was working from home today and was on the third floor of the house and the place rattled like crazy, some damage to goods and a family friend who was visiting fell and broke her leg in three places. But nothing serious

quite shitty waiting to get in touch with the wife who was at work. Twitter seemed to be the communication tool to use given that it was up and rocking. Sucks that the wife isn't on Twitter :/ but hey, everyone is safe so that's all good.

Speechless.

I'm very glad you guys are ok. Heard the earthquake was the one of the most ferocious in history, but didn't take any lives so far. I really hope the Tsunami doesn't do more damage than it already has(taking lives).

Death toll is rising pretty fast, actually. 200-300 bodies found in Miyagi alone, plus over 60 found throughout the country and a boat with 100 passengers got swept away. If less than 1,000 die it would be a miracle considering the damage.

It'd be nice if the aftershocks stopped so I can get some sleep. :/

that death toll is going to go flying up - they simply have no idea how many people died in the North East yet and watching the tsunami gobble up cars , boats, houses etc like they were nothing does not fill me with hope that the current relatively low death toll will stay low :(

Yea the shinkansen was shut down for the day so no Tokyo for me this weekend. It'll be another week before the arcade in Nakano gets around to installing Pork anyways. :/

GP, you're always welcome. English-speakers only, though.

My girlfriend is safe at least and sent me pictures of her apartment. Absolutely trashed, good thing she wasn't home.

The news of this is just terrible. I hope that all of the people are safe, along with their families, and friends. My heart goes out to anyone that is struggling with this. I hope that it will subside as soon as poosible, and those in need of help get it as soon as possible.

Seconded. This is just insane news. Need to call a few friends in japan now and make sure they're alright.

From the video I've managed to see, things look pretty bleak, but glad to see members living out in Japan checking in and letting us know they are ok. I swore I read that a couple days ago a 7.2 hit off the coast around Honshou, this 8.9 now makes that seem much smaller than when my eyes bugged on that 7.2.

An unthinkable catastrophe!
The Earthquake is 8000 times stronger than the one that hit Christchurch in NZ recently.
I hope most people in the area are unharmed.
And hopefully the Radioactivity of those malfunctioning power plants can be contained.

Friend of mine lives near tokyo but is fine apart from being a bit sea-sick. The building was shaking for 45mins apparently.

He said local info there seems to suggest 88000 missing :( Pretty dire news by any standards.

I heard the news while I was out last night, a 8.9 is some serious shit. I guess it's lucky that at least it happened during the day so people could be somewhat prepared, but still not much can stop a 6 meter wave. Best wishes to everyone over there.

That is some huge damage from the footage I saw. I can't even say I hope people are OK, the ones who lost their homes and families are obviously not, I don't know how a city and its people can recover from this.

My heart goes out to all those affected by this disaster.

I live a few thousand miles away, over in San Francisco. woke up this morning, went for a jog, and noticed that the cops were outside. I asked what was up, and they said it was a tsunami warning! Still, I had no idea what the magnitude was of the situation. Getting back in, I was sleepily reading the news and read about the 8.9 earthquake.

That's when I decided to not stick around :) (I don't think the waves did much of anything in SF though)

Anyway, pretty terrible. I hope all the folks on this forum who are over there, or in any of the islands in the Pacific, are ok.

You gotta give credits to the Japaneses engineers, pretty much all the buildings are still standing. If anything that strong was to hit here where i live, the entire city would be leveled :|. Also folks over there seem to be reacting in a calm and orderly way, they deserve much praise for the way they handle this.

I sure picked the right time when ordering 150$ of doujins from Rancor Yesterday... Well anyway thats just a few games, hope hes allright :\

You're invited to our gay party in Tokyo next month, GP. Read the other thread.

Anyhow, for everyone stuck at work and don't have access to a TV, CNN has live streaming of NHK here:
