Star Fox Zero
Re: Star Fox Zero
Namco tried and failed, and now Platinum is on the same way. The flawlessness of SF64 will be cursing this series forever.

Am the only one that enjoyed SF Assault? Sure it isn't perfect, but I had a lot of fun with it. I think it's totally underrated.

Yeah, it's fairly decent. I don't go back to it very often, but when I do it's not like it makes me want to kill myself or something. I don't understand the fervent hatred it gets from the fan-base. I guess it's just the general internet thing where everything is either the greatest or worst thing ever - nothing can ever be "just okay".

This game has been delayed, until first quarter 2016. Miyamoto wants to add some polish.
So, there's hope this will turn out better than it looks to be, thus far.

I wish he would have taken that stance on Nintendo's hardware.Miyamoto wants to add some polish
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

Yeah, I know...I keep seeing both good and bad comments, from people who got the game early. I'd like a batch of reviews.

Re: Star Fox Zero
So reviews are out.
Reception seems a bit lukewarm sadly. Not terrible reviews, but a bit underwhelming.
Complaints seem to be mainly regarding the unconventional controls, and the fact the game is so short (hmm, games that are given bad reviews by mainstream "reviewers" for being short but based around replaying for score? Where have we seen that before?)
In any case I'll probably be picking this up soon.

Re: Star Fox Zero
Apparently there is a setting to only allow aiming while holding ZR. Sounds like that's the best bet if you want to avoid the wonky controls.
I don't think I'll be picking this one up new.

Re: Star Fox Zero
I received my copy today and gave it a spin for a few hours. The controls certainly have a steep learning curve and when this is combined with at times rather busy level design, everything feels sorta chaotic and out of control at first... I guess that's par for the course considering Platinum's involvement
But once things start to click, it's pretty enjoyable. Arwing and Landmaster sections feel as solid as ever and I really like Arwing's new walker mode. Gyrowing, on the other hand is pretty forgettable addition and really slows things down to a crawl.
The branching paths also work quite differently this time around, since those don't become available until returning to the already cleared stages. So there is only one proper "story mode" path to the end which is a shame. At least the stages themselves seem to have decent replay value with collecting hidden medals and chasing a new score. I noticed you get some extra hits for shooting parts of the already exploding enemies (not sure if this was a thing in SF64), which adds some incentive for more precise aiming.

Re: Star Fox Zero
can't tell if this is another case of the reviewers sucking and not being able to master the control scheme like with the wonderful 101. I was really interested in this, but I'm kind of on the fritz now. the layout of the game really reminds me of kid icarus uprising which I adored.
maybe at a discounted price?

Re: Star Fox Zero
Reviews seems split, Polygon didn't even officially review it they hated it so much.
Others say it's imperfect but fun, but it takes a long time to get the controls to click.

Re: Star Fox Zero
Nintendo have always been known for pick-up-and-play controls .. natural and intutitive. This sounds like a major departure from them and I can't say I like it. Going to say they were desperate to have at least one game that tried to use the Gamepad how they envisioned it, and it failed .. that and Platinum's fetish for wierd control schemes.

Nobody playing it, then?
The gimmick seems more useful for a lone gamer than the 'Cube Crystal Chronicles' at least. Or possibly, Wii U itself IS the new 'Cube Crystal Chronicles.

Re: Star Fox Zero
I bought it and have been enjoying it. My only real gripe with the game is that there's no on-rails bosses, every boss is fought in all-range mode, but I found most of them enjoyable to fight against so its not too big a deal.
Was a tinge disappointed in the Andross fight though
But overall, its a solid game and a lot of fun, personally I picked up the hang of the gyro controls in like 10 minutes and never really felt like I was fighting them to do what I wanted, but I suppose ymmv.

Spoiler
Doing a vast majority of the actual fight in the walker was a little underwhelming

Re: Star Fox Zero
At least one reviewer claimed to have learned the controls quickly, too. That being said, I have not only heard of, but seen with my very own eyes a seasoned gamer fail shockingly at RE4 played with Wiimote & nunchuck, therefore Star Fox Zero, with its much more unique control scheme, was always going to be divisive.
I was thinking of Pilotwings today, how badly Sky Odyssey ruined it for me (no turning back to Pilotwings handling now - not that I didn't try). So tailoring all games' controls to the lowest common denominator is not always for the better.
Perhaps for the sake of getting at least one game that couldn't have quite been done for any other system, WiiU had to be written off first.

Still not worth full retail price only to discover you can't stand the controls. Hope you bought it from a store with a good return policy ..
