose members regularly.
I hope things turn around for all of us... and for shmups and games in general too. When everything blows over for me, I really wish I can come back and find everyone still around and enjoying what we all used to enjoy, if a little wiser than before. That's why I get a bit bummed about hearing anyone dying/getting killed/getting really sick etc.
