Though not an action/platform game... there apears to be a shmuppy part in the elusive Segagaga game! Check out these screens from the mobile phone version of the game...

And the best one (check out the boss!):

Now I feel sorry passing up the DC version of this game :(.

Is it the beer I just drank or is that the funniest thing I've read in a while?

Either mega man 7 or 8 has a hoizontal shmup part in the one level. You fly around in the clouds and you have to shoot stuff down.

Warioware: Touched! kind of has one. You control the earth and you have to dodge attacks from the other plantes. It's a vert, but it goes across both screens, so it's kind of annoying since there's a gap.

Xexyz is IIRC a Xain D'Sleena type game but with some RPG elements. You go through a level of platforming action then get on the Cyborg Rider for a shooting level. One of the bosses "Jawza" bears quite a resemblance to Darius' Guard Savage.
Kinect? KIN NOT.

Lotus II for the Genesis has a hidden Centipede clone. Oh yeah, doesn't one of the MK3 versions have a hidden Galaga clone?

Metal Slug 3 has a LONG shmup stage...3 or 4 I think.

Rules.

Action Fighter for SMS has a shooter stage where your cars sprouts wings and flies for some shooter action.

Oh yeah...The Guardian Legend...again by the god of the overhead shooter, COMPILE.

As far as I know there are two shmup levels in this game. I can only reach level 3-5 with 1cc, so there might be more.

In the first one (level 2-2) you control Batman underneath a "bat glider". It is viewed from above and scrolls horizontally. The buildings underneath you scroll in a very neat way and also the soundtrack is great. As you control q glider it is a bit hard to control at first. The level itself is unfortunately too long. At one point you are shooting down rockets for what seems an eternity. There is but little variation. The sub-boss is a big blimp three or four screens wide and the end-boss a big helicopter with a large variety of attacks.

In the second one (level 3-4) you view Batman from the side as he stands on some flying machine. Also a horizontal level (and very short btw) with nice graphics, but not much gameplay.

Also don't forget Treasure's Dynamite Headdy (Gen) which has a shmup level.

Jojo's Venture (Capcom) for PlaystationONE or Jojo's Bizarre Adventure for the Dreamcast. Can't remember which one.
Has a great shmup level. Reminds of Salamander.

The Jaguar version of Rayman has one hori shooter level where you're riding this giant mosquito. It's memorization-based and extremely easy. I wouldn't recommend hunting down the game to play it...maybe the ROM if you're really bored.

I'd assume the PC, PSX, Saturn, and GBA versions have it too. It's in world 1-4, I believe.

Most obscure one I've played: There's a shmup level where you control Samus's ship in the Galactic Pinball (I think) game for the Virtual Boy.

Best platformer vehicle levels next to Alex Kidd. :) The submarine and sky pop battles rule. Gunpei Yokoi produced Mario = greatness. Too short though and too many 1 ups make it too easy. :(

Really? Wow. And here I thought it was just another fighting game from Capcom. Is the shmup level found in the original 'Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure', or in 'Jo Jo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage For The Future'?

No you're wrong, it's perfectly balanced. At least, it was for its time, it had the right learning curve. I think the real problem is that the more skilled we get playing and playing, the more "hardcore" stuff we demand. But the masterworks must be planned to be appreciated right on from the Joe that picks up a game boy for his first time.

P.S. Gunpei Yokoi, sure, but let's not forget Hip "GOD" Tanaka.

The PS version has a REAL BIG adventure mode with lots of minigames and beat 'em up sections.
But the PS version is only Jojo's Venture.
The DC also has a adventure mode, but smaller and almost only beat 'em up sections.
Then again the DC version has Jojo's venture AND Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.

Get 'em both if they're not that expensive.
They are very unknown, but great nevertheless.
I mean they ARE after all Capcom fighting games. It is the least known series. I stumbled upon this series and was amazed I didn't notice it before.

Oh well I still don't know for sure which one has the shmup section, but I'm leaning toward the PS version.

It was the PS version.

One of the coolest shooting sections I've ever found was the intro mini-game of Suchie Pai Adventure: Doki Doki Nightmare. Done by the Game Tengoku Team, it plays homage to the Ninja Jajamaru-kun series and the style is really fantastic.

Lego Star Wars has its own 'Viewpoint'-style shooty section.

Both Suburban Commando (based on the Hulk Hogan movie) and Dalek Attack for the C64 started with a horizontal shooter level.

Damnit. :x I have the DC version.

Last night I beat both games and found no shmup level. But I did come across a pretty cool 'beat 'em up' type level where I was apparently fighting through water to get to this one dude.

The game overall is a damn good fighter with some weird stuff here and there. I think I'm gonna hunt for the PS version now, and I'd also like to see the anime as well.

Just remembered Wonderboy III: Monster Lair. The arcade version was a fucking unfair pos. But the MD got the difficulty just right. Every 2nd level was a shmup level. Lots of good bosses too. There were definately 10 or 12 of them. And the learning the patterns took time. Hard mode threw in lots of extra attacks too. They'd use baloons to try and stun you so you ran into them.
