Oh.

Do you know how to run games direct from ISOs without using discs/ghost drives? Because I think I'd rather stick with MAME otherwise. Also, how is MESS with Saturn? (or anything for that matter)

some emulators have that capability, or you could burn the iso to a disc of course

I don't remember what my Playstation emulator is called. I think it's PSXE? It can load games direct from the ISO's.

ISOs can usually be loaded in Alcohol 52% Free Edition, which is basically the same thing as Alcohol 101%. Comes with DRM cloaking as well. Unfortunately it still, after all these years, doesn't defeat simple CD checks but that's more of a problem for PC games.

DAEMON Tools also works. And yeah, unlike ePSXe, you do need a disc drive emulator for SSF.

Being more fair, though, there's not an enormous difference between the arcade and Saturn versions. It's up to you whether prettier graphics and a button to lock your aim are worth the effort.

Hyper Duel on MAME is pretty lagless. Dunno about the Saturn port and emulators.

Boogie Wings is mostly environment-death free if I remember correctly.

ProGear plays like a danmaku game, but is horizontal.

Bike Banditz, horizontal danmaku for PC with walls that don't kill you. Excellent game.
My 1CCs so I can find the list easier myself

I am conflicted on this. I am lazy enough that aim-locking sounds awesome, but too lazy to set up a ghost drive/burn isos to discs. I think I'll put off thinking about it and play Sengoku Blade.

EDIT: On MAME.

Burning discs to play games on emulators is a fool's errand, but DAEMON Tools is something you should have installed and set up once and for all if you are into any sort of gaming. It's as easy as installing the application and setting the number of emulated devices to 4. Then you have that tray icon handy and that's it.

Thanks for reminding me of Hyper Duel - don't know why that wasn't in my MAME favourites folder, because it is rad. Also, every year was Data East's best year!
I thought Technosoft made Hyper Duel. ._.

Also holy crap did no one mention In The Hunt yet

Oh and I'd also add...I'm not a fan of killer walls either.

Or touch-of-death. Which is why games where YOU have touch-of-death instead are awesome. Like Zero Gunner 2.

EDIT: I've played Hyper Duel in an emulator, DO NOT USE SSF. Use Yabause. SSF won't load the next stage. As an added bonus, you can load ROMs directly!

And it was awesome. Just...In The Hunt doesn't work, but that's okay because the only thing that made it decent on the Saturn was remixed music which honestly wasn't very good anyway (But it might be worth listening to...if only there was a Sound Test, god damn it!).

As for R-Type Delta, I'm not a fan of the polygon graphics either, but by that time the graphic artists were off in thier own company anyway making Metal Slug (And then SNK blah blah who cares what I'm saying at this point) so it's not like Irem could say, "Hey, can you make the next R-Type?"

That said, I will kind of admit that Irem was probably better with the whole thing without the original developers, since god damn the games were hard when they made it.

So basically it's a win-win: Irem makes decently playable R-Type games while the R-Type developers make Metal Slug eye candy. Except both of those are questionable as of today. But still.

Battle Mania (and its sequel) is the only hori with environmental obstacles that I can remember right now which fits the criteria
