I remember staring & drooling at some preview pics of Super R-Type in an old issue of Nintendo Power back in 1990-1, few months before the SNES was released, showing off the SNES colour palette.

This particular screen-shot is probably the coolest Boss preview pic I've seen. At least for a 10 year old back in the day...

I only got to play it via emulation 5 years ago, but personally I liked R-Type II on the Amiga better. Best music of all R-Type II compilations on any system & no slowdowns. Probably the best Arcade port too.

I love the AMIGA title/intro screens:

Super R-Type is not a true R-Type II port imo, as most levels & Bosses have been changed, but the graphics & gameplay are great.

I went from playing r-type on the spectrum to super r-type so I was well impressed with it back then.

Haven't had a chance to relive the glory yet to see if it's aged badly or not.

Not at all - heres a breakdown:

1 - really crap level that serves no purpose (new)
2 - Fortress (Stage 1 from R-Type II)
3 - Aquatic stage (Similar themes to R-Type II's second stage but largely original)
4 - Battleship (new)
5 - Maze (Stage 4 from R-Type II)
6 - Bydo Factory (new)
7 - Bydo Homeworld (Final stage from R-Type II)
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

I'd suggest this correction:

3 - Aquatic stage (with no water whatsoever)

R-Type II was rumored by EGM to be coming out on Genesis, before the announcement of R-Type II for the Super Famicom/SNES. we saw previews of Nintendo version and drooled - then it was announced that Irem would be creating a new game called Super R-Type instead, which turned out to be a mix of R-Type II levels and new levels.
