are we sure that Chrono Trigger problem is that same as Killer Instinct 64 problem ?

It's similar as the consoles change the output timings on the fly, but the video modes are rather different. While the N64 displays true 480i, the SNES just uses some line trickery to achieve a "higher-res" look - maybe to actively fight scanlines ? - but the resolution is still kinda limited.

Re: Best scalers for alternating 480i/240p sources?
For those interested in timing how long it takes to certain processors or scalers when changing between 480i and 240p, I coded a particular timed test for the 240p test suite, from version 1.17 and above. Only the Dreamcast version of the test has this change:
Let me know if you have any other ideas for such tests.
Code: Select all
http://code.google.com/p/240p-test-suite/downloads/list
Version 1.17: New test for evaluating upscaler/TV response time when switching between 240p and 480i.
It is a simple test with a chronometer running. It starts in 240p, and when the A button is pressed the resolution changes to 480i and a time stamp is taken and shown. When the screen comes up in the upscaler/TV you must press A again, and a new time stamp is printed. This process stores timestamps for 10 cycles, and then starts over.-

a quick update with my tests and chrono trigger
the lavos problem (without sync strike) does not always happen, but definitly happens if you let the intro run within maximum 10 minutes
I will retry with sync strike, to be sure that it was not "luck" yesterday
240p test suite seems to have a better benchmark, I should try

I tested another game, biohazard 2 (nintendo 64) and XRGB-3 lose sync (for 1 sec) when you press START (inventory).
iScan VP30 + ABT dont lose sync !
anyone know if XRGB-1/2 and DISPL lose sync just like XRGB-3 ?
update : Killer Instinct Gold dont lose sync with iScan VP30 too (but lose sync with XRGB-3)

Re: Best scalers for alternating 480i/240p sources?
makes sense, since the ABT102 handles both signals as 480i, so there's no need to resync or to switch to a different processing mode. XRGB2/DISPL are just like the XRGB-3. The only way around is to treat both signals as 240p (BitBlitz) or treat both as 480i (ABT102).

ok, are you saying that BitBlitz will support 240p/480pi switching on the fly ?
another test with biohazard 2 and Xcapture, same problem as XRGB-3
so at the moment, the only solution for "proper" capture/gameplay with 240p/480i switching games is ONLY VP30 + ABT102 ?

No Apparently it was going to have a 480i mode by dip switch, but that may have gotten canned.akumajo wrote:ok, are you saying that BitBlitz will support 240p/480pi switching on the fly ?

I don't want to resurrect this question again, but at the very least feeding 480i through the BitBlitz 240p processing will result in a picture (albeit with possible flicker). I have not made a definite decision on a dip switch, I'm focused on the moment at polishing off 240p processing.
