It's not a mater of jealousy, it's a matter of reality.
We cannot afford to keep paying these public sector unions these ridiculous wages and benefits, especially when they seem to insist on yearly raises that far exceed the norm outside of the unions, regardless of the state of the economy.
It would be great to live in a world where everybody made fat cash, even those unskilled workers who should be making minimum wage doing menial labor, but sadly the economy could not support a system like that.
These are not positions that involve going to school or earning credentials, they are unskilled and trained to do their position. They could be replaced by anybody off the street. If you are a valuable asset with knowledge or skills and not readily replaced, you are worth a higher wage. If not, it doesn't make sense to have mail carriers or sorters or garbage men or people sweeping the streets making more money than people with education and skills.
Just my 2 cents.
Out of curiosity, what do you do for a living JoshF?
High wages and other treats can be afforded easily by taking money from rich people, much like how rich people can easily afford mansions and their goodies by taking money from working class people.
Words like "entitled" and "earned" confuse me because no one is entitled to anything in reality. When it comes to politics these are just words to make someone less combative (if at all) when you take something. The only way you become entitled to something is by fighting for it and winning. Right now the rich are winning this fight, which is why to most people the money they take is "earned" while the money their opponents take is "stolen". The reason they hate unions is because they are one of the last tools people are supposed have in a democracy that isn't completely bought or destroyed.
Also, my job right now is cleaning an office.
they make too much, and yet complain. They have 0 compassion from the public, obviously. Anybody can sell packing tape and prepaid envelopes. At 25$/hour that's more than I do, and I studied/worked my butt off to be where I am right now, whereas people I know that are in the system make top dollar and they literally have shit for brains.
The corporatist lapdog you listen to on the radio or TV that makes you think shit for brains making 20 bucks an hour are the problem instead of shit for brains making millions a year is worth whatever his masters pay him.
