I think it looks incredibly bland and derivative - the ship design is too wide..

For a minute there I thought the Angel Fish ship picture was the Gizmondo...wouldn't that be weird looking. A handheld shaped like a ship.
The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

Given some of the excellent shmups that have shown up on the PocketPC, I'd almost say that would be the platform you're looking for as far as being similar to the GP32. In fact it even meets the criteria you specify (open, no-cost development tools including .NET Compact Framework, Plenty of games and emulators, etc.) The only reason I say "almost" here is that in general, PocketPCs generally have lousy D-pads and button configurations that end up making it very difficult to use for gaming (although the touch screen does help for a lot of things.)

Agreed, the controls are usually terrible for games. Now, if someone were to put an analog stick like the PSP! Another idea would be a small SD stick with an analog stick on it... hmmm... small market though, but good idea.

To ressurrect an old thread, I've been rinsing Angelfish for all that it's worth over the past few weeks it's pretty good. All the sprites and backgrounds are hand drawn. The score system has directly jacked the Ikaruga chaining system and the Psyvariar bullet scrapping system. It works really well together, the bullet patterns themselves are manic but not compared to dodonpachi. Its pretty sweet I'd start a hi-score thread but theres no point me being the only person on the community playing it ;)

So it was you, that lone customer at the gizmondo shop?

Seriously though: Angelfish, is it a "one hit kill" game or has a life-bar (what is the gauge at the top-left corner on some of the screenshots)?
Apparently there is also S60 version available, is it the same (S60: lower resolution, vertical screen)?
