What you want in a shmup ship
Re: What you want in a shmup ship
Am I the only one who would want my shmup ship to look like a stealthy, sleek jet-fighter? Painted black, of course. Can't be seen at night.
Actually, there are some other cool ideas, like an organic bug thing, that I had in mind...ah, well, I guess it depends on the theme of the game.
In other news, a shmup based on Ace Combat Advance gameplay (As in sort of realistic, free-flight, mission-based, etc.) but still being over-the-top with crazy-ass superweapons and shit would be awesome. Does anyone understand what I'm talking about?

Re: What you want in a shmup ship
I'm gonna start off with artistic points since I've always wanted to say these but never had the chance.
I absolutely love ships that kind of abstractly look like or represent non-ship things like animals. By far my favorite ship design of all time is in Psyvariar Medium Unit, even more once leveled up (it was changed some in Revision and 2 has a mech instead). Look at the 2nd to last boss of SWY's video at super-play for the best example of what I'm going to say. The buzzing of bullets, the inability to keep buzzing the same bullet, the erratic movement this entails... I can't imagine I'm the first person to notice this, but it looks exactly like some mechanical moth performing a deadly but beautiful dance in front of a sinister light source. Seriously, watch it, maybe get high beforehand, it will blow your fucking mind. The "artgamers" who reference Ikaruga all the time need to check this shit instead! Much more awesome. I can't imagine this was by accident, so whoever thought this up is a fucking genius and a half.
Huge points too, although less, to the design of Metal Black's Black Fly, which really does look like a fly. One that gets the staredown from a cat. Darius games get props for the bosses, but everyone already knows about those.
Not a shmup, but I fucking love the enemies in the Lost Area of Rez that act like whales. Never heard anyone make the whale connection before, but I assume many people do.
There needs to be more abstract shit like this and less obvious stuff like spidercat and demon babies, even though that kind of junk is cool too.
Mechanics-wise: To an extent, the more gimmicky the better. I like ships that other people tend to hate to control. Shmup players here don't really complain about ships, but Touhou people complain about Aya ("the Judge Spear of Touhou") and Youmu (who has an option that shoots in the reverse direction of movement like the Garegga one). I like weird stuff like buzzing for invincibility in Psyvariar or the speed boost in Dogyuun or moving via recoil in Granada or dragon shot in Dragon Blaze or aimed directional shot like Tinker in Twinkle Star Sprites or Stuck in Giga Wing. I'm also a sucker for lock-on lasers and laser battles.
Out of more traditional ships, I prefer faster ships. I hate homing shots generally since I like to move, and the opposite of that is straight fire, so I like that. I absolutely hate traditional screen-clearing Cave-style bombs, especially the "use it or lose it" style. Autobomb or Touhou-style reaction bomb is even worse. I don't mind delayed bombs or low-area bombs or even no bombs at all. I don't have a reason other than I think it's neat, but I like weapons you have to pointblank with to be good, like Wide in Varth or Peplos in Blazing Star. Seibu-style napalm is awesome too.

Einhänder looks and moves like a flying insect. The game's got pretty cool animations.
The rear gate is closed down
The way out is cut off

Re: What you want in a shmup ship
I was originally saying I was a laser person, but lately I've liked napalm as well. It's good for getting some bonuses with its wide area-of-effect (Destroyed at a time!), and it also tends to look pretty, and I'm a sucker for things that look pretty.
I should also prolly mention I don't like piercing weapons unless they're a side-shot of some sort. For some reason they always seem to do less damage.
I also pretty much never use bombs, so hand me a MAXIMUM mode.

Re: What you want in a shmup ship
Since I got my Turbo Force PCB, all I want is flying cars! Ships with wheels for the win.
Who wouldn't want to drive/fly this?

Edit: Substituted 'would' for 'wouldn't' !

... you want to go hit up the game and submit a score here? You'll even get to see the flyer again!ZOM wrote:Dear god not that flyer again - everytime I read that line about the final boss...
I know that 'art' crops up every now and then and then some more, but I'm currently in love with the game and gagging to get other people playing it!

^^Tempting. Give me a few days, and I'm sure I'll post something in that splendid turbo-licius thread of yours.

Re: What you want in a shmup ship
though it's not considered a shmup, I am a BIG Panzer Dragoon nut, so give me a ship/person/dragon or creature with fancy homing weapons and I'll go apeshit on whatever flies within range
Shmups, such as Kamui, the Ray series, Thunder Force's "hunter", and Ether Vapor come to mind.
Something that moves moves wicked fast.
As far as design goes, RayCrisis Wave Riders, Mecha, and abstract forms are prefered.

Use Shumpman's advice!
"USE A BOMB!"
"USE A BOMB!"
Re: What you want in a shmup ship
Well, while we're on the subject of ships, what control schemes do you like? I mean, Mars Matrix had four commands mapped to a single button! That was pretty cool, although my favorite's probably Battle Bakraid (Shot memory, auto-charging, variable-distance bombs) or DoDonPachi (Secondary fire/movement, offensive/defensive bombs). Blazing Star's interesting for having a separate rapid fire shot, though it kind of makes things more stressful, not less.

An ejection seat
Re: What you want in a shmup ship
I generally agree with this opinion in my own ship choices. I really did enjoy Stuck in Giga Wing or Griffin in Raiden Fighters. Typically I enjoy something slower (maybe a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10) so I have to be more thoughtful about my movements. Fast ships leave me feeling too empowered.Mechanics-wise: To an extent, the more gimmicky the better. I like ships that other people tend to hate to control. I'm beginning to think I'm the only person who likes slower ships.

Re: What you want in a shmup ship
medium sized ship and shot. it'd also be nice to have customizable satellite ships around yours, like 2.
Oh, and it'd have to be super cute. like a nice and happy flying cupcake with smiley faces as the satellites. Either that or camels that spin around forever.
