Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
I nearly lost one of my little toes when I was a young'un.
I went out in a local park to do a little swimming. Whether I was allowed to or not, who knows. There was no sign saying it was prohibited, so out I went. After a short time, I found a little covered generator just under the water's surface that powered the little fountain sprayer to keep the water stirred up a little and give the ducks a shower to go under when it was on. I swam over to it, stood up on it, and looked around. I then took one step, and felt a rather nasty bit of pain on my right foot. When I looked down, I saw my little toe hanging at a rather... odd angle. I also saw a ring pattern-like set of stripes where my toe had been sliced, along with bone. Needless to say, I freaked the fuck out.
I got myself to shore, where someone heard me crying and helped me get home. The cause of my injury? A screw coming up from within the generator casing, that had no head, and a REALLY sharp edge on its end. I still have my toe, by the way, and never went to a hospital for it when it all happened.
Other moments? Being hit in the head by a raised swinging bench that was moving due to a strong breeze when I was younger than I was with the toe incident. I walked under it trying to duck, but didn't duck enough. Its one rather sharply-pointed corner hit me on the top of the head, I staggered back and put my hand where I was hit. I called the bench a name, laughed a little, and then brought my hand back... which was completely covered in blood. Not good. I also hit a protruding nail with my knee while I was climbing a fence. It left a hole that went down to my kneecap, which I watched fill with blood.
I know all of that's all tame compared to what others here have seen, but there it is.

I was maybe 14-15 at the time and sleeping over my buddy's house. We were in his kitchen using AOL when we both smelled smoke. We walked into the living room which was in the front of his house and the blinds which were drawn were glowing bright orange. We both pried the blinds open and peeked out to see the house directly across the street engulfed in flames. Not five seconds later a man burst out of the front door on fire and dropped to the ground. Immediately a neighbor was there next to the man, beating the flames out with his jacket. When they loaded him into the ambulance he was completely charred. I later learned his body was 90% burned and he died in the hospital.

I had the opportunity to dispose of a mouse caught in a very sticky glue trap -- it would utter a high-pitched chirp on a consistant basis since it couldn't move and saw that it had did both piss & shit on the trap itself. Took a shovel and bashed it right in (it left a bloodly splattered mess indeed) -- tossed the leftover remains in the trash.Ed Oscuro wrote:And the supposed circle of virtuousness comes around with a highly sensible personal commentary.8BA wrote:And yet in your virtue you still chose to read & participate in it. This thread went from making me feel bad in ways I had forgotten it was possible to feel bad, to suddenly feeling unaccountably lulzy
Some-Mist's cat story reminds me of the time I pulled a mouse out of a glue trap. The mouse lived, but part of its tail didn't. I don't know how much pain it was in, but it did start licking the part of its tail that lost the tip right away. Possibly did fine, but I'll never know.
Saw a huge white cat that was roadkill laying out in the street with it's really long intestines splayed out as well one time -- it was a huge and hefty cat with an estimated 15 to 20 pounds easily (judging from it's initial size).

Oh, that reminds of the time that I saw a big and furry gopher walking around one early morning in the parking lot of my store. Went back inside to fetch a shovel and proceeded to smash it but missed. It would bare it's long and wicked teeth at me when I missed. It scampered off to safety. But rodents on the other hand, they're not to be taken lightly these days. Never seen anything gruesome but I was lying next to a patient in hospital the night before his leg was being amputated since a bus ran over it. He was a big football fan and he told me lots about himself and how having his leg gone is going to destroy him. It almost destroyed him to talk about it. I have a bit of an imagination so between his leg, the bus and the story of his life it made me feel numb inside.
Luckily i've been spared of IRL experiences.

Yeah, I can get behind that. Most days I try to take a moment to appreciate my eyes & ability to see. I wouldn't be so devastated by losing a limb, but I can understand how someone would. For me, it's the eyes. Being blind would suck.

Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
I was told I looked like I was ready to die when I got ran over last year on my bike. I never got to see how I looked after the accident, but from the reaction of the lady who ended up calling 911 had, I had to be pretty bad. Lots of blood loss into my stomach and a tooth gone, and one broken in half alongside the one next to that being chipped enough to get it capped as well. Not crazy bad, but I'm sure I lost a good bit of blood. Spent most of the night upchucking the stuff. Luckily I looked worse than I got. Fractures in several spots but that was it. I'm sure I probably looked like I was nearly dead laying on the ground sleeping. My body has a tendency to make injuries look 5 times as worse than they really are. Only halfway gruesome thing I've seen aside from myself, was a man get ran over by a train and die. I couldn't figure out why with a green light the train was hard on the brakes. Not hard when I found out on the news he had ran a guy over who had happened to be walking down the train tracks. Idiot that dude was.

Re: What's the most gruesome thing you've ever seen irl?
The second most gruesome thing is actually worse than the first, but since it wasn't to a person I'll tell you the second. When I was 13 (I think) my school bus ran over a big dog AFTER it dropped myself and 2 neighbors off. Big dog that still lived well temporarily there's no way it could live. Anyway, don't read any further.
Steam was coming out of its body. The bus just kept right on going. I wasn't the first one to see it and it traumatized all of us. I didn't want to deal with it, but I was the oldest and the male out of the 3 of us. No parents were home, we didn't live in a populated area. We still called the cops. The officer gave me a pat on the back and said I did what I had to and I did the right thing.
We didn't even know the dog. Never seen the dog before. No tags. For maybe 15 years I just couldn't be around dogs. It was a great big ole Scooby Doo type of dog. Same color.
Oh then I guess the third most gruesome thing was driving in Minnesota. HALF A DEER just strapped to a van's back door. The front half. You could see everything. They tried to tarp it, but its like they tarped the front half and not the severed part. Why not put it on the top of the van? Why on the back door of the van? It wasn't traumatizing or anything. It just made me wonder what the fuck?
Then I guess there's the fact that my family are farmers and so chickens get butchered, pigs get butchered and neutered.
