I would think more of those strange ghosts from Sengoku.

Indeed, but at least we have direction. It may be in the totally wrong way, but it's arguably better than collecting for the sake of collecting.

Don't you ever ask yourself 'Why do I have all of this?' I bet you don't play half of it.

As I've got older I've began to enjoy minimalist rooms with just the bare essentials in. Shelves full of retro do nothing for me nowadays. I can give it a nod and think 'cool' but I certainly wouldn't want to own it.

I only collect games I could not afford as a kid, even though I wanted to; mainly c64 games and some amiga games, and some selected few PCB boards I rather play on real hardware rather than mame.

Most of the stuff from 1996 onwards I ever wanted I already own, and it's not that much space really.
There's very little from megadrive/snes I really want, none of the nes stuff, but PC-engine is something I always wanted, so I guess I will be collecting some of that from few years on.

Ten years ago I had a room full of games & CDs, and as far as digital only collections of music/video/games - sheer insanity. Now... I'm finally working through getting rid of the last of the CDs, I've got a few PCBs, MVS carts and Xbox 360 games, and a terabyte hard disk that's only a third full.

If I've not used something in the past 12 months, it's gone.

God...yeah, that's fuckin' Pete Dorr, the biggest frickin' dolt on Youtube next to Gamester81. At least Gamester seems to (somehow) afford his ridiculous addiction, but Pete Dorr openly says that he uses his parent's credit card--or that's how he got started out, at least. Both idiots collect absolutely everything they find. Like, yeah...Sonic happy meal cardboard cutouts and every form of paper advertisement ever. I'm pretty sure both of them pick up near a hundred games a month at times. It's pretty absurd. Pete is attempting to collect every 3DO game boxed...that says it all right there.

I've been in that boat, too, so I feel like I can contribute to the chat. I used to collect DVDs. I've still got like....1600, but I've been slowly trying to cut that list down and sell a bunch of them. I know I won't get dick for half of it, and yeah, I regret it. I still collect crap, obviously, but I sit and stew and ponder on things before I buy them. Sometimes for weeks, sometimes for months, really. It's feels good to look at your collection of stuff you've amassed through the years and be proud of it. I don't think I could look at a shelf full of shitty PAL N64 games and be proud of that. I like to look at my things, open them up, and then play them. It's quite a joyous feeling. Now I've got like 20 something consoles and probably near 800 games, maybe less. Anything I've bought, I've played, or plan on playing. If I hate it I sell it. Any crap games I've amassed were given to me, which is quite a bit, actually.

I love collecting. I'll always be a collector. If you don't use your shit, then you're wasting your time, space and money. Collecting to just "complete" collections or have the biggest is stupid. Someday you'll probably regret it when your wife leaves you (Luke Morse) or you can't afford an actual place to live.

Collecting... At least being interested in 1 genre only gives a narrow direction to try and keep it under control. I do find myself not playing all of what I buy, but I would like to if I had the time.

I think this is a key difference. I'm pretty particular about what I hold on to or look to buy in the first place. I don't want or need a complete set of any console's games, since the catalogues are usually 70% not worth a second look.

I sell stuff all the time too. I'd rather just have a collection that fills the criteria of either having childhood nostalgic value, value in terms of rarity/finance, and quality of the game so that I know I'll come back to it again. Sometimes there are clashes, esp. with rarity & quality not always going hand in hand.

But the thing I love most is playing. I like dragging out a console that hasn't seen any action in a while because I bought something new for it, and then pulling the full set of games out of the cupboard and just giving it a good dedicated week of play. Sometimes when friends visit we just clear as many titles as we can over a few days. We managed 8 in a row when this topic was active.

Anyway.

You can buy Jimmy's entire Xbox 360 collection in CEX for £15. Bargain.

This guy had a PS3 collection, but he ate it.

And now for something completely different, a game collection worth mentioning because the youtuber explains why he likes them, has obviously played them all, isn't a complete dick, and has more chance of getting laid than the guys in all the other videos posted so far.

And he's 11 years old. You go cool little gamer dude! :D

Direction compared to what, the direction of collecting PAL N64 games? It's the exact same thing, acquisition for the sake of.

So, this thread revolves around shitting on people's collections that appear inferior to theirs?

Nah, fuck that. I saw an awesome PAL Megadrive collection once. I think it was on NeoGAF. Wish I could find it again.

One major problem I've found with collecting older stuff is the fragility of the consoles themselves. My NES, Genesis and SNES all are inoperable now, which is real mystery, because I've always taken good care of my stuff. Maybe the pins just need to be cleaned on each of them, but still. I can't just pull out the Genesis and play a game of Toe Jam & Earl.

Pretty much. Personally I'd lose most of it and swap the remaining good stuff into JP region (bar the Zeldas/Paper Mario and a few others.)

N64 pretty much just sucks in general. There's like 5 good games. For me it ranks just above 3DO and right below Sega Mega CD in terms of quality.

How does changing the collection into Japanese make it any different? If you were Japanese, you would equally find a Japanese N64 collection as uninteresting as if you were British, finding a PAL N64 collection uninteresting. The point is, hating on collections is childish and stupid, especially in a forum where people do just that.

I'd certainly find it equally as dumb if it was JP. And even more unplayable.

Damn straight! :)

(I should probably point out that I really don't care what people collect that much, I just found some of the videos amusing. You can collect dildos if it moves you. As I said on the first page, people would probably think my collection of games is pointless and dumb too, and that's fine. Sealed game collectors deserve death tho.

I'm sure collectors of dildo's probably use them more for their intended purpose than game collectors.

Mega CD has some decent shooters. And it has Snatcher. And the Lunars. And Popful Mail. And Sonic CD. And a good port of Final Fight with nice arranged music.

N64 has lots of blocky polygons and distance fog.

Don't hate on the fog. :)

I also like Switch, Ninja Warriors, Time Gal, Ninja Hayate, Road Avenger amongst others, but it's generally a pretty crummy library. I think the highest highs of the N64 (Zelda's, Excitebike, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Bangaioh, Kirby, Starfox, Pilotwings, Wonder Project J etc etc) topped it overall.

N64 is the better system overall, if you aren't stuck in the mindset that games have to be arcade ports. More titles, far more diversity. There's even a couple games you can play for score if you like ;)

The pic Elixir posted of N64 games showed some of the good ones. The ones on the right were less notable for me than many on the left.

I don't collect because I think this stuff is a worthwhile investment. I spend on junk because it keeps me perpetually entertained until something better comes along... and I tend to go back to the junk to be entertained by it again. This is merely to pass the time and it works because I'm seldom ever bored or feel bad/bummed out. I just pop in a movie and watch it, then another and another and another, and then I read a book, and then I spin a music CD or cassette, and then I play a video game or two. To an outsider, this may seem as a total waste of time, a ludicrous waste of money, or at least as something absolutely crazy to point and scoff/laugh at. Hmwell, I don't expect others to empathise or understand what I find enjoyable and fun because I don't do it for their benefit. On average, life expectancy is in the upper 70s, early 80s; that ain't s*** in the grand scheme of things - I must spend as much of that having a good time before time's up, even if that were to involve collecting a buncha crappy PAL N64 games 8)

N64 has lots of blocky polygons
out of the consoles of its time, the n64 actually allows for the largest number of polygons to be processed at once. just look at the pokemon stadium games.
