We need to coral all the folk who want to be involved with this, and we need to have a plan. I figure if people here can scrape enough cash together to get a Ketsui board to guru, then maybe we can pull this one off as well. So, anyone officially in or...?
I'll throw in $100, guaranteed. I could probably double that if need be. What do you estimate the set-up and yearly fees on the site to be?

I need to research this a bit, or maybe someone could point me in the right direction on a more meaty hosting option. I'll look into it this weekend.

Estimated funds so far look to be US$700.

I'd play with the amazon EC2 pricing tools just to see if it's something you think is sustainable. The only problem is your costs are not fixed in that case (they vary based on your storage/bandwidth use) which could be both good and terribly terribly bad. Also while I think Amazon EC2/S3/etc are sexy tech it may be a bit too high end for a site like this.

You could look into a dreamhost VPS, but I don't know how the bandwidth is on those so you might run into the 'need multiple instances' problem.

Long ago I'd had a few dedicated servers here and there, but I haven't done that in a while. However, I remember a few of the places; like here: http://www.burst.net/servers.shtml

Or you could go with their VPS stuff: http://www.burst.net/linvps.shtml

obviously you might be able to find better deals, so it's worth looking around. The good thing with most of these is it tends to be month-to-month so you could try the VPS solution and if the place ends up having crap bandwidth just move on to another.

I should have probably posted this earlier:

Currently looking for folk who can help grab and hold onto as many videos in a semi-coordinated assault and then when a server's ready, get them back up probably via FTP. Free time, bandwidth, and harddrive space willing of course. Post or PM me what you've grabbed/grabbing if you can and I'll keep a running list. Hopefully I'll be able to sneak some downloads in during work without the IT guys hassling me...

I have all Dimahoo and Truxton II videos with me already. Tomorrow I'll download some more stuff.

I suppose we should write down the description of each video as well, right?

Why not just get shell access to the server and rsync the entire video directory somewhere else?

We should copy the players/superplay's comments as well (did not know if that's Aguraki was talking about) and paste them in a text doc to keep track of them, unless there is a easier way.

Yes this - crithit5000 has shell access to the server now.

He also has access to the mysql database so has all the comments etc. for the videos so there shouldnt be any need to record the description of the videos.

Try this instead. I spliced them together, and while I was at it I cropped out the ridiculous borders and resized it down to 240x320. Since the source used blend deinterlacing it's still not going to look all that good (hit pause when gain's options' sword shots are on screen - you'll see doubles), but there's nothing I can do about that.

Update in case you were wondering: In about a week or two I'll most likely have the new server ready-ish to at least host the videos. Basically just waiting til payday (Friday) to dump another 100 or so dollars to my funds. Going with what looks to be a pretty good dedicated solution.

More updates: Server is up and running, and I just configured Apache/PHP/MySQL. No domain to hit at the moment, but I will begin transferring videos soon-ish and at least have those somewhere accessible until I get the UI up and running. Keep watching :)

If you want super-play.co.uk you can have it, but it might be a good idea to get a .com address :)

Many thanks for your hard work, please let me know if you need anything else from me.

Bah, somebody's squatting all the good stuff like superplay.com, super-play.com, sp.com, s-p.com, etc.

In case anyone's wondering: hi. I haven't checked to see if every single video got copied over, but it's a durned massive list. Will be working on the actual site soon, but just letting folks know (especially the contributors who help make this all possible) that SuperPlay isn't dying anytime soon.
