You should check out the PCE CD version, as well as Gate of Thunder and just get into the PCE emulation.
For MD/Genesis emulation I recommend Eliminate Down.

Re: Lords of Thunder - Sega CD
I have an actual PCE, why emulate it? (I have Gate of Thunder too BTW)

Why play the Sega CD version, then?

Because it's still a good game. A few less colors and it being a bit easier doesn't abruptly make it a poor-quality shmup.

Re: Lords of Thunder - Sega CD
More specifically, why play the Sega CD version rather than the PCE CD one?

It's easier if you're not that good at shmups, and the music is better (in my opinion).
Re: Lords of Thunder - Sega CD
I also enjoy the revisioned tunes the Sega CD version has and tend to veer towards that version because of it.

Also, you get the sexy shopkeeper voice that they inexplicably cut from the US Turbo-CD version.

Plus the fact that TTI cut out the narrator's voiceover at the intro cutscene for the U.S. version of Lords of Thunder as well. Does give it a better sense of storytelling with utilizing the player's imagination to view/decipher what's going on in the LoT universe. Plus the TTI version of LoT's front cover artwork is pure classic Shirow Masamune (of Appleseed & Ghost In the Shell manga fame).
The original PCE version of Winds of Thunder's instruction manual folds out into a cool manga intro, something that the TTI version of LoT is sorely lacking indeed.
