Agreed. Since Souls games have PVP, all of the items/equipment/magic and game mechanics should be balanced around it. On a related note, I really hope they disable the use of the primary healing item(s) during PVP this time.

PvP is but a feature in these games. One could play offline for hundreds of hours without ever doing any PvP, and many do just that. Often, things that are good from a PvP perspective are not good from from the perspective of every other facet of the game, and vice versa. The opinion that every aspect of the gameplay should cater to the experience of one specific and optional feature boggles my mind. If they really want a functional PvP experience, they should put in the time to differentiate the mechanics in a PvP context where they make sense. Disabling Estus, as you mention, for example.

Isn't PvsP disabled in Demon's Souls now? I like backstabbing in this one.

Servers are still up in Demon's Souls. It's just harder to get a match because you can't match infinitely up(Darkwraith), down(Darkmoon), regardless of level(Soul Memory), or via Passwords(Bloodborne)

You would need to be within a certain level range.

I really don't like PvP in Souls. It's just an unbalanced poor mans fighting game with some lolzy stage specific abuses. I'd much rather play an actual fighter.

PvE is where it's at for me in Souls. Raddest 3d Castlevania ever. I'm game for whatever makes PvE a better experience.

I agree with Squire that PvE should take precedence over PvP, which is really nothing more than an amusing diversion (as he said, if you want that experience, go play any good fighting game ever), but DkS 1 style backstabs are worse for PvE than DkS 2 style backstabs.

Quite a few of my friends say that DkS 1 backstabs actually work much better for PvP than DkS 2 backstabs, since it gives you more options for breaking a defensive player, but I have no experience with that myself, since I don't seek out PvP in Souls games.

Dark Souls 2 backstabs work better for PvE because you have to initiate it with a punch, meaning you have to get in close and hit the enemy before the attack begins. In Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, you just run up behind an enemy, hit the attack button, and get sucked right into the animation. Plus Dark Souls 2 backstabs weren't invincible, so there was a little more risk involved when using one. Bloodborne has the best backstabs, though. Most of the time you can only land one when you sneak up behind an enemy before he aggros, since you have to stun him first with a charge attack. I like how they've been getting nerfed in every game because they were stupidly overpowered in Demon's and Dark Souls 1.

Re: multiplayer, I only like it for invasions. Having another player enter your world in an attempt to kill you and send you back to the previous checkpoint is exciting. This is one area where Bloodborne dropped the ball hard, so I hope Dark Souls uses the standard multiplayer design from the previous games.

did they patch how backstabs work in dark souls 2? I don't remember them being significantly different to the first game. having said that it's been a fair while since I played 2.

Yeah I can't believe it either, but I'm excited too. As I said in the other thread, playing through dark souls again has made me think about how sweet a dark souls game with the fluidity of bloodborne could be.

Goddamn! Already there's speculation about the scene with a woman jailer holding a brand that looks like the dark sign...
Yes, indeed. The Darksign brands the Undead. And in this land, the Undead are corralled and led to the north, where they are locked away, to await the end of the world... This is your fate.

Lots of spunking going on around here. I need a splashguard.

I'm still cautiously optimistic, since I was so let down by 2. But the art direction certainly seems back on track.
Part 2 reminded me, as a kid, when a different artist would take over my favorite comic. And they weren't as good. And it always frustrated me.

This looks back on track. Bring it.

It looks really good, and seems to have more imaginative designs than DSII. I want this, but I do worry that the games could suffer if they start cranking these out too quickly. I hope they have enough fresh ideas remaining.

What I don't want to see is something like this:

You Died 2016: Dark Souls III
You Died 2017: Bloodborne II
You Died 2018: Dark Souls IV
You Died 2019: Demon's Souls II
etc.

Also, anybody remember when From Software also made other games? I hope riding the current wave of success with these games will allow From Software to also make some unique new games too.

Miyazaki is president now, and he said that he wants to make other genres of games, like they used to. Such as "ninja" games.

I hope so. Just the business is so...costly, it's hard to say if they'll do it or not. I still think if they make an Otogi, with Bloodborne type depth, it would be a hit. I don't think that would be too risky.
People are pretty starved for new games, right now. So, if you want to try some new I.P.s out, now's the time.

I'm surely feeling the hype for more Miyazaki souls.

I hope they won't just make souls games forever now - but mech games and souls would probably be enough variety for me. Actually the thing that gets me excited is the thought of From using all the money and exposure they've been garnering to make a armored core or mech game with some all their resources behind it. The recent ACs have been great but the single player component could be improved. It'd be great to see them make a "mech adventure" game rather than one that's more like target destruction in an arena.

er, anyway, I still haven't played Bloodborne so my plan is to use that to quell the hype within - otherwise it might be unbearable!

I'm also really worrying about this. I really liked what I've seen of DS3, but I'm also seeing so much that has been done before. My hope is that they nail everything awesome about souls and back off, do something else for a while. Believe it or not, BB could actually be a franchise to do something different with. Push it more toward a DMC game, put in a scoring system or something else unique and you might have something. Builds in BB are already rather marginalized, so explore a different angle.

Also, although they didn't invent the Tenchu franchise, I'd love to see them explore the idea with the current BB engine. I'm not saying Tenchu Souls, but I mean the graphics and physics engine. Honestly I really miss the idea of tenchu, but the old games are far too archaic. They need to re-explore this along with some straight action titles (IE where bloodborne is going.)

Image

Obviously I dearly love the souls games, but I think 3 has got to be it for a while. Let swords rust and corpses turn to ash. With luck the next 'souls' game isn't dark souls, but a souls rebirth with new concepts and a new vision.

The initial trailer was interesting, but once I watched the gameplay footage, it seemed like more of the same. It could be a good game but From needs to slow down a little so the Souls games don't become the next annual series like Assassin's Creed. I bet Miyazaki is already commissioned on 1 or 2 other Souls games right now.
