In England we have Chavs.

Goddamn, you do not want to hear about the Chavs.

At the risk of misspeaking for the whole board, I don't think anyone so far has a problem with Asians per se, it's just that certain Asian teenagers in North America seem to have been singled out as a class of annoying git that's acting up to get attention. More generally, it's teenagers without hobbies, or something like that.

Edit: I was thinking about chavs, didn't see above post. Glad I don't live in the UK, but I learned all about chavs when I used to follow b3ta.

Example please.
Ah, sorry... Chinese symbols or Kanji symbols.
Since we mostly don't have Triad members running around North America, I guess laughing at this is justified, since it's out of place.

But lord knows if they tattoo things like "I love <insert name here>" in Chinese or Kanji, that would just be normal I think.

Even better, I know someone personally that has a tribal-style tattoo covering her lower back, with a blank spot in the middle that consists a series of numbers.

Telephone numbers.

No, I'm not shitting you. She has telephone numbers on her back. It says, "Jenny" and "Travis" if you look at the dial numbers.

A small story behind this: She was with her ex-boyfriend at that time. They had an argument, then broke up. Next day, she got it tattooed on her lower back. Now she regrets it.

Hah. One day in chemistry class, there's like this so-called badass gangster that had to go get a vaccine shot, and we all had to go and get one as well, so we all took a shot, it didn't hurt, and him...well... he shreiked like a little girl loudly across the gymnasium. [Note: the gymnasium was where we all had to go get our vaccine shot]

A poor family in the countryside in Vietnam, for example, make approximately 1.5 -> 2 CND a day. This value might fluctuate up and down depending on crops, but it's an average estimate.

An average haircut in a well-known salon around here costs 60 CND.

But that haircut is just barebone, no dye, curl, straigtening whatsoever. A "Japanese ion straightening" session in any average salon that offer this service will set you back 200 CND. If you want hair that can be style into anime-like spikes, this is the choice for you.

You do the math, my friend.

EDIT: it's not that I'm against going to a good salon and have a $60 haircut once in a while. Sometimes you actually need it, say, to appear a certain way for your job. But those "Asian who wants to be White", you know, they never stop at the barebone cut.
UFO's point without the bull:

Everybody needs a bite, so if they spend 60 on a haircut, they're feeding the people working at the salon.

Yeah, we have a lot of those kinds of Asians in my neighbourhood, and IMO, it usually gives Asians in general a bad name, like holy crap, at least 7 out of 10 Asians carry machetes around here. [in short for PPPP: co nhieu nguoi o day la 'be de/khon nang']

Nah~ I like Asians, I just prefer Asians to stay Asian.

What's funny about Chinese tattoos is when the character has several meanings. Like, I saw one girl who had the character for "peace". But the word is also used to mean level, common, or flat
And there's the story of the tattoo artist who wrote "explosive diarrhoea", and the customer (not knowing what the characters meant) left quite pleased at the exotic-looking tattoo.

Yes, but then what about the melting pot spiel? I never understood the whole diversity thing in the context of that while I was in California.

I see your point.

I did said above that I'm not against going to salons, even expensive ones, there are real needs for that at times. But there are certain types of "personal adornments" that just seems completely wasteful to me, especially if you compare that with the living standard of developing nations. Of course this is my personal opinion that those things like a $200 straightening (and then a recurling takes the same amount too) are wasteful. But don't you think that what I said is reasonable?

Would you be at least a bit offended when you know that there are people working their asses off, producing a lot of food for other people, yet living in horrid standards themselves?

Wasteful? Yes. I don't get haircuts worth more than $10. However, I buy videogames for $50 bucks. They cannot stop me from buying videogames; I can't stop them from getting $50 or more haircuts. At least, we are feeding some people. They are feeding the salon workers. I'm feeding the people who sell me the videogames. I realize I can't save everybody, but at least, the guys at the videogame stores and salons aren't joining people in the fields.
