The hitboxes in Dragon Blaze are pretty tiny, I've got an issue of Arcadia where it shows them. In Gunbird 2 the hitboxes are virtually your whole character (except for Valpiro because he's a fat bastard) but the characters are small so it don't matter

Also, in Dragon Blaze only bullets kill you, which encourages point-blanking. Hitting aything else works as a power-down. What else do you want, a flower dress?

Problem for me is the difficulty gets really insane quite suddenly, there's almost no transition, and they're basically memorizers (it's impossible to get past most of the later bosses bullet spreads by just reacting quickly), which doesn't necessarily mix that well with bullet hell. Also, the hitboxes are very difficult to guess.
Im not an expert in either, but Dragon Blaze seems more refined than Dangun Feveron to me, and I'm crazy about Dangun Feveron. Neither feels like a bullet hell if you ask me. Don't see much similarity between Cave and Psikyo games bar those two.
Well yeah, I should have said "later Cave games" or "certain Cave games" or something along those lines, but I have to be careful in general not to start rambling... I'm not a fan of Dangun Feveron, either. Fucking piece of shit game...
Regarding the "every shooter is a memorizer" statements that are usually posted at this point of the discussion: memorization is always a game element, but some games allow you to get very far just by reacting. Somebody else said it far more eloquently than I could, so...
Concerning the hit boxes, probably a personal thing. I just always know exactly where my hitbox is in DOJ, but when I play Gunbird 2, I yell "for fuck's sake, that bullet didn't really touch me!" every minute or so...

Probably. I don't get the hate for Dangun. It's an amazingly fun game. I can only get to the 4th stage boss on one credit, but I love how manic that game is with its non-stop discodude chaining.

"What coulda been" is such lame talk. Dragon Blaze is a masterpiece. Get some scores up.

This thread has really made me think I should give Psikyo more of my time. Because of their ease of availability/discoverability in the PAL regions (or the UK at least), the Strikers series is one of my favourites, and certainly one integeral to me finding my way into being into shmups.

Despite that, I've dedicated very little time to other Psikyo releases, event though I have all the PS2 releases except Sol Divide, and many PS1/saturn versions.

What do people think of Homura? I never hear that mentioned much...

a little off-topic then...

IMO Homura is great. I was playing it a lot a week ago but I had to stop.
It's sort of a Shikigami No Shiro (no ground targets. besides some boss phases) with only one character and different albeit more addictive chaining system. It makes you get greedy pretty fast. :)

Ywp - I'm an idiot - Homaru is Skonec isn't it! I did a 18 hour working day with Jetlag yesterday and then got five hours sleep last night - is that a good enough excuse!?

Why does that game feel like a Psykio game in my head?

Whoa! Just to clarify things: Dangun Feveron is one of my favourite shmups (easily in top ten), head and shoulders above the rest of Cave games in my book. Dragon Blaze is fab too (once you get the hang of the dragon thing), even if a bit too much for me now (but I'm going to give it more lovin' at some point). The floaty hitbox in the latter isn't all that different from Rayforce's by the way.
I was merely making a point about refinement. Dragon Blaze feels more refined than Dangun Feveron, and the rest of Cave library is too unlike Psikyo to make direct comparisons if you ask me. That's my non-expert opinion.
Psikyo games just deliver what I want from a shmup, even if I play only for survival. Cave games played for survival hardly feel like shmups to me.

Fixed.
All shmups whose stage design isn't randomized to a large extent are basically memorizers. Some hide it better than others, though.

Back on topic: Psikyo are awesome and don't get enough love. Strikers II, Gunbird 2, and Dragon Blaze are masterpieces.

Seriously man, you manage to make me  pretty damn hard with almost every post of yours. Just get it over with and post a pic of your gigantic dick or your shmup collection, I don't think it makes much of a difference around these parts...

The one Psikyo arcade shmup title that everyone seems to either like or dislike is none other than Sol Divide. It is notable for having cool digitzed fire effects used in-game. Maybe if Psikyo fine tuned it more in the gameplay department, it would've done better or if it was a tate game instead of an yoko based one. I like the fanasty/RGP-ish elements used to progress the story along.

I've not played it much, but I wish SD had gone with smaller, more maneuverable sprites ala Sengoku Blade. I like the ebb and flow of up-close slashing -> evading and shooting, versus beat 'em up-type gangs. And some of the command strikes are very satisfying to connect with. It feels so chunky and imprecise whenever things get really hectic, though.

Some neat character / monster designs, at least. I love the Raoh-esque bad guy, and I get this nostalgic Ray Harryhausen vibe from a lot of the bosses and settings.

Knowing that there are people out there who enjoy that piece of shit of a game called Sol Divide makes me feel... I don't know....

Maybe Sol Divide is the reason why Psikyo sank after all.
It was a self cast curse that eventually demanded its toll by taking the company out of business.

Sol Divide is pretty useless.

But I do agree that there's interesting ideas there. They just fucked up. It happens.

Strikers 1945 II is one of the best games they've ever made. I had a lot of fun with it.

I hated Psikyo after playing a few of their PS1 ports, but that all changed when I found a Strikers 1945 III cabinet at a hotel while traveling.

I thought, "Eh, what rotten luck. The first non-Galaga STG I encounter since Raiden would have to be a stupid Psikyo game. Might as well put in a few quarters since it's here..."

I ended up really liking it. I now intend for a Psikyo game to be one of my first two PCB purchases when I get into that. It's a shame they went under.

I always thought that the Strikers 1945 II port was awesome for the PS1

I melted away hours of my life playing that before going to bed for work.

It's a pretty rewarding game and difficulty ramps up towards the end.

I actually prefer it to Strikers III
