What do others think of shmups?
Re: What do others think of shmups?
" Oh you're playing one of those games that all look the same "
And I think i've mentioned my friend who just spams bombs even when there are no enemies on screen, then is satisfied and doesn't credit feed. She also tells me I'm playing it wrong and not bombing enough.

Wisest advice ever. Learning to let the bombs loose is a skill that few can master.Blinge wrote:" She also tells me I'm playing it wrong and not bombing enough.

My cousin says I need to play new games instead.
By "new games" he means stuff like League of Legends, Perfect World and Warface. He says they're much cooler. And I'm like "umm... yeah, I may give 'em a shot later"
I just don't tell him to piss off so he won't say I'm rude.

Ask him why he thinks those are better, then respond to his answer with why you don't think so :3Synnae wrote:My cousin says I need to play new games instead.

At the least you get to understand their thought process.

Non shmuppers will never understand the appeal.

Well, some games, like GigaWing 2 for instance, would be extremely annoying if you dropped bomb after bomb, especially since you receive verbal recognition from the game every time you do so in the most irritating manner possible.Blinge wrote:She also tells me I'm playing it wrong and not bombing enough.

Of the people I know:
One friend that got me into the genre, by showing me Mushi, DDP, and the Touhou series.
One friend bought Deathsmiles, and he got pretty good at it, but I don't think he's interested in other shmups.
One friend that's into the Touhou games, and we were working on a 2 player 1cc of Dariusburst Arcade earlier.
Girlfriend thinks these games are rubbish though.

Haha I appreciate the sentiment but my clears aren't impressive enough yet.. if there is a right way to play these games I doubt I've got it.mehguy wrote:Lol. It's too subjective of course but I wonder what a WR holder would consider a "right way" if asked.
Eh, the bombs do that? I thought it was just the reflect meter refilling.GrantWindsor wrote:Well, some games, like GigaWing 2 for instance, would be extremely annoying if you dropped bomb after bomb, especially since you receive verbal recognition from the game every time you do so in the most irritating manner possible.
I rarely see 2 player clears online, which is a shame so It'd be cool if you could record it.To Far Away Times wrote: One friend that's into the Touhou games, and we were working on a 2 player 1cc of Dariusburst Arcade earlier.
JWS and myself are working on a dual 1cc for Under Defeat whenever we get a chance

He's probably referring to the voice acting when you use a bomb (in the Japanese version, they seem to have cut out voice acting in the American version).Blinge wrote:Eh, the bombs do that? When playing a great game where bullets do not cover more than 60% of the screen:
-Blah, kid games.
-How can you play something so stupid
-Does it ever get boring
-Its all the same
-You should play a real game like *shitty fps*
-I never understand the appeal of these games
-What kind of game is this
When playing a great game where bullets cover more than 60% of the screen: (note:most of these are in awe)
-How is he not dead yet
-I could never play this for more than 10 seconds
-Amazing (and other varieties)
-That looks hard and fun, but the graphics are shit
-*slowly backing away*
When playing a great game with new-ish graphics where bullets cover more than 60% of the screen:
*not tested among people yet*

Re: What do others think of shmups?
I had an awkward moment when catching up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while the other day. I explained to them that I was publishing Crimzon Clover, one of the best doujin shooting games ever made. They then asked me how I had gotten into publishing pornographic videogames. Pretty sure they were pulling my leg. Probably...
Re: What do others think of shmups?
I don't have a lot of friends, let alone ones that know I play STG, but one friend of mine actually opened up my mind a bit about trying arcade STG. He was staying over while I had recently gotten into Touhou series and he showed me a video of Sexy Parodius. At the time Touhou series were the only games I really played, since before that I wasn't into video games since I thought I had outgrown them. Sexy Parodius made me want to check out more arcade games, and this friend of mine has been here and co-oped many STGs with me (though we always credit feed them) other than that I can't say I've ever had any conversations about STG, aside from with some family members that saw me play or watch videos of them and they don't care one bit.

You should have just said "indie" or "2d indie" or something. It's become a bit of a misconception with mainstream gamers that "doujin" = anime porn fanfiction.Blackbird wrote:I had an awkward moment when catching up with some friends I hadn't seen in a while the other day. Re: What do others think of shmups?
There is only one other person in real life who knows about my affinity for STGs. He doesn't look down on the genre as outdated or inferior, but personally finds it repetitive and boring, and can't get a handle on how to dodge bullets or use bombs correctly. He has tried unsuccessfully to play several games in co-op with me. He feels much the same way about the 2D fighting genre (besides Smash Bros.) and could not pull off a Shoryuken with any consistency.
I once had an acquaintance whose friend had cosplayed as a character who I identified as Len from Deathsmiles.

So I've learned ^_^;.. it was kind of amusing. Let's just blame Touhou for ruining everything and making Westerners think that doujin = little girls in frilly costumes.
...mostly kidding of course.
Re: What do others think of shmups?
You can blame the general proliferation of scanned and pirated doujin H-manga for tainting the word.

Wow, I didn't even know that. I import most of my games, so I'm only familiar with the Japanese version. But, yeah, that's what I'm talking about. It wouldn't be the same, though, without that maniac screaming "bomber" when you toss a bomb.BareKnuckleRoo wrote:He's probably referring to the voice acting when you use a bomb (in the Japanese version, they seem to have cut out voice acting in the American version).
Re: What do others think of shmups?
My wife actually appreciates that I don't like "all those WW II games that are very violent and must be damaging kids who play them too much alone in their bedroom".
Daughter one has tried the odd one - we have had some fun playing Mushi Futari in 2 player for example, but usually leaves me to it if she sees me playing. If daughter 2 sees me playing its just me playing those "weird Japanese games again". Both have had fun credit feeding Parodius games on the Saturn in 2 player mode, and they also enjoyed credit feeding Raiden III (they really like the green laser!!) which I found surprising as that's a fairly dull looking militaristic game.
Lets be honest honest though - to the uninitiated, shooting games , especially the modern ones, aren't really spectator friendly. Once you know how to play them they can be interesting to watch but to the casual observer they probably look pretty mindless - even more so that a typical FPS which an observer could at least relate to some frame of reference.

Re: What do others think of shmups?
Practicing the game or its inputs just to play the game better is an alien concept to most people. I've known people who refuse because practice takes the experience outside the acceptable realm of fun and into true nerdy territory. Hell, it was alien to me until around 2011. I think the first thing I specifically practiced outside of simply playing the game was quickscoping in CoD >_<Pretas wrote: and could not pull off a Shoryuken with any consistency.

This whole convo reminds me of when sf4 first came out. And the it was the fighting game revival. I would just sit in training mode practicing to fadc for an hour or something, till I got it down to muscle memory.Blinge wrote:Practicing the game or its inputs just to play the game better is an alien concept to most people. Re: What do others think of shmups?
My wife tolerates them, she occasionally watches me play Futari on Ultra because it just overwhelms her and she doesn't understand how I survive.
She can't stand the "japanese girly voices" in many shmups tho, like when you throw a bomb in futari or ketsui, and she finds Deathsmiles a bit disturbing (who doesn't actually)
She did play Raiden 4 all the way to the end with me once and she did surprisingly well, continued maybe twice, but she said she had a headache after. Not bad considering the only games she ever plays is Tetris and Puzzle Fighter.

Re: What do others think of shmups?
Somehow, i am good at executing combos. I just need to know the input and an hour of practice, by then i can already string two-three moves together. 8 out of 10 times being able to pull it off. Longer moves require more time. I can usually reach the last boss with a few days of practice in normal difficulty. I usually play KoF and GG.mastermx wrote:I would just sit in training mode practicing to fadc for an hour or something, till I got it down to muscle memory.
However, i have never gone up against anyone in p2p. So i have no clue how i would fare against high level players or the kind of accuracy required to be there.
OT: my roommate has seen me playing shmups. He just bunches them together into "Your Japanese Games" and "they all look the same" category. GF however recognizes each games, and has developed a liking for DFK on android.
