Mame Beat em' ups
Re: Mame Beat em' ups
Also not mame but sor remake on pc definitely deserves a shout.
Re: Mame Beat em' ups
So... I've been playing Knights of the Round (Capcom's 1991 classic beat-em'up which introduced... blocking!). However the difficulty is very high at the end and I only made it to final stage once.... should I keep playing or just put off the game due high difficulty?Drum wrote:Couple of easy ones: Golden Axe Revenge of Death Adder, Warrior Blade: Rastan Saga III. The latter is maybe the fairest game in the genre I've played - bosses are a little on the easy side, but they are also not cheap either..

Is there any love for Captain Commando?
Re: Mame Beat em' ups
Captain Commando is also a very good game. It's one of the first bmups I've ever played, along with Final Fight.
I see no one mentioned Alien Storm yet. Classic bmup that has some humor in it and mixes things a bit with FPS and running sections.

Re: Mame Beat em' ups
Yesterday im exploring MAME and i found a very bizarre Toaplan beat em up called "Knuckle bash". My first impression about this game is "OMG quit it fast" but when i found so many juggles and funnyes characters, i start love this game. If you play this game try to do the "15 hits air-combo" and hit the enemy when it are in the floor. Elvis brother are the best fighter

Re: Mame Beat em' ups
Sad to see this genre almost dead except for IGS's efforts. In the transition to 3D beat em ups lost a lot of complexity.
To me the best in the genre is Alien vs. Predator. Extremely technical combo system, great character variety, manic pacing, brutal difficulty, superb presentation... and the physics are great too, some games in the genre (Guardian Heroes is one of the worst offenders) feel too floaty to me.
An AvsP goldmine.
A "hidden gem" would be Denjin Makai. One of the ugliest games I ever played, with awful character designs and colour choices, but also has what's probably the most complex combo system in the genre. Stage and character variety is excellent too, so if you can get past the eye gouging visuals this is one of the most accomplished beat'em ups. Examples of what you can do in that game: [1] [2] [3]
Shadow Force is also excellent and miles ahead of its competitors at the time in terms of system complexity.
I can't wait to play IGS's newer games (The Gladiator, Knights of Valour 3, Oriental Legend 2)... it would be nice if they released their games on console or something so I don't have to wait years to play them on MAME or spend a fortune on the PCBs.

Denjin Makai 2 has excellent character designs, you mutant. That muscleman boss is an absolute classic.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Whenever I load up Brezzasoft's "The Crystal of Kings," I have fun with it. The wise man will not question my beat-em-up tastes
Really not sure about the quality, but it's got some interesting ideas and scenes to play through anyway. Seems very simplistic though, and probably not much challenge - at least not through the first two stages or so.

Re: Mame Beat em' ups
Yeah, The Crystal of Kings stays fairly easy until the final boss, where it hits what must be the biggest difficulty spike in any beatemup ever.
I assume you're aware of the crystal ranking system? (explained at HG101) There's an extra final boss and different ending for finishing with the minimum ranking (evil), though the boss is just one of the playable characters you aren't using.
I guess there were never any other games released for the Zealer Board besides Evolution Soccer, huh? It's a bizarre piece of hardware; the control setup, service menu and even the styling of the cartridges and slot are clearly modeled after the Neo MVS. Wasn't BrezzaSoft one of the companies (with Sun Electronics, EOLITH, Mega Corporation, and Playmore) who helped keep the Neo-Geo alive between the old SNK's death and the creation of SNK Playmore? That would make sense.
