I'm the same way.
Anyways, welcome to the forums! I'm fairly new myself. There should be an introduction forum of some sort...

Always preferred horis myself, but then they seemed to be in fashion when I was growing up (favorite games always were R Type and TF3 - still are in fact).

Not sure why but you rarely ever get background collision in verts, and I always liked the way in horis one level would be quite open, but then next thing you were navigating through tunnels, kind of varied the pace a bit more.

Never knew why horis went out of fashion, especially since with home gaming, they are perfect for widescreen tvs, none of this setting up monitors in tate or playing with only a 3rd of the screen. (I realise it's a different story with arcades, which perhaps answers my question as hardly anyone has made shmups with console gaming in mind since the 90s).

Let's not talk about Thunderforce VI

Both have their own style obviously but it's true that horis, although far more prevelent in the late 80's / early 90's, have diminished significantly in number during a renaissaunce of verts throughout the naughties spearheaded by the Bullet Hell genre. In my opinion, these games (and the Cave ones in particular), showcase more of an evolution of gameplay during this time compared to their horizontal siblings. Think about it, Gradius 5 and R-Type Final although fantastic games, stick to a more traditional template and thats fair enough cos thats what works. It makes them what they are. I'm afraid ThunderForce 6 didn't do the genre any favours, but there is the Deathsmiles Games now, a couple of Doujin horis on PSN, Soldner X2 (Euroshmup) etc. Just got my J360 after being burnt by the whole 'no shooters on disc' PS3 shambles so will be checking out all the latest Cave shit.

PS R-Type Final is a great Hori but a lot players hate on it for some reason....

I have no preference. Taste and play both: vertical and horizontal.

Vertical, by far.

It can incorporate all three axes a bit better than horizontal can, and horizontals have WALLS YOU CAN CRASH INTO FFFFFF

Honestly I'll play anything that has a great scoring system, but horizontal seems to work better on modern TVs/monitors unless you have one that you can use for TATE ...IF the game supports/accepts it. If I made a list I'm sure vertical would win by a landslide. Its seems horizontal shooters have to try very hard to impress me, but I can and will enjoy mediocre verts any day.

Vertical without a doubt. I haven't played a single Horizontal shmup that I enjoyed yet ( except Progear which is super awesome, can't think of anything else I enjoyed at the moment).

However I am getting Death Smiles delivered tomorrow so I better enjoy it.

For some reason, dodging "falling" bullets by moving left and right feels more natural to me than the hori type.

Tough question. It's hard to say if I prefer one or the other.

The first arcade game I played was P-47 and my dad always ended up buying me horizontal shooters on my home computers so I have a soft spot for them.

I think it depends on the mood I am in, If I feel like just playing for survival I'll stick a Horizontal game on, if I fancy chasing someones score I will go for a vert. Can't really explain why I play the 2 types differently. Could be to do with the scoring usually being a bit more involved on vert shooters.

I like having to squeeze through tunnels etc in Hori games too. . . even if it can lead to teeth grinding frustration :D
