sad to hear, this movie needs its own Robert Mruczek type character.

Any other cool shmuppers besides our own GP interviewed in this upcoming 100 Yen documentary?

After viewing the 100 Yen film trailer, it's always a cool trip down memory lane with my time spent visiting some Japanese game centers back in the day. The diverse selection that you can see inside such game centers puts many of the existing American arcades to shame. To take the escalator to the next floor up at the Kyoto based Namco Wonder Tower game center was quite something. Back in late March of 2000, Success Corp. had just released it's G-Card game of Psyvariar Medium Unit running on the Taito G-Net arcade platform to game centers nationwide...so that was the latest arcade shmup title to pay attention to.

I was, but I think most of what I said will probably hit the cutting room floor.

I had a hard time finding the point in this documentary other than "Japan is cool". Arcades in Japan aren't in the awful shape they are in the States and they're also not flourishing, they're just in a slump. There's no real story there, so I think this movie will suffer from that.

How'd you know I was in there, PCE-FX? I'm sure I was truncated down as well, if I even made it. I did cycle there in the rain, so should get at least a shout out. I was probably the longest-term gaijin in the production I would guess, at 10+ years of residence (most geeking out) so maybe that counts for something. Pretty basic stuff really... and I'm pretty sure I was clean shaven. Something that doesn't happen that often.

Err.. I recognized that deep, sultry voice from the trailer. Right at the beginning they use one of your quotes.. That was you, right?

Japanese arcades actually strike me as something you could really condemn if you set your sights on it, or just opened your eyes (or took the clothespin off your nose)...I can't say I mind them not doing that, but yeah, where's the beef?

Guess I'm not watching the same trailer. The one on their front page, right?\

EDIT: The long version won't load for me. :(
EDIT -- got there. And yeah -- I hate my voice. Can't believe in a drunken stupor on my last flight someone in radio told me I'd be a shoe-in. :/

Okay, finally got to watch it all. I saw the other shmupper. ;)

I'm pretty excited about the production value. The guys were really down to earth and seemed to be pretty enthusiastic about the project and film-making in general. If the final product is like the trailer, I'm sure we'll be happy. It was great to see they had a bilingual on the production staff.

Oh, I was actually kind of involved in this movie, doing the music game segment (heh, it's my first love in terms of gaming). Aaron's a personal friend of mine so we helped introduce the team to the Japanese Bemani scene and arrange some interviews. We filmed in Odaiba, so I was able to show the team around the area afterwards, they seemed to really like the retro arcade there.

I did a few interview scenes, although mainly talking about the scene as a whole and how things aren't really so positive if you look at the big picture. Not sure whether or not it'll be in the final cut but I just tried to give another perspective on things.

For the most part the team seemed to have a lot of love for the project, although the translator didn't really know much gaming "lingo" when talking to people. Heh, it's the sort of stuff you really can't research beforehand.

Heh, I dunno man, Aaron's been here since the mid-90s, has a family and a house here, while still managing to play DDR almost every day. Shit's dedication.

Well, of the shooting game scene then. ;)

I actually did a study abroad in late '96, and started my long-term residence about a year later in Jan of '98. So, late 90's on. I just did a 2-year stint in Fake Japan: Hawaii. I think I actually make mention of how the family can kill the arcade habit.

Doh! Looks like they typo'd NTSC-J instead of GP. No wonder they need money for post production editing. :P

Haha -- they're aware of the mistake. Apparently Julian and I were on the same email thread and got mixed up. Shit happens, eh? I'm not too bothered.

I thought it was odd that the stream I was watching earlier stopped in the middle of an interview. :?
I missed a full min + credits. This trailer is much better than the original/official.

Bump...
After nearly 3 years in filming and production, we are proud to announce that 100 Yen: The Japanese Experience is officially being released today on DVD.

Furthermore, we are excited to publicly announce for the first time that 100 Yen is officially locked in and signed with digital entertainment curator, FilmBuff.

FilmBuff has worked on other popular documentaries such as Super Size Me, Senna and Exit Through The Gift Shop. We couldn't be more thrilled to work with them to bring 100 Yen to the world!
