What do you use or prefer for the controller on a PC?

Keyboard is best. Controllers are uncomfortable if you want to have more than one button handy. I made the tragic mistake of buying a wireless kb recently and it's terrible - doesn't register more than four inputs at a time. Blech.

I used a controller that looked like the original, pre-analog Playstation controller for a long time. It had a digital thumb stick instead of a pad or buttons, and I actually really liked it. Built-in turbo/auto as well, but only about 20 Hz so it wasn't optimal for stuff like Darius Gaiden. It was really cheap though, and it did break eventually.

I used a Saturn USB pad for a while but it broke VERY quickly. Felt great while it lasted.

Since most shmups only use 2-3 buttons, I'd actually love a PCE USB controller.

I'm a regular pad (Sega Saturn) and stick (FSTE) user, and I tried playing some RayForce and Crimzon Clover on my keyboard today.

So damn awkward @_@ Stuff that normally seems trivial suddenly feels like a challenge to my hand-eye coordination.

I use a keyboard, but only because I'm forced to. I'm actually very proficient with it (I'll beat anyone in Guilty Gear). However, one of these days I'll get myself a wireless Bluetooth adapter (so I can use my Classic controller) or a USB/Gamecube adapter. That would be heaven.

for arcade shmups and for that matter pretty much all arcade-released games I definitely want to use a decent Arcade Stick. For non-shmup games, like for instance an snes platformer, I would prefer to use my Sega Saturn usb controller. If its a windows game like minesweeper, or a solitaire, I gladly enjoy using a mouse. Never much enjoyed using the keyboard to play games, although for some games like rattler race or chips challenge it is clearly the best.

I use my Hori EX2 XBOX 360 arcade stick on my PC shmups. Works great without modification for MAME, and for other games a quick xpadder setting works great.

I have a SF4 SE all Seimitsud out that I like quite a bit, but I have to admit I usually don't use it on the PC. I put a LOT of hours on keyboard before I could even afford investing in nice sticks, so I'm very comfortable with the arrow keys. I might actually perform slightly better on keyboard, but I don't have trouble switching back and forth.

On PC I use a custom arcade style joystick - I build them BTW

*Note* - If you plan on going the arcade stick route, make sure that you get a PS3 compatible one. the 360 sticks map UDLR to the D-Pad, whereas the PS3 variants map UDLR to BOTH the d-pad AND the analog stick. This means that if you use a 360 stick on your PC you will not be able to play most doujins, as they are hardcoded to use the analog stick for directions. Stuff like Perfect Cherry Blossom, Eden's Aegis, rRootage will not play correctly with a 360 stick...from my experience.

I prefer keyboard. The most optimal input for pixel perfect movement. I would use keyboard for anything but sometimes you just don't get a choice.

Wireless bluetooth playstation 3 control pad no better pad on the market IMO fast responsive and comfortable just a bit of a pain to setup http://www.motionjoy.com if you want to download the drivers i really can not use anything else these days I cant stand joysticks and other pads feel to fat.
